Work in progress

I'm working on this a little at a time. Some of the main sidearms used by the main characters will be blank for a while until I get to that season. I figure the main characters primary guns go first then the thugs and whatever guest star in an episode. Predator20 02:44, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I predict that this page is going to have a looooootttt of guns by the time this is finished. -Gunman69 16:25, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
There is almost 50 on the list right now, but a lot of caps are missing. I hope to see 80+ by the time it's all done. We got a ways to to go. I hope to do at least 2 episodes a week. Predator20 01:02, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

The screencaps look great. The page is really coming along. --Jcordell 16:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

It really is. I think we are going to have much more than 80 guns. I think we should get as many pics as possible, then when it's all done, we'll weed some of the pics out, so that the page isn't overcrowded with pics, especially the guns that all the villains seem to use, like the MAC-10 or the 1911s (they are always used by henchmen, we get it, lol) because I think by the end we will have literally hundreds of pics. What do you guys think? -Gunman69 23:42, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Guys Remember, A M16 without a foward assist is just a M16. Not a M16A1.-Oliveira 23:48, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Oliveira, some here aren't M16 experts, I haven't studied them enough (don't really care too), neither is Gunman69 I guess since he's been posting the M16 pics lately. Point them out and we'll fix them. --Predator20 23:54, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm fixing them. I find hard to belive you two don't know what a Forward Assist is. I mean, is it that hard to see the difference between the M16's receiver and the M16A1?-Oliveira 00:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Like I said Oliveira, I haven't studied them enough. I don't really care for M16s. I have a Mini-14 myself.
Gunman69, if that is the case. It will be one of largest here. Yeah we'll have to weed out some of the pics. I think 10 pics per gun max works best. --Predator20 00:09, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that seems like a good amount. And I think that will be the case because we haven't even gone through a whole season and we already have like 70 guns. -Gunman69 00:54, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Wow, this page is really shaping up to be impressive! I'm amazed you guys have the work ethic to do a show like this, which had a huge variety of weapons and ran for multiple seasons. I'm always afraid to do TV shows, because there tend to be way too many guns that getting them all is a nightmarish prospect. -MT2008

Even though I have some movies I'd like to cap. I saw what poor shape this page was in a week ago, surprising for a popular show in its time . I decided something needed to be done. I have all the seasons on dvd, Gunman69 has most of season 2. So I think in another month and half, most of it will done. I'm going to cap "Smugglers Blues" tonight. The last few episodes of season 1, I have done haven't had crap. --Predator20 01:19, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks MT2008! This page looked terrible before, but it looks much, much better now. It's going to be a huge page when it gets all done, likely one of the biggest on IMFDB. I never actually realized how many guns were used in this show until we started working on this page! -Gunman69 05:47, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Gunman, stop reverting my edits. Continuity screw ups are common when it comes to guns. Talk to Karnes or MPM about it. They know. Also, read this: a thread on the forum by MPM.-Oliveira 14:47, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I am aware of that, but there's never a clear shot of the side of Tubbs' gun, so it doesn't really make sense to put part of it in the M16A1 section, and part in the M16 section. Can you explain please? Thanks! -Gunman69 15:29, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Are you only talking about Tubbs' black rifle or the rednecks rifles? Because the M16s the Rednecks use switch. And i agree, the only clear shot of Tubbs' M16 is the one where he is on the Boat. In that one, we can see that the M16 has no foward assist. I can't say if the M16s tha Tubbs' used switch. The ones where he is with Sonny you can't see the Foward Assist. I will look at the other M16 pictures.-Oliveira 17:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
The Rednecks I agree with you on. I just saw you changed Tubbs' rifle and I really couldn't see how you could possibly deduce that it was a continuity error. But it's fixed now, so we're all good. :) -Gunman69 19:45, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe if we could talk to MPM he could see some differences between the Rifle Tubb' has and the M16A1. If i remember, most of the Original M16s are civilian versions that can't fire on Full Auto and have no paddle magazine release or something like that.-Oliveira 19:49, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey, Predator, during the part of "Smuggler's Blues" when they are leaving Colombia, one of the Colombians is using an Uzi. Can you get a picture of that because the Uzi section is a little light. Thanks! -Gunman69 20:04, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I saw it in the episode, it's a real distant shot, but I just saw that the full size UZI section is a little light. I'll grab a shot if I don't have one. --Predator20 22:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I was surprised when I looked at the Uzi page because you would think that because it's a popular weapon among criminals, it would have a bunch of pictures already. -Gunman69 22:49, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah most seem to have MAC-10's. There was two 1911A1's in the episode but I think we have enough of them. One was the same nickel plated with peal grips. --Predator20 22:57, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
For the MAC-10s and 1911s, only take screenshots if they are really good closeups because those we will use in the final product. If they are kinda far away, don't bother. -Gunman69 23:45, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Just capped "The Maze". MAC-10 again. There is the Franchi with the nickel parts, kinda cool. Lots of M16's, Colt carbine, and one accidental discharge. Gunman69, I'll let you sort through the M16's when I get them posted. --Predator20 00:04, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Will do. Oliveira, you can help me too, as you are good at identifying M16s and M16A1s. -Gunman69 03:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

All the M16s are in other gun list, Rem 870, Colt Commander, etc. If some are worthy enough to be added to the M16 sections, use your judgment. --Predator20 03:31, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

You know what, guys, I'll be honest: I don't think any of these guns are M16A1s. I look at all the ones where the foward assists should be visible and I don't see them. I need a second opinion though in case I'm blind, but I just don't see them. I think they are all M16's with M16A1 flash hiders. Besides, if you look on the M16 rifle series page, it says that using M16's with A1 flash hiders was very common during the 70s and 80s. Just like the HK94 impersonating the MP5 was common during the 80s. -Gunman69 05:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, Predator: Didn't one of the SWAT member use a Ruger AC556 in "The Maze"? I thought I saw one in there somewhere. If so, take a picture of it. It wouldn't hurt the Ruger section to have another pic. -Gunman69 05:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes one of them does, when they are doing room sweeps, but the lighting is real low. I tried doing a frame by frame, still didn't didn't turn out well. I'll post it up if you feel like we need to have one. Also I still need to post up the accidental discharge. I'll post it on the talk page. --Predator20 13:12, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
There are M16A1s in the series. The screencap of Sonny with the M16A1 and the 'caps of the Brelim and the other redneck with M16A1s you can see that the forward assist is clearly evident in the screencaps.-Oliveira 13:37, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok. Just wanted to make sure. -Gunman69 15:17, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and Predator: First, no, if it's not that good of a pic, we don't necessarily need another pic of the Ruger. It's fine how it is, but more couldn't hurt, unless they are kinda bad. Second, for the accidental discharge, I'm sorta debating if we should just put it on the talk page or make a little section for it (maybe "trivia" or "fuck ups" or something like that; it's up to you). Thirdly, in "The Maze", in the part where Lt. Davis first meets Crockett, you can see he is carrying a Colt Python in his holster (it clearly has Colt grips). Could you get a pic of that for me? I really appreciate it. Lastly, I know we have a lot of MAC-10 pics, but one of the episodes you're coming up to is "Evan" (there are a few others before that, though) which revolves around the sale of MAC-10s, so there is bound to be some good pics there. If there are, get them. The more good pics, the better (and obviously we'll only keep the best ones when it's all done). -Gunman69 17:21, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
While it would be good to add more Ruger AC556 pics, I figure we still have 3 more seasons. So better ones will come along. Lastly about a Trivia section, that sounds good. Because in "The Hit List" climax. Don Johnson takes a charge (squib) right by his face, that wasn't planned it went off too early. It broke the face of his watch too. I have a snap of it. The reason I know about is reading Zubiena's thread on the Miami Vice forum. I'll grab that Python pic --Predator20 19:48, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
The Ruger is like at the point where there are just enough pictures for a good section, but if there are more you should add them. And thanks for the Python. Also, I was just watching the pilot and noticed something: When Tubbs is holding his brother's body, right next to him you can see the barrel of a CAR-15 that Tubbs was holding. Can you also grab that pic? The CAR-15 section only has 1 pic, so that one would help. Thanks! -Gunman69 20:48, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I think it would be great if we put the fuck ups in the main article not the talk page. Trivia should be in the Main page not the talk page.-Oliveira 21:31, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Great. So we're all in agreement then. -Gunman69 21:35, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

The page looks so much better. Thanks Gunman. Don't forget to put a trivia section. --Predator20 22:11, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Already did. Hey, did you get the Python and CAR-15 pics yet (and the accidental discharge)? Also, I just wanted to ask: what episode are you on now? -Gunman69 22:54, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh ok, you got the Python up I see. It's perfect. Thanks! -Gunman69 23:01, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm on "Made for each Other". Still need to go back to the pilot. --Predator20 23:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

That's cool. Take your time. BTW great job on the Trivia section! -Gunman69 00:56, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I found out about Switek using the Bren Ten from a Bren Ten Forum. You pick up all kinds of stuff. I hope to see more in that section. --Predator20 01:12, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Oliveira, can you take a look at the M16s/M16A1s for me? I tried putting them in properly, but I'd like a second opinion. If you change somethings, explain it so I know what to look for. Thanks! -Gunman69 01:21, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I just want to make sure, but it looks like we are done with Season 1. Is this true Predator or is there still a little ways to go? -Gunman69 02:12, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
I think I got everything worthwhile from season 1. Even when I get the end of season 2 finished. Still have 3 more damn seasons left. Still not bad though 1 season in less than 2 weeks. Most of season 2 is done, thanks to you. The page is looking fucking great. --Predator20 02:32, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Indeed it does. We've got a long way to go, but it looks much better then it did a few weeks ago. Great job! -Gunman69 02:53, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Damn, I hate how "Free Verse" was filmed in such low quality! You could watch other episodes and they look very clear, and then you watch "Free Verse" and the quality is so bad. Its hard to identify guns with that bad quality lol (of course, Predator, obviously I'm not blaming you). -Gunman69 06:53, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah I know. I thought the thug with the Walther MPL was using the S&W M76, because of the open stock design and it was in the trunk shot. I went back over it, that couldn't be it. Got a few new ones in the list though, that is always nice. I knew that rifle was an H&K but I couldn't find it in the H&K list. Then when you labeled it. I found out it was at the bottom of the G3 page. I may get 1 or 2 episodes of season 3 done today after the season 2 finale. --Predator20 14:43, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Rifle used by Jim Zubiena in The Hit List episode.

Mr. Zubiena responded to my posting on the Miami Vice forum. Here is his inital response:

"Hello JC, As stated in the longer post I don't believe the rifle was American made. I recollect it being a Steyr or some other European manufacturer. I went to your link and found it... flattering. BUT I have never been referred to as "lighting Jim" except by a single writer who made that up a bunch of years ago. I don't even know who he is but I was not called that in any circle I frequented. I check in here once in awhile so feel free to question. Jim"

Looking at the screencaps and the image of the Steyr - Mannlicher Sporter on the Steyr-Mannlicher page there does seem to be a resemblance. In later production of the Sporter Steyr added a cover to the bolt mechanism to make it more streamlined and possibly for portection. The image imfdb has apears to be of an earlier production model but everything else matches. Opinons? --Jcordell 18:08, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Mannlicher-Schoenauer Sporter with Scope

Here is a photo of a Steyr Mannlicher Sport that I found on a gunshop website. It resembles the one used in the episode. --Jcordell 18:14, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Error creating thumbnail: File missing

Just use that. Better than unknown. I remember reading in the long thread, not Jim but another member wrote something about a Steyr, went back to check it, but the site was down. Predator20 18:18, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Okay. I'll add that info. --Jcordell 18:19, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

JCORDELL, YOU ROCK! Good job identifying that gun! -Gunman69 18:31, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. We're lucky that Mr. Zubiena is an active contributer to the Miami Vice forum. Always nice solving a puzzle and it's nice to know that he likes our site. --Jcordell 18:33, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Progress

The other talk section was getting too big. I have a bunch of AK variants to put up from "Stone's War". I'll do it tomorrow. --Predator20 01:50, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Excellent. Keep up the good work! Also, I saw something interesting the other day: I was watching the episode "Baseballs of Death" (Season 4) and Tubbs' shotgun changes. I saw it now has a side ejection port. Not only that, the foregrip has changed (it was thicker in Seasons 4-5 than it was in Season 2). And it stays that way until the final episode I think (not sure when he changed shotguns). It looks like a cut-down Remington 870 instead of an Ithaca. I researched and I found a picture. So be on the lookout for this shotgun. When you see it, I will put the picture up then. -Gunman69 02:57, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

There wasn't much in "Kill Shot" just a S&W Bodyguard. "Walk Alone" has got some good ones. Mossberg Bullpup etc. Fishburne weilds a Mossberg 500. --Predator20 02:48, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

"Kill Shot" also had a Beretta 92F, when Agent Arriola was being searched. That was his primary weapon. -Gunman69 23:30, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I got stuck doing caps for The Limey so it wouldn't be deleted. I have to return Surveillance so I'm going to spend some working on those two. Will return soon. --Predator20 04:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

This page is getting huge. Perhaps we should consider splitting into a Part 1 and a Part 2? Is that possible? --Jcordell 19:08, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't know about that. I think it should still be on one page, but I think we should certainly limit the number of pictures. I'll weed out a lot of the pictures (I think we should only use like 1-3 pictures per weapon). That is if it's ok with you guys. -Gunman69 20:38, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

"(I think we should only use like 1-3 pictures per weapon)" I think that would be okay with the main cast standard sidearms. But with some of the other weapons used by different guest appearances, there is going to be a lot. Also while some guns are more pic excessive than others. Some are only used once and there is only one or two pics. So it balances out I feel. If the page was to be broken up I would want a page for each season. But none of the other TV shows are done like that here. I have some movies I want to get capped, so I may not do any Vice till Sun. --Predator20 21:05, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, think about it. We're not even half way done and this is already the biggest page on IMFDB. We should at least write a description about the guns like "The MAC-10 is used by various characters throughout the series" (and a lot of guns already use this description), which would adequately illustrate that it's used by many. We really don't need to have every picture up, just a few good ones. That will do the job. And I guess we could have a maximum of 5. That's ok. Definitely no to the splitting the page idea. I don't think it would look very good. -Gunman69 04:11, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

With the MAC-10, I don't even bother taking caps of those anymore. There is a lot in the S&W Model 29 too. You added the one used by David Patrick Kelly in "Home Invaders". While it was a good shot I put it in the actors page. I'm not sure about the muzzle diameter on the one used in "The Fix" doesn't look like a .44 to me. The Mossberg 500, Remington 870, and M16's there is enough of them. Unless a well known guest appearance uses one there is no need. Also with splitting up the variety of a certain type of gun, Mossberg 500 wood furniture and Mossberg 500 synthetic furniture. Breaks it up so a gun type doesn't look as large. The major point I'm making is while a few new guns may be added here and there. The page will only grow as much as we allow it. Another thing, what's wrong with having the biggest page on IMFDB? --Predator20 05:56, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm just saying that if that's the case and we're not even halfway done, there's probably a lot of excess in here. That's all. It's up to you though. -Gunman69 16:57, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

While there might be some excess shots. Mostly all the shots on the page are good shots. Let's get through season 3 and see where we are at. If it looks like one set of guns is getting too big, we'll have a trial to see what pics stay. --Predator20 17:21, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Got all the way to "Streetwise". Shame there wasn't any close ups of Wesley Snipes firing his gun. I'll put up what I got from the last 3 episodes Wed. --Predator20 01:13, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations! We have now hit 100 guns! -Gunman69 01:11, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Not counting the flare gun or taser weapon, we're tied with Mail Call at 98. We don't have any repeats either. --Predator20 03:27, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Alright, then hopefully we'll find one more gun, and then we'll be #1! We'll definitely hit 99 eventually because I know Crockett switches guns again in Season 5. And who knows how many guns appear before then. Actually, I remember in a Season 3 episode "Knock Knock Who's There?" a DEA Agent is seen using a Colt 9mm SMG, which we don't have. -Gunman69 04:33, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

BTW Predator, I was looking at the S&W in "The Fix" and I now think it is a Model 19. You're right, the muzzle diameter is too small. I'll change it back now. -Gunman69 04:39, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

We're at 100 right now, I think it'll max out at around 125 thereabouts. Seems to be a new gun every couple of episodes. I may get most of season 3 done this weekend. 24 is at 140+ but it's incomplete and done by season with repeats. When I started working on this I had no idea it would be near this big. Been fun working on it. --Predator20 12:57, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Any more usage of the Desert Eagle in the show? I know it hadn't been out for long, but you'd think it'd get more screen time then just sitting in a holster. M14fanboy 19:39, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
The page isn't complete yet. Still have a 2 1/2 more seasons to go. So the Desert Eagle will show up sometime again probably. Hopefully out of the holster. --Predator20 20:21, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
A few police officers in "Cuba Libre" use SPAS-12s. Get a picture or two of them. I'll write descriptions of the screencaps later on. I'm a bit busy right now, but I will get to them. -Gunman69 02:46, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I'll look over my caps again for "Cuba Libre" but I don't really remember seeing any officers with SPAS-12's. I'm working on Planet Terror right now. But will look over my caps and watch the end of the episode again when I get a chance. --Predator20 17:13, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

This page is getting too big

Don't know if any of you guys care, but it doesn't load or loads incompletely on many computers (I've checked on several machines) and it's getting really big. In fact this page will probably re-ignite the debate as to whether we should break up television shows into seasons, so that we don't have system crashing mega pages, like this one seems to be getting to be. MoviePropMaster2008 08:44, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, well, first I don't appreciate the questioning of if we care or not. I mean, just look at all the work we've done. That being said, you make a very valid point MPM. I do think we need to eliminate many of the pictures on here. I would really like to avoid splitting the page up, but I don't want it to be huge, so I still think we really need to limit the number of pictures on here. Thanks for the input. -Gunman69 23:12, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes it's large. Like I said in the one of the other talk sections. Lets get through season 3. Gunman and I will go through the heavy gun pic sections and see what goes. Even by limited the amount of pics per gun. I don't think it will help all that much. Because look at the how many different guns there are? While we may get a new gun here and there. I don't know how many more new guns are going show up over the next 2 1/2 seasons that need to be done. It can't be that many? Splitting up the seasons in separate pages would make loading easier. But I don't think Gunman or I want to go through all the work of splitting up and sorting what we've done. But if you and the other mods think we have to break it up into season pages. Please tell us now. Also make all the TV shows pages do the same -Predator20 23:48, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
One, you don't have to be so sensitive. I am sure there are always guys who truly don't care what others think, I had to preface the question with that so you didn't think I was lecturing you on an issue that you didn't ask input on. Some users on IMFDB are on a quest to make an ultimately complete page, which is what we all do, but in a series as mega huge as Miami Vice, it creates problems. I don't mean that there are too many images, there very well may be, but in an episodic series, it makes sense to at least track the most obvious occurrences of the guns, which means, multiple images. But Miami Vice ran for such a long time and had just SOOOO MANY guns that by design, the show is one massive conglomeration of weapons. I was previously neutral, but are leaning towards the idea that splitting up shows by seasons (a) helps viewers locate weapons without scrolling down forever and possibly (probably) missing the information and (b) doesn't diminish but elevates the show's presence on IMFDB by having multiple pages. Just a thought, but this page didn't load completely and froze up on several computers and frankly people WON'T look at the page if it take more than a minute to load. You've done an amazing amount of work. It would be a shame that a large portion of the audience won't look at it if it is too ungainly. MoviePropMaster2008 23:28, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok it's not too many pics. Just too many guns. I can deal with that. --Predator20 23:50, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, it's know big deal about the first thing you said. Let's forget it. Anyway, how about this: we should eliminate a lot of the pictures and if you still think it's too big, then we should split it into seasons. What do you guys think? -Gunman69 02:20, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I think you should split it up into seasons but not have the season pages link to the TV series category page. Just make one page for Miami vice(that would link to the TV series category page) and put links for all the seasons on that page. --AdAstra2009 02:32, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Gunman. I don't think doing that will help it all that much. Some but not much. I'll tell you what. I'm going to open whole page up and and any section that has more than 5 guns I'll take them out. We're 93k right now. Let's see how much smaller it will get. -Predator20 02:35, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm definitely in agreement that this page needs to be split up. I'm impressed by all the hard work that's gone into it, but the load time is absurdly long now. As MPM pointed out, you're going to turn off many viewers if they have to wait too long for it to load. And I think this will probably need to become IMFDB policy in the future in cases like this. TV shows are just always very hard to handle, and this one moreso than most. -MT2008 (not posting from my regular computer, but it is me guys)

It went from 91 kilobytes to 83 kilobytes. It is the amount of guns not the pics.-Predator20 02:50, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, if that's the case, than I'm ok with splitting it into seasons. I have time to do this now if you guys want. -Gunman69 03:41, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

I know you guys aren't on Season Five right now, but I thought I'd let you know that in "Borrasco" (which I am watching as I speak) I have noticed a CAR-15 variant of some sort (used to clear men playing dominos). Also, I have seen an M60 shot from a balcony, however I am not sure. Finally, I identified a Detonics Scoremaster used to kill a man in white suit (name not found, will check). In the same scene, I saw a man with pink shirt, suit and sunglasses use a Sig P228 to shoot at the limosine, but he was shot by a man with a nickel plated Sig P226/ P228. I am an amateur (15 years old to be prescise) however I felt that I could contribute to the page(s) seeing as I have all five seasons on box set, and a good eye for firearms. I apologize if I am wrong with any of this information. - Alex Brunt.

Will this ever get finished?

I have all 5 series on DVD, but have no idea how to screencapture lol. TheHeartbreakKid15 12:14, 13 October 2011 (CDT)
