Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989)

Last Exit to Brooklyn is an independent film directed by German director Uli Edel, based on the controversial novel by Hubert Selby, Jr. The original novel Last Exit to Brooklyn (published in 1964) was actually a conglomeration of various short stories (written from 1961-1964) which were loosely woven together and combined into the book. It was very controversial at the time, depicting a series of characters in 1950s Brooklyn: A union organizer has to cope with his homosexuality, a prostitute begins to fall in love with her customer, a young girl endures an illegitimate pregnancy. The depictions of gays, brutality, gang rape and other dark and seedy elements of 'city life' got the book banned in Italy and the subject of several obscenity trials in both the U.K. and America. (This is the writer whose book was the source for another very depressing movie Requiem for a Dream). The film stars Stephen Lang as Harry Black and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Tralala. Though there were 2nd unit filming in Brooklyn, New York, the majority of the film was shot on soundstages in Bavaria, Germany. This was director Uli Edel's last project in his native Germany, he later moved on to do movie and television shows in the United States.
