The Wife of the Returnee is a 2006 German television movie directed by Gaby Kubach based on memories of the author Felix Huby. Germany 1944: In the East, the war is entering its final phase, when soldier Karlheinz Rombach is given one last furlough and spends a few carefree hours with his wife Eva. While Eva's father Julius still believes in victory, Karlheinz looks forward to returning to the Eastern Front with trepidation and asks his friend Sebastian, who is exempt from military service due to a war injury, to look after his wife Eva and their son. When Karlheinz has still not returned four years after the end of the war, Eva gives up hope and gives in to Sebastian's cautious wooing. In the meantime, Karlheinz is released from Soviet captivity.
