Disscussion

So I took the photos of my M&PS. where the the other photos come from? :) MoviePropMaster2008 05:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

The other photos came from various odd sources on google images- giantpandadestroyer

(a) Please sign your comments so we know who wrote it, and (b) I'm putting them here since those variants are not as common as the others and also because they are jacked images. MoviePropMaster2008 18:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Smith & Wesson M&P- .40S&W
This gun is way too damn cool to not be in movies for much longer-S&Wshooter 21:05, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Have you ever shot this gun? (awaiting your answer before I continue ;) ) MoviePropMaster2008 06:02, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
I have shot this gun. I have to say its one of the smoothest pistols ever- giantpandadestroyer
Nope, MPM, but I have handled it several times-S&Wshooter 22:05, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
hahaha. Well Thanks for answering the question  :) The only reason why I queried was that EVERY police department who adopted this handgun, immediately shifted to another gun within 9 months. I have buddies on SFPD, LAPD, and SDPD who hurl the most vile epithets at this pistol. Though I have shot the gun and don't think anything wrong with it, I've only shot it a few times but, a lot of cops hate it and didn't want to have their lives depend on it. Officially the SFPD adopted the gun for a whole 6 months, then immediately went to the SIG-Sauer 226 Stainless, LOL! I was just curious if you (a S&W Expert) knew anything behind this rampant hate of the gun in LEO circles ;) If you have heard anything let me know! My sources are not that forthcoming, except for their own personal bias.) Thanks for the reply. MoviePropMaster2008 03:33, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I have a buddy who bought the .45 version of the M&P shortly after it came out and has nothing but praise for it. However, what makes a good civilian pistol doesn't necessarily transfer to the professional world. -Anonymous
PS: as for the reason behind the hatred of the gun, I've heard some anecdotal evidence that the gun has a problem with the slide locking back while there are still rounds left in the magazine.
In my experience (handling, not firing), it's a decent pistol, but it's nothing outstanding. Besides the fact that it's ugly, my only problem with it is that the slide release is too small and stiff (and I say that as someone who's used to SIGs). I also can recall thinking that the release feels like it's made out of some super-light aluminum composite, almost as if the slightest vibration would send it upwards. So if it can cause the mags to lock (even when partially-full), I wouldn't be surprised. -MT2008 04:57, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I have fired the .45 version of the M&P and was not overly impressed with it. However, I am not to fond of polymer, striker-fired guns in general. -Anonymous
I fired the 9mm version and I really liked it. Really comfortable recoil, trigger felt really good, and easy to sight. -protoAuthor 17:50, 21 March 2011 (CDT)
A friend of mine shoots IPSC 3-gun. He used a P226 for quite a few years before buying a 9mm M&P. The way he goes on about it, Smith & Wesson invented the next thing better than sliced bread. I haven't shot it, but I can say that it would have to be pretty darn good to get me to put down my XD45. --redram355 23:56, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
What does the departments that have used the M&P long term think of them? Not every department that adopted the pistol stopped using it months later because i know for a fact the New Mexico State police has been using the M&P357 for a while now and the Atlanta Police Department uses the M&P40 if I'm not mistaken. I have shot these series of pistols and i find them very reliable and natural in my hands i regularly carry my M&P9. --Gunman06 20:15, 20 March 2011 (CDT)

I don't personally like polymer pistols, they never feel right in my hand because of the polymer frame. I prefer metal guns like the Hi Power. --FIVETWOSEVEN 00:23, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I found a source that addresses some of the issues with the pistol. I will Post a link -Anonymous [1]

This seems to be in line with stuff I've read on other gun boards about S&W quality going down the toilet these past few years. --funkychinaman 12:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Here is a link that praises the M&P in Civilian and LEO circles to me no one person can truly speak for everyone when it comes to the quality of different pistols to include the M&P I know people in my unit that love S&W Sigma's everyone is different. --Gunman06 17:42, 21 March 2011 (CDT) [2]

Breaking up page

Any objections to breaking up the page into the M&P 40, M&P 45, M&P compact, Etc...? --Zackmann08 19:28, 4 January 2012 (CST)

Yeah definitely. Not calibers though. I'd use the H&K USP page for a template.--Predator20 21:09, 4 January 2012 (CST)
Just to clarify, 'Yea definately.' Means I should do it? I technically asked if there were any objections, just want to make sure you didnt mean "yes I am objecting." --Zackmann08 23:02, 4 January 2012 (CST)
Yeah you should definitely break the page up, sorry. --Predator20 10:58, 5 January 2012 (CST)
no worres. Just wanted to be sure. --Zackmann08 12:15, 5 January 2012 (CST)

I went ahead and added the Compact version. Should I add any of the others? So far the compact and Full Size are the only ones that have appeared. (Note that I am working from the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_%26_Wesson_M%26P) --Zackmann08 15:03, 5 January 2012 (CST)

Also, (according to wikipedia) the M&P Full Size DOES NOT come in .45 ACP. Only the M&P .45 comes in .45 ACP. Is that correct?
FINALLY got around to doing this... --Zackmann08 18:56, 31 January 2012 (CST)

Springfield XD

Hi, Could You Gun Guys Just Explain The Diffrences Between The M&P And XD As They Seem To Be Visually Similar, Similar To Be Sued Over As Glock Sued The Sigma Even To They Arn't That Similar-ish. ZacharyXD [Dont Know How To Sign Posts With Hyperlink. Sorry]

To sign posts you case either hit the signature button (2nd buton from the right at the top of the text edit window) or just type ~~~~. As for the differences between the two they don't really look very similar at all to me, no more so than mny other polymer framed pistols. Just a few differences, the XD has a grip and trigger safety and the M&P doesn't, the XD's slide extends further forward of the frame and has full length rails along the side, the M&P has distinctive scaled serrations as opposed to the dtraight ones on the XD, the XD has a hooked trigger guard, the M&P grips have a leather-ish texture as opposed to the XD which has a grooved front and backstrap with a separated stipples central panel and a thumb dent, the list goes on. As for how Glock has been able to sue some companies, this is because they have trademarked the "shape" of their pistol, most notably the rectangular solid block shape of the slide which is square at the front (which is how they could attack the Sigma, after it was redesigned the top edges of the slide was rounded off so it wasn't square). Neither the XD nor the M&P have this so they are not really a viable target for Glock to sue (which they LOVE doing). Read this, it explains it better. --commando552

M&P45c

There is a compact variant of the .45 variant, it has a longer barrel than the other compact models and has front cocking serrations, like the full size model: [3] --SmithandWesson36 01:59, 4 September 2012 (CDT)

I think the compact variant uses the same slide as the 4" barrelled M&P45:
