John Russell as Stockburn with a Colt 1860 Army in Pale Rider (1985)

John Lawrence Russell (January 3, 1921 – January 19, 1991) was an American actor, and World War II veteran, most noted for playing Marshal Dan Troop in the successful ABC western television series Lawman from 1958 to 1962. Born in Los Angeles Russell served in World War II with the United States Marine Corp as an intelligence officer. He contracted Malaria while on Guadacanal and was medically discharged. Tall (6'4") and athletic Russell was usually cast in action/adventure movies and westerns. His big break came in 1958 when he was cast as Marshal Dan Troop in Lawman. After the show was cancelled Russell worked in mostly supporting roles due to being typecasted. A longtime friend of Clint Eastwood Russell was cast in The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider. Russell was an experienced horseman and gunowner and often brought the ring of authenticity to his roles. John Russell died from emphysema on January 19, 1991 (aged 70).
