Homicide: Life on the Street is an American police TV drama that originally aired on NBC. The show was loosely based on David Simon's 1991 non-fiction book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. It follows the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit.
Upon the show's conclusion Richard Belzer's character John Munch would appear as a regular cast member in multiple Law & Order shows, as well making minor appearances where the character is identified by name in Fox's Arrested Development and The X-Files, as well as HBO's The Wire. As the episode Mercy featured a crossover with the NBC hospital drama St. Elsewhere, these crossovers have resulted in significant amounts of television being trapped in that show's infamous twist ending.

The standard issue to the Baltimore Police Department is the Glock 17 and the Glock 19, which at the time was standard issue in real life. Detectives appear to switch between Glock 17s and Glock 19s throughout the series. Glocks are carried by Detective John Munch (Richard Belzer), Detective Beau Felton (Daniel Baldwin), Detective Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson), Detective Mike Kellerman (Reed Diamond), Detective Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor), Detective Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher), Detective Stu Gharty (Peter Gerety), Detective Laura Ballard (Callie Thorne), Detective Paul Falsone (Jon Seda), and Captain Megan Russert (Isabella Hofmann), as well as most of the lesser officers and detectives. BPD officers nowadays use Glock 22s in real life. Lieutenant Al Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) briefly uses one in the episode "Fallen Heroes". In the episode "Fallen Heroes", Junior Bunk (Mekhi Phifer) takes a detective's Glock from his desk and uses it to kill three police officers in the Homicide Squad room. He then continues firing at other officers and detectives before being shot and killed. Of an interesting note, while most detectives fire their weapon using a two-handed grip, Detective Frank Pembleton often fires his Glock one-handed. Detectives Munch, Felton, and Falsone carry their Glocks in shoulder holsters, while all other detectives carry them in paddle holsters.
Sergeant Kay Howard (Melissa Leo) both use nickel and blued 3rd generation Colt Detective Specials. Det. Stanley Bolander (Ned Beatty) carries a blued 3rd generation DS. Various other minor detectives are also seen using nickel DSs.
Smith & Wesson Model 15s are carried by BPD officers in Season 1. Officer Chris Thormann (Lee Tergesen) is seen carrying one in flashbacks in the episode "Double Blind".
An Astra Terminator appears in the episode "Secrets", and is misidentified as a ".44 Caliber Smith & Wesson". The cylinder release latch and the grips, however, ID it as an Astra and not a Smith & Wesson.
A Beretta 92FS Inox is identified as the murder weapon in the episode "Saigon Rose". Gordon Pratt (Steve Buscemi) uses two Beretta Inox's to shoot Detectives Felton (Daniel Baldwin), Bolander (Ned Beatty), and Howard (Melissa Leo) in the episode "The City that Bleeds". Another Beretta 92FS Inox is seen used by Luther Mahoney (Erik Dellums) in the episode "Deception".
Harry Prentice (Wilford Brimley) uses an AMT Hardballer in "See No Evil" (S02E02). Another AMT Hardballer (possibly the same prop) is owned by "Kid Funkadelic" (Antonio D. Charity) and is the murder weapon in "Bop Gun" (S02E01).
Ronnie Sayers (Sean Nelson) carries a Bruni/BBM "ME-8 Police" blank firing gun in "Every Mother's Son." (S03E09) Dialogue reveals that it is supposed to be chambered in .32 ACP.
Pembleton and Lewis are running down a list of registered owners of .40 Smith & Wessons, and come across an owner who confesses to using her Smith & Wesson 4004 in an unrelated murder.
A Smith & Wesson 4006 is revealed as a murder weapon in "Law and Disorder." (S03E15) In the case, Pembleton and Lewis search for registered owners of a ".40 Smith & Wesson."
The murder weapon in "Autofocus" (S04E03) is a Colt M1911 chambered in 9mm. During the course of the investigation, Det. Lewis states that it's either a Colt or "a 9mm AMT."
Augie Distel (Donald Neal) hands Jake Rodzinsky (Bruce Campbell) his SIG-Sauer P228 in "Justice: Part 2" (S04E14). Jake eventually goes with a nickel plated M1911-type. (See above.)
A Double Barreled Shotgun appears in the episode "Shaggy Dog, City Goat". Det. Lewis takes one away when it's shoved in his face in "All Through the House." (S03E08)
BPD QRT officers are seen using Heckler & Koch MP5A3s in most episodes, most notably in "The City That Bleeds". In later seasons, they have Navy Trigger Groups and Forelights.
The Daisy Airsoft Model 15's stand in for Heckler & Koch MP5K as the standard weapon for the BPD QRT Unit in the episode "In Search of Crimes Past." (S03E18)
In the episode "Hostage Part 1 & Part 2", genuine Heckler & Koch MP5Ks appear in the hands of QRT Officers.

Rifles/Assault Rifles
Remington 700
In the episode "Hostage", QRT Snipers are seen carrying Remington 700 rifles.
William Mariner (Andrew Parks) uses a Heckler & Koch HK91 mocked up as an H&K SR9 during his killing spree in "Sniper (Part 1)" (S04E08). During the investigation, Homicide detectives determined that they were looking for an "HK" in ".308." Given that Mariner was an insurance executive who was a former military sharpshooter, it would make sense for him to have such an expensive rifle.
Alex Robey (David Eigenberg) uses a scoped M1 Carbine during his copycat shooting spree in "Sniper (Part 2)" (S04E09). Detectives incorrectly state that the rifle is chamber in ".308" like the faux SR9 of the first sniper. A ballistics expert later identifies it as a "M1A Carbine," which is even more confusing.
The viewers first glimpse of Gordon Pratt is a picture of him holding an unidentified AR-15 variant. It has triangular A1 hand guards, and a 20-round magazine.
Victor (Bruno Kirby) and Danny (Richard Edson) go into a gun shop intent on buying a gun, but don't follow through because Victor refuses to pay taxes in "Gas Man." (S03E20)
