Players issue orders to and/or take direct control of soldiers on a simulation-driven battlefield.
It is the sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2 (Behind Enemy Lines in Russian) and is technically a standalone expansion to "Faces of War" (Behind Enemy Lines 2 in Russian') re-using alot of the visual assets, however both mission design and weapon balancing has been massively overhauled compared to "Faces of War".
The game takes place during World War II (with the exception of the Vietnam expansion pack) and features battles set in Europe, the Soviet Union, Crete, and North Africa across three different campaigns for the Americans, Germans and Soviets. The Empire of Japan was later introduced as a multiplayer faction in a patch.
On November 1, 2009, a sequel called Men of War: Red Tide (Russian: "Черные бушлаты") was released, featuring missions centered on the Soviet Naval Infantry of the Black Sea Fleet, in addition to adding the arsenals of two more countries, Italy and Romania. This game notably featured no multiplayer or editor.
On February 25, 2011, a stand-alone expansion pack called Men of War: Assault Squad was released, featuring more small arms and high quality weapon models. The expansion pack focused on the multiplayer and infantry combat aspects of the game more.
On September 9, 2011， another stand-alone expansion called Men of War: Vietnam was released, featuring 2 campaigns focused on the Vietnam War (of the Vietcong and their Russian Advisors, and American Forces respectively) and featuring Vietnam War-era weapons though a healthy amount of the old World- War 2-Era weaponry returns.
On April 12, 2012, a sequel called Men of War: Condemned Heroes was released, featuring several campaigns focusing on the infamous Soviet "Penal battalions" and high quality human models.
On September 12, 2019, a standalone expansion for Assault Squad 2 (A 2014 remaster of the original Assault Squad with improved graphics, Steam Workshop support and using Steam servers instead of Gamespy.) called Men of War: Assault Squad 2 - Cold War bringing in elements of the Call to Arms version of the engine was released to heavily negative reception, due to an assortment of bugs, lack of overall content and complete lack of a proper single player campaign. (The single player just being bot matches and the game having a grand total of 5 maps used in both modes.)
While there is often overlap in firearm models, it is not uncommon for each individual game/expansion to introduce new models/sounds/textures for specific/all firearms.
Notably, the game fully depicts and has all machine guns in vehicles be usable, rear-mounted machine guns on Tank Turrets are usable by the AI/Player in addition to Hull/Coaxial/AA mountings depending on the tank.
It is not to be confused with the Perry Lang's action film Men of War .
