He appeared as well in the television series ''[[Last Resort]]'' and ''[[Law & Order: Special Victims Unit]]'', and most recently as NYPD Captain Ray Holt in the NBC/FOX comedy ''[[Brooklyn Nine-Nine]]'', for which he was nominated four times for the  Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He passed away from lung cancer in December of 2023 at the age of 61,
