The QLZ-87 and its derivative, the QLB-06, are a pair of unusual repeating grenade launchers developed by China due to dissatisfaction with AGS-17 clones. Deciding to develop a portable weapon more comparable to a general-purpose machine gun than a normal AGL, the designers elected to use the same low-pressure 35mm grenade used by some Chinese underbarrel launchers in a direct-impingement gas-operated weapon using a rotating bolt.

The earliest design, the W-87, was a top-feeding weapon featuring a wooden stock and a large conical flash hider, but by the time of the production version, these had been replaced with a large muzzle brake and a padded stock pad. The production version is known as the Type 87 grenade launcher or QLZ-87.

Though commonly claimed to be a product of Norinco Group, there is no reliable source confirming that the weapon was manufactured by Norinco Group. Some Chinese sources stated that the QLZ-87 was actually developed by a group of Hunanese manufacturers under the lead of Factory 9656 (now known as Hunan Zijiang Machine Co. Ltd.).

As with other Chinese three-letter small arms designations, there is no reliable primary source confirming what "QLZ" stands for. It is generally believed to stand for "轻兵器 榴弹发射器 自动" (Pinyin: "Qīng bīng qì, liú dàn fā shè qì, zì dòng") literally: "Small Arms, Grenade Launcher, Automatic"; the Armament Research Services brief on the QLZ-87 uses 榴蛋 (literally "pomegranate egg") instead of 榴弹 (literally "pomegranate munition", as a word it means "grenade"), which is a homophone and internet slang for grenade.

The QLZ-87 and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:

The QLB-06, also known as the QLZ-87B, is a further development of the QLZ-87 first unveiled to the public in 2006. It is focused on the "light" configuration, abandoning full-auto capability and featuring a polymer body, pistol grip, a recoil buffer, a large integrated carry handle replacing the combined charging/carrying handle of the QLZ-87, a folding charging handle on the weapon's right side, and an integral rail for mounting modern optics.
