The Model 15 Diskushandgranate is a German hand grenade introduced in 1915 in response to the conditions of World War I trench warfare. The Model 15 is designed to detonate upon impact with a surface, rather than through a traditional time-delayed fuse found on most grenades. It was designed to prevent intended targets from simply picking up a primed grenade and throwing it back before it detonated. Entente forces nicknamed it the "Turtle Grenade" because of its unique shape.

In practice, the operator would first remove the safety pin and then throw the grenade sideways to put a spin on it. The motion would cause inertia to push percussion pins into place. Upon contact with a hard surface, these pins would push the internal primer and detonate the grenade.
