Early FN FAL prototype - .280 British

The FN FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger) was designed by Dieudonné Saive and Ernest Vervier from 1947 to 1951. It is also called the FN LAR (Light Automatic Rifle), the English translation of its Belgian French name. The fact that there are so many variants, made by different countries and different names for the same models, causes a lot of confusion regarding what particular FAL is in what movie. For the most part, only the major variants of the gun will have been seen in movies with wide distribution, (the original Belgian version, U.S. versions, the Israeli Versions and British/Commonwealth Version). The early FAL prototypes were chambered in intermediate cartridges like 7.92x33mm and .280 British, in an attempt to create an assault rifle along the lines of the German Sturmgewehr 44, but after 7.62x51mm NATO was adopted as the standard NATO rifle cartridge, the FAL design was altered to accommodate the more powerful round.

Specifications

(1953 - Present)

Type: Battle Rifle, Assault Rifle

Caliber: 7.92x33mm (prototype), .280 British (prototype), 7.62x51mm NATO, 5.56x45mm NATO (Argentine FALMP III and Brazilian IMBEL variants)

Capacity: 20, 30-round box magazine. (Argentine FALMP III Type 2 variant uses Steyr AUG magazines, Brazilian IMBEL variants use STANAG Magazines)

Fire Modes: Safe/Semi-Auto/Full-Auto; Safe/Semi-Auto on inch-pattern FALs.

The FN FAL and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:

Variants of the standard FN FAL:

  • 50.00: Standard version. Licensed clones of the 50.00 are made by IMBEL of Brazil as the IMBEL LAR, and by DGFM of Argentina as the FALM IV (Fusil Automatico Liviano Modelo IV).
  • 50.61: Paratrooper version with folding stock and standard 533 mm (21.0 in) barrel.
  • 50.62: Paratrooper version with folding stock, short 458 mm (18.03 inch) barrel, and folding charging handle.
  • 50.63: Paratrooper version with folding stock, shorter 436 mm (17.16 in) barrel, and folding charging handle.
  • 50.64: Paratrooper version with folding stock, standard 533 mm (21.0 in) barrel, hiduminium alloy lower receiver, and folding charging handle similar to the L1A1.
  • G Series: A series of 1,836 semi-automatic FAL rifles imported into the United States by Browning Arms Company from FN between 1959 and 1963. They had a selector that could not be moved to the fully automatic position, and did not have the automatic sear. Changes with ATF standards meant that these import FAL rifles, previously considered to be not machine guns, are now machine guns and will be subject to the NFA. The rifles already imported into United States remain legal and are exempt from the NFA. G-series rifles are identical to early FN production guns and are not modified for importation.
  • StG 58: The Sturmgewehr 58 is the former standard infantry rifle of the Austrian Armed Forces. The StG 58 featured a unique hybrid flash hider/grenade launcher muzzle device, and also featured a bipod and a ribbed metal handguard.
  • G1: The G1 is a variant adopted for a relatively short period by West Germany. It features a bipod and ribbed metal handguard like the StG 58, but has its own muzzle device.
  • T48: A version of the FN FAL trialed by the United States in the mid-1950s, but was not adopted; the M14 was adopted over the T48.

Note that FN LAR is simply a foreign English market name for the FN FAL. There is no actual difference between the FN LAR and FN FAL.

The FALO is known as the Model 50.41 or 50.42; 50.41 has a synthetic stock, while 50.42 has a wooden stock. Variants of the FALO are used by Canada as the C2A1 and by Australia as the L2A1.

Canadian C1A1 - 7.62x51mm NATO. The Canadian C1A1 is quite different from other Commonwealth L1A1s, having different sights and a wood handguard without any vent holes. It is also unique among all FAL variants in that the front of the top cover is open and it has an integrated guide allowing the magazine to be refilled from stripper clips whilst it is attached to the gun.

The L1A1, also commonly referred to as the SLR (Self Loading Rifle) is the British version of the FN FAL which also saw extensive service with other Commonwealth countries. They are commonly referred to as "inch pattern" rifles (as opposed to the FN FAL which is "metric pattern") due to the rifle being designed and tooled to imperial measurements, but they also feature a number of design changes and improvements (it is these changes in the pattern which make inch and metric parts generally non interchangeable, rather than the minuscule differences in the measurements). These differences include a larger magazine release, a different selector switch, relocated take-down lever, a folding charging handle, "sand cuts" on the bolt, skeletonized front sight wings and a larger flash hider, along with different furniture depending on the time period and country.

In Commonwealth service the SLR was often seen fitted with its distinctive SUIT (Sight Unit Infantry Trilux) tritium-illuminated 4x telescopic sight. SUITs owned by private collectors usually do not illuminate, since the tritium sources degrade after 8-12 years, and are often missing the cover for the tritium source as well.

The Ishapore 1A1 SLR is the domestically produced Indian variant of the FAL rifle. It is not however a licensed copy, but is instead reverse engineered from the commonwealth inch pattern rifles. However, the Indian designers of the weapon made alterations to the design resulting in a mix between a metric and inch pattern rifle without the parts compatibility of other FAL variants and copies.

The IMBEL IA2 weapon system is an updated version of both the 5.56 MD-97 and 7.62 NATO M964 A1 MD-1 ParaFAL with new polymer furniture. Development primarily focused on the 5.56 version, though a 7.62 version was also developed in parallel. The 5.56mm IA2 has been adopted by the Brazilian Armed Forces as their new standard rifle.

The two current variants of the 5.56mm IA2 are the carbine version (Ca 5,56 IMBEL IA2) and the assault rifle version (Fz Ass 5,56 IMBEL IA2); both have the same barrel length, and differ only in that the carbine version is semi-auto only while the assault rifle version has full-auto fire. The two current variants of the 7.62mm IA2 are a long-barrel select-fire rifle (Fz Ass 7,62 IMBEL IA2) and a short-barrel, semi-auto carbine (Ca 7,62 IMBEL IA2).

A whole host of fictional photoshopped IMBEL IA2 prototype variants have circulated online, and some of them have even been modeled into video games under the mistaken assumption that they were legitimate variants. These green-tinted photographs are in fact made by the Small Arms Illustrated project, and do not exist in reality.
