High Noon (1952)

High Noon is the classic 1952 Western starring Gary Cooper as Will Kane, a recently retired marshal of a small town who finds himself at odds with his pacifist wife and the town citizens when a killer is found to be arriving on the noon train to take revenge. The film was directed by Fred Zinnemann (Behold a Pale Horse, From Here to Eternity, The Day of the Jackal) and would go on to receive Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Editing. High Noon Part II: The Return of Will Kane was a television film sequel that aired in 1980. In 2000, a television film remake starring Tom Skerritt as Will Kane aired in the US on the TBS channel. In addition, the themes of a single lawman facing down incredible odds would be seen in numerous films of varying genres over the next 5 decades including Outland and Cop Land.
