In this case, the effects are shown through soldiers of the famed 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). Unfortunately, the release date for the film was sandwiched between Platoon and Full Metal Jacket and was overlooked. Sergeant First Class Hazard (James Caan) carries the M1911A1 during the F.T.X. (Field Training Exercise).
M14 Rifle
Though the M16A1 was being issued by 1968 the M14 was still being used by the 3rd Infantry in Washington D.C, both for ceremonial functions as well as its battle rifle. The M14 is still issued to soldiers assigned to the Old Guard.

The M16A1 is seen briefly in a television newscast of fighting in South Vietnam.
Charleville Musket
The soldiers of the Continental Color Guard are seen carrying the Charleville Musket.
M60 Machine Gun
The M60 Machine Gun appears briefly during the Field Training Exercise sequence. It is carried by Pvt. Wildman (Casey Siemaszko)
