I posted a question here (right under the heading) since I can't get a password reminder from the forums (the form fills out fine but I never get the email): there doesn't seem to be a specific policy anywhere on "Frankenguns" and how / if we cover them. What's your opinion? Vangelis 09:03, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Hey. So first off, a disclaimer, I am posting the following message for each of the Admins so don't think I'm spamming. Just want to get input from all of you. I have been working on a number of infoboxes for different pages (Template:Infobox Movie, Template:Infobox TV, Template:Infobox Video Game). I have already gotten some help from Bunni who installed an additional add-on to facilitate the templates. I would love to get some feedback from you (and other admins) regarding these. Do you like the format? Are there things you would like changed? Should additional information be added? The nice thing is that with the add-on that Bunni installed, you do not have to provide all the information for the infobox. Any variables left blank will simply not be printed.

*My personal take would be to treat the gun as if it's a movie prop and ask what it would be: for example, if you were building a movie version of the Pulse Weapon from FEAR 2, it'd probably be based on a resin cast of an F2000 or an actual F2000 reciever, with a lot of embellishments. On the other hand, if you were going for, say, the BLADE weapon from Vanquish, it'd just be a few gun bits stuck on a body made from scratch; you could probably ID the various bits, but they're bits of a gun, not a whole one.<br><br>If I was covering that gun in the picture I drew, I'd probably go for the section heading "Eryx" (in quote marks) with both weapon images below it, linking to both gun pages but probably not adding it to either list. Obviously this gets complicated with some game weapons that have more than two "donor" guns or a lot of fictional bits. The way I see it, if it can be clearly ID'd as a real weapon hybrid, it's within IMFDB's remit to inform people what real weapons it's a hybrid of.<br><br>One thing about the rules, though; they are rather tricky to find. They probably ought to be under the "General Information" link in the sidebar (where I first looked), but it seems they're only accessible from the front page.<br><br>Also, don't let what that anon guy said get to you; I've modded other sites and dealt with plenty of idiots like that. Anything that affects them is automatically someone abusing their powers, since clearly they can do no wrong themselves. [/sarcasm] Also, I think I've figured out where he got that name from, if you want me to tell you. Vangelis 08:25, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Finally, I would like to see how you feel about my adding these to pages. I have gotten positive feedback from a number of users (including at least 3 admins) but before I add this to more than a dozen or so pages (which I have done for testing purposes) I want to really get full permission. I know that sweeping changes are a MAJOR no-no without full admin approval. Check out the thread in the forum (http://forum.imfdb.org/showthread.php?t=1942). I look forward to hearing your feedback! :-) --Zackmann08 11:15, 9 May 2012 (CDT)
**Considering at the point you said that he was going borderline-stalker on you, I'd say you had every right to be rude. I'm only surprised you didn't ban him outright for it. Also, if you don't want your personal info to be accessible, you should probably delete the edits from your user page's history as well, otherwise people can just look up the older versions of it. Vangelis 07:14, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
***Not having seen this Wiki's moderator controls, I couldn't be sure; I know you can delete page diffs because Wikipedia does it all the time (people do lovely things like spam moderators' telephone numbers as edit reasons over there), so if you can't see it immediately you might be best off asking bunni if it needs a sysop to do it. ==Valkyria Chronicles / fictional guns ==
Just finished cleaning up the Valkyria Chronicles page and re-adding the fictional firearms like you said to. But it got me thinking (and I'm just bouncing ideas around here, take them or leave them) that maybe the policy regarding fictional weapons in video games and animation (which right now is rather vaguely addressed in the policy guidelines) should be that a work should include at minimum at least one real design (that's current policy, I know, but it's worth rehashing since it's what keeps Halo and Final Fantasy away) and that fictional designs listed on the page should be either:
:(A) Realistic-looking enough that a layman could possibly mistake them for a real weapon (Example: Valkyria Chronicles, half of GITSs fictional guns)
:(B) Be important for trivia purposes (Example: the M41A's cameo in Excel Saga)
:(C) Be based off of the same mechanical concepts as firearms in the real world (i.e. could conceivably exist if someone was willing to sit down and make them) (Example: the other half of the fictional guns in GITS)
:(D) Be important/iconic firearms in that particular work (Example: Hellsing's Joshua and Jackal, Harlock's Dragoon)
Instances works where the only real firearm designs are "modified" versions of real world designs (like the guns in the F.E.A.R. games (that thing in F.3.A.R. is obviously just a UMP with a bunch of crap stuck on it) or the P90 is Solid State Society) are rare enough that they could be considered on an individual basis.
Of course, like I said, this is just me bouncing an idea around. Think of it as me thinking out loud on the internet.

On a side note, the weapon pages for the Joshua and Jackal should probably be nuked. Everything there is already covered in the Hellsing article, and having pages for fictional prop guns is one thing, having pages for fictional guns that only exist in one (or two, however you wanna' count it) animated work is pushing it.

Hello, good sir, I hope you don't mind me posting this here, if so please take every right to delete it. But, I have come to plead for your help and expertise. I have added some new discussion to Leon's handgun(s) in Resident Evil 6, and I am asking for your opinion, and if you agree with the evidence I have provided, that you could back me up. If you think I'm an idiot I will admit defeat haha I'm only asking for your expertise. Thanks, again.  --[]

Joshua & Jackal
Resident Evil Apocalypse
:They'll never appear in anything else, and there are too many admins/senior members who would like to see both the Anime and Video Game sections completely nuked (I may not use the forums much, but I do read 'em). Stuff like the Joshua and Jackal pages just make it look like the anime/VG sections are trying to worm their way into the rest of the site. I also think the two "America's Army 3" weapon pages (the grenades and Obran pages) should get nuked too. They're not real props, and there's nothing there that couldn't be covered in the games' pages.

:Also, I noticed that we have a category for anime TV shows ("Anime Series", it think it is?) but not one for Anime Movies and OVAs. Mind if I make them?--PistolJunkie 02:23, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I was wondering if I could have your permission to work on Resident Evil Apocalypse you know make the weapons all sorted out like it is on the resident evil extinction page? If not then I wont bother you again.

::Then should we get rid of the Series category? Seems a little strange to only have a category for one release method.--PistolJunkie 03:59, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Thank you it will be great.

:::Another quick question; what's the minimum amount of time that an article has to be around for before it gets the "Noeffort" tag due to sucky descriptions and no screenshots? I try and do cleanups every now and then, but I'm always hesitant to put that on a crummy page unless it's at least a year old.--PistolJunkie 05:42, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Someone on another forum asked me what guns the bodyguards and police chief used, and I realized that their Glock 17s aren't listed on the page. Unfortunately, I seem to be unable to upload images currently. Since I don't know when the problem will be fixed, I've already made a section for them. :It's not a matter of editing control (I can edit now just fine), it's some sort of software glitch. I can't upload image files, the damn server ignores them. I presume this is one of the possible problems that Bunni said could occur, but with the number of issues that other users seem to be having, it would be unfair to expect him to be able to magically fix everything overnight. One question; wouldn't you say that the gun you describe as 'Beretta 92FS' is more likely a 'Vektor Z88'? There is no way telling really but since the movie has many Vektor guns, I would say it's more probable a Z88 than a 92FS.

Thanks for the quick reply. Reason I thought you did this page is that your name appears on top when you open the page to edit. Sorry about that, am relatively new here.
Sorry for being an asshole on that page. I may have gotten a bit carried away.--That&#39;s the Way It&#39;s Done ([]) 17:43, 25 February 2015 (EST)

As far as proof is concerned for the pistol being a Z88 (and not a regular 92FS), I don't have any really. However, with (a) the Z88 having been a service pistol in South Africa and (b) the many other Vektor guns being used, my best bet would be on the Z88.
Waco
By the way, what's the evidence that the gun in question is actually a 92FS? In order to get a perfect determination, you'd need to see the engravings on the slide or the logo on the grip. As long as you don't have that, I guess 'flying by the seat of your pants' is the best course of action.
Are the screenshots you put up from just the trailer and are what episodes are these from? You didn't put any episode numbers in your screenshots and captions. Please add episode numbers to your future screenshots and please identify in the captions what episodes the current screenshots are from. --Ben41 ([]) 03:26, 2 February 2018 (EST)

And what proof do you have that it's a Vektor Z88 and not just a regular 92FS? Aside from the other Vektor guns present?
He's overestimating his contribution to at least the first two Telltale Walking Dead games. The majority contributor was me on those and I painstakingly screencapped many of the images from YouTube playthroughs (hence the varying quality) while others I got from the TWD Wiki (which I did with their permission, mind you). I figured that the guy is a liar. I mean people have been kicked from here for being racist. I have a reasonable suspicion that the former user has a name here related to his Avatar on Quoara. The guy is not in fact banned but he was probably warned that his behavior was out of line. Rockwolf66 ([]) 02:10, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

Seems kind of harsh to have nuked the Turok page. Sure most of the guns are fictional, but at least 3-4 of them look like real-hworld weapons (The minigun first of fall, the rocket launcher that looks like a Stinger that fires RPG-7 rocket heads, the shotgun that looks like a futuristic hybrid between a SPAS-12 and SPAS-15, and the pistol looks like a Walther P99, with a longer slide, and the grenade which is basically a m67 grenade.) IMHO, it looks like the devs did some research. Besides, what about the Fallout pages, most of the guns in 3 and New Vegas are fictional (but as per standards, look enough like real-weapons). Just my two cents, and I don't mean to cause any trouble. - User:1morey October 7, 2011 8:09 PM (EST)
Apparently, what ultimately prompted him to write this is the fact that I indirectly mentioned him in the BF5 talk page, even though I was talking more about the situation that happened back then, not because it was specifically him. I mean, I barely had any interaction with him, and it doesn't matter which user it was, I would have made the same comment anyway. --Ultimate94ninja ([]) 02:44, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

Spartan198 ([]) 05:34, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

I think there's a limited case for including hybrid weapons, if:
I wouldn't call this guy a stalker. More like some disgruntled dude with an axe to grind. "not racist enough". Guess he doesn't know what race we all are. Excalibur01 ([]) 20:56, 10 September 2019 (EDT)

* The weapon as a whole looks real enough to fool someone (for example, if the Eryx rifle on my userpage appeared in something, people would concievably ask what kind of gun it was). It's just as important that we point out believable weapons which are not real, otherwise it looks like we forgot to include them. This would protect, for example, Leon's "handgun" weapon in Resident Evil 4, which is made up but looks like an authentic and believable modern pistol design, and really does need to be included to explain it actually isn't one.
I think everyone who's been monitoring this long enough knows I actually haven't made any edits or messages in a long ass time. WACO was the last page I made. I really don't go out of my way to correct users unless to make a direct conversation. I really don't know what he's referring to about me correcting his racist comments. Though I am flattered that he'd address me as "Marine Corps" Excalibur01 ([]) 21:00, 10 September 2019 (EDT)
* It is clearly weapon X with embellishments from weapon Y, with distinctive features of both (eg the pistol in Black; we can also easily ID both guns there because the developers actually said it was a Beretta / Deagle hybrid anyway) rather than just parts of those weapons attached to something largely fictional (again, the example of the BLADE in Vanquish, I can give you a shot of that if you like). This does have a great degree of room for interpretation, but there's no way to make a solid rule for fictional weapons that wouldn't either rule out authentic-looking fictional guns or allow all kinda of obviously fake ones.
* There are other weapons in the work which are clearly real (so no games like Killzone where everything is a frankengun). I'd add "weapons other than grenades" since I can think off-hand of about four games in total that feature made-up grenade designs.

This would keep really outlandish things out like that ridiculous shotgun from FEAR 3 (I'm really not sure the pistol in that game belongs on the main page either, and the G3A3 is pretty borderline) and keep things to the standards of weird-looking but relatively believable guns seen in FEAR 2 (which we've usually used as the "no more franken than these" yardstick).
