Actor pages

For images on actor pages, it's more important to get a clear images of the actor's face, unlike on a media page, where it's most important to get a clear image of the weapon. So if you have the movie on hand, get a good image of the actor's face, and he or she is holding a weapon at the same time, all the better.

The Matrix SP89/MP5K

If you don't mind, I rolled back your edits. Here's my rationale: The "SP89 (mocked up as MP5K)" entry, and the picture of the gun that we use, is more appropriate when the weapon is a partial conversion (i.e., full-auto sear and MP5K vert grip installed, but all-metal lower receiver remains intact) - such as the guns from Speed and Die Hard with a Vengeance. The MP5K seen in The Matrix may have started out as an SP89, as you documented on the page, but it is not a partial conversion - it's the full conversion with SEF trigger park, paddle mag release, etc. When an H&K gun started out as an HK94 or SP89 but is a full-conversion, we still refer to it by the model to which it has been converted (e.g., an MP5K, in this case). Any of the movie armorers on this site will tell you that the vast majority of the H&K MP5s that you see in Western productions - especially American productions - are transferrable HK94 and SP89 conversions. We'd have to use your approach for almost all of those guns if we do it for this page, and that's a rabbit hole that I'd rather we didn't go down. What I did do: I kept your comment on one of the screencaps noting that SP89 nomenclature on top of the receiver. Let me know your thoughts. -MT2008 (talk) 19:46, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

No worries; it's a valid topic of discussion, which is why we're putting our heads together. If you want my thought process: So far as H&Ks are concerned, when an HK94 and SP89 is fully-converted to MP5/MP5K specs, so that the only difference between the conversion weapon and a factory H&K weapon is the receiver markings, I don't think that the "HK94 (mocked up as MP5)" or "SP89 (mocked up as MP5K)" nomenclature is appropriate. We've historically only used that nomenclature for the partial conversion weapons that are recognizable as what they had been (due to all-metal trigger packs, lack of barrel lugs, no paddle mag release, etc.) If we were to take the same approach that you tried on The Matrix, then pretty much every MP5K entry on IMFDB would have to be done the same way, since probably 95% of the MP5Ks that you have ever seen in movies started out as SP89s. I just don't see that as practical.

You do raise a good point RE the Furious 7 MP5K - that's a weird one. My recommendation would be to classify it as "MP5K-PDW (mock-up)" and note the differences from a factory gun. And no, when civilian versions of firearms are converted to select-fire variants, I wouldn't say that they (quote) "turn into their actual select-fire variants," but I would say that we have to treat them as their full-auto breathren for the purposes of not overwhelming our readers with too much information. Doesn't mean that we can't note (in description/screencap captions/etc.) visual features which reveal their lineage, such as receiver markings, but we do have to mindful that there's a balance to be sought between detail and accessibility. -MT2008 (talk) 12:39, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm actually not sure how much of a choice it is by the armorers, vs. which Class III manufacturer provided the weapons. I don't believe that any of the armories did the conversion work on the H&K guns themselves. I know that Ellis Props & Graphics (now defunct) bought most of its MP5s from LaFrance Specialties, and a lot of those guns are simple HK94 and SP89 conversions (and those are the ones you see in a lot of 1980s and 1990s movies and TV shows). A lot of the other conversions in movie armories probably came from FJ Vollmer or some of the other Class III SOTs that specialized in H&K conversions (and actually did take the time to replace the trigger packs, barrels, mag releases, etc.) -MT2008 (talk) 16:27, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
