Loosely based on the life of Louisiana governor Huey Long, the film follows the career of Willie Stark (Sean Penn) and his rise from small town lawyer to an ambitious and ruthless politician who then uses whatever means necessary to gain political power. The remake was directed by Steven Zaillian and the cast included Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law, Jackie Earle Haley, and Kate Winslet. The novel had previously been adapted into a 1949 feature film that was directed by Robert Rossen and would later receive the Academy Award for Best Picture.
