Hacksaw Ridge Mel Gibson and tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield ), a US Army medic in the 77th Infantry Division who faced persecution and ridicule for his refusal to carry a weapon into battle due to his religious beliefs and ended up receiving the Medal of Honor for saving the lives of 75 of his fellow soldiers during the battle for the Maeda Escarpment in Okinawa (the eponymous Hacksaw Ridge). Shot in Australia with a mostly-local cast, the film was released to critical acclaim and nominated for numerous awards, including six Oscars (notably Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield ).
