Most of the story is told during the Spanish Civil War, where Torres struggles with being a spy for the Nationalists whilst fighting alongside Republicans, and Escrivá struggles with being a Catholic priest in Republican-occupied territory.

T-26 Light Tank
A Soviet-made T-26 appears in one of the battle scenes. During the Spanish Civil War, the Soviet Union was the only country to overtly supply the Republicans with heavy equipment. Interestingly, only Russian crews were allowed to crew these tanks.

A He-51 appears in the film, used by Nationalists to bomb Madrid, almost killing Father Escrivá. The He-51 was supplied to the Nationalists very early in the war by Germany.
