Along with her pregnant mother, young Ofelia moves into the house of her stepfather, Captain Vidal (Sergi López ), commander of the local Guardia division. Ofelia meets a mysterious Faun in the eponymous Labyrinth, who gives her three tasks so she can prove herself to be a long-lost princess reincarnated as a mortal. Meanwhile, the coldly authoritarian Vidal rages a war with Spanish Maquis fighters in the surrounding woods, the last remnants of the defeated Republicans.
