It was based on the play Fear and Misery of the Third Reich by Bertolt Brecht. WThis movie told about horrors of the Nazi German regime under the Hitler dictatorship. Whenever, Soviet censurship found several paralels with the period of Great Purge and this movie was not allowed to screen for the several years. This movie also known under the title The School of Meanness (Russian: Школа подлости; Shkola podlosti).
