Harper is a 1966 film directed by Jack Smight (Midway), written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, The Ghost and the Darkness) and starred Paul Newman as Lew Harper, a private investigator, based on the "Lew Archer" literary private detective character created by writer Ross MacDonald. Harper is thrown into a case of kidnapping that escalates to murder as he works with high society and low lifes in Los Angeles. The poster depicts an M1911 derivative as "Harper's gun", when, in actuality, he carries a Colt Detective Special throughout and no semi-automatic pistols are even seen onscreen. Paul Newman would reprise the role of Lew Harper in The Drowning Pool (1975).

The following weapons were used in the film Harper:

Colt Detective Special

Lew Harper (Paul Newman) carries a blued first generation Colt Detective Special in a dark brown leather shoulder holster. The club bouncer "Puddler" (Roy Jenson) takes Harper's Detective Special, but Allan Taggart (Robert Wagner) picks it up and gives it back to Harper. Dwight Troy (Robert Webber) also carries a Detective Special.
