Smith & Wesson Model 68 w/ 6" barrel. Manufactured for California Highway Patrol and LAPD exclusively (1977-1988). The Model 68 is the Model 66, but manufactured with the shorter 38 Special cylinder. The agencies issued the hot 38 Spl +P+ (Treasury Load) which beat up the 38 Special revolvers; Smith & Wesson Model 15 and Smith & Wesson Model 67. The Model 68 is a magnum rated revolver with a 38 Special cylinder. It could handle the hot 38 Special +P+ load with ease. Approximately 6,000 were manufactured and are very popular with collectors.

Date of discontinuance

I know it states "present" but I am sure Smith & Wesson unfortunately discontinued all the K frame .357 magnums.

Re-released

As of this year the Model 66 has been re-released with a 4.25" barrel. Pretty awesome. Also have a new (sorta) L-frame .44 Magnum out as well. StanTheMan (talk) 16:16, 28 January 2014 (EST)
