Note

Roger Vanderberghe

The character depicted by Abraham Belaga, Robert Tual, is heavly inspirated by the Chief Warrant Officer Roger Vanderberghe. A resistant fighter at age of 16 and who joined regular army with his brother after WW2 for duty in Indochina. In 1948 his brother, his last family, is KIA. He becomes Sergeant and lead a recon platoon composed only by anticommunist local soldiers. The efficients of all actions behind ennemy lines are due that Vanderberghe use non conventional warfare tactics and copy the same strategy and use similar uniform than the Việt Minh. Later finally promuted Chief Warrant Officer, his commando, the number 24, whose the members are nicknamed The Black Tigers is one of the best unit of the war, even the Việt Minh command put a reward over Vanderberghe (a reward that Vanderberghe stole after pretending being captured, but the soldiers who claimed the reward were in fact his own). All the members of the commando are Vietnamese soldiers and ex Việt Minh soldiers, only the officers and NCOs are French. But in January 1952, he is assassinated while sleeping at age of 24, betrayed by an ex Việt Minh figther, who was infiltrated. He was the most decorated NCOs of 20th century with 5 medals and 18 citations, he was also wounded 8 times. General De Lattre de Tassigny said of him. Let France give me 100 Vanderberghe, and we will defeat the Việt Minh...
