If this is an actual 'Mini-Series', shouldn't it be in the TV category? StanTheMan 02:37, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Explosive

Glad this aired on Canadian television. This would piss off American gunowners and would have created a real firestorm of controversy. I'm willing to bet it pissed off Canadian gunowners as well. The mini-series appears to follow the formula established by the German/British mini-series Traffik later remade as Traffic by Hollywood. Regardless of my political opinion the page needed links established to it. --Jcordell 15:11, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

"Guns" wasn't actually that controversial in Canada because it referenced incidents that did happen in Toronto, and it dealt with facts that were known to most Canadians (such as how most illegal weapons are either smuggled from the US or stolen from a licensed gun owner's home). Still, the way the U.S is portrayed would probably annoy American gunowners. --Markit 16:37, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
My last years (1996-2000) in the U.S. Army I was stationed at Ft. Drum, New York. Part of our cable television package included two Canadian television channels and since we were on our border I encountered many Canadians (to include training with the Canadian Army) and the Watertown newspaper ran many stories regarding Canada. I came to realize that Canadian gunowners shared many of the same beliefs with their American counterparts, but they also differed with us. This isn't a slam. Just an observation.
I remember talking to a British Army officer who was stationed at Fort Drum as a liason officer. He told me that he liked Canada. Told me that it had the best parts of England combined with the best parts of the United States. I didn't have time to ask him to elaborate. Plus I was an enlisted man and he was a major so I really couldn't have gotten into it with him even if I did have the time. Anyway you did good work on this page. I also established some links to The Border. Mainly with Athena Karkanis. Figured since I started her page I should add to it. --Jcordell 16:51, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

I would agree that this movie/miniseries would have caused a firestorm of controversy had it been given a theatrical release in the USA or if it aired on USA television on a high-viewership channel. To wit, this motion picture portrays the following:

  • America is blamed as one of the major sources of the smuggled guns that are used by Canadian criminals.
  • Gun shows and gun collectors are treated as a major source of guns used in crimes. Gun shows are a source because they are frequented by fleets of straw buyers who for a small fee end up supplying the smugglers with the guns. Gun collectors are shown to be a source as well because in this film one gets raided for his merchandise, to be used in crime.
  • Not only are there EEEVVVILLL guys in Canada hard at work converting semi-automatic weapons to fully-automatic and destroying crime guns being traced by melting them down, they also try to convince corrupt American quartermasters at military bases into selling them their heavy weaponry to transfer to tinpot dictators in Africa.

Still, such a wave of controversy would have been a fine opportunity for Americans and Canadians to come together to address the flow of illicit firearms into Canada and other border security issues. It's still a problem from what I can tell but has gotten next to no recent press. --Mazryonh 05:45, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
