Ruger Police Carbine

The Ruger Police Carbine is an American semi-automatic carbine, an early example of a dedicated pistol-caliber carbine. It was released by Ruger in 1996 as a companion to the Ruger P-series pistols. The Police Carbine uses many of the same factory magazines utilized by P-series pistols and was available in 9x19mm Parabellum and .40 S&W. A .45 ACP version was tested, but never mass produced. It heavily resembles, and is in essence, a heavier-duty Ruger 10/22. Ruger conceived the Police Carbine as a service rifle for police officers on patrol (hence the name), with the idea being an officer can carry a Ruger pistol as a sidearm and use the Police Carbine if a situation called for a longer-ranged and more stable weapon. The main advantage of such a system would be the need to only carry one kind of magazine on their person. The Police Carbine was commercially unsuccessful and discontinued in 2006. While well-built and robust, the Police Carbine was unable to compete with lower cost pistol-caliber carbines like the Hi-Point Carbine or Kel-Tec SUB-2000.

A simple blowback-operated rifle, the Police Carbine is noted for its unusually large bolt meant to handle the pressures of firing 9x19mm or .40 S&W via blowback. The bolt is actually two separate pieces- the main piece is lightweight and located in the receiver, while a weight sits in the foreend. Both pieces are joined by steel rods, allowing the weight of the massive bolt to be evenly distributed.
