Ketchum Grenade

The Ketchum Grenade is an American hand grenade designed by William F. Ketchum in 1861 for use by the Union Army during the American Civil War. It consists of a metal shell containing a percussion cap that ignites a black powder charge. In order to detonate, the grenade must fall on a convex plunger fixed to the nose of the device. Cardboard stabilizing fins are attached to the rear of the Ketchum to stabilize it in flight and ensure it lands on the plunger. The grenade was manufactured in one, three, and five pound variants.

Used infrequently by the Union Army, the Ketchum Grenade proved to be largely ineffective due to the very specific angle it must land in order to detonate. Its range was also limited since the user had to throw them in a mostly vertical arc to ensure landing on the plunger. In many cases, Confederate troops would simply pick up undetonated grenades and throw them back at their attackers.
