Boberg XR9-L - 9x19mm

The Boberg XR9 is a semi-automatic compact pistol designed by Arne Boberg and manufactured by the Boberg Arms Corporation, notable for its unique "bullpup" layout. Whereas most pistols extract rounds from the magazine by pushing them forwards with the bolt face in the slide, the Boberg pulls rounds rearwards out of the magazine with an articulated claw before pushing them forwards into the chamber. This means that a longer barrel can be used than would normally be possible for a pistol of this size. Along with the more predictable issues associated with increased complexity, this mechanism introduced an issue unique to the Boberg where certain brands of ammunition would have the bullet stay gripped in the magazine whilst the pistol ripped the case rearwards off of it leading to an unusual jam and a pistol full of loose powder. Boberg manufactured the XR9 in two sizes, the standard short XR9-S model where the slide ended just ahead of the trigger guard, and the long XR9-L model with a short accessory rail on the front of the frame. Boberg also manufactured a variant chambered in .45 ACP called the XR45-S.

In 2015 the Boberg Arms Corporation was acquired by Bond Arms, and in 2016 they released an updated version of the XR9-S known as the Bond Arms BullPup9. The BullPup9 is largely identical to the earlier XR9-S, with the biggest difference being that the magazine now features a follower (another unusual feature of the original Boberg was that the bare magazine spring fed rounds up in the magazine).
