2nd Pattern Besal with 100-round Motley pan magazine - .303 British

The Besal is the common name for the "Gun, Light, Machine, Faulkner, .303-inch", an experimental light machine gun meant to replace or supplement the Bren in British service, developed primarily due to the potential risk that the latter would become unavailable if RSAF Enfield (where it was produced) were destroyed by German bombers; accordingly, it was made to be simpler and cheaper to mass-produce, allowing its production to be spread across various small shops - effectively, it was to the Bren what the Sten was to the Lanchester. Unlike the Sten, however, the Besal was ultimately deemed unnecessary (with the cessation of the German bombing campaign in Britain), and never put into large-scale production.
