ArmaLite AR-17 - 12 gauge

The ArmaLite AR-17 is an unusual semi-automatic shotgun produced by the ArmaLite company, who are much better known for their rifle designs. It is a short recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun that uses a rotating bolt similar to the AR-15. Most of the weapon is composed of aluminum alloy, making it a very light 5.5 pounds.

It was marketed for hunters and sport shooters and despite appearing as a full-size shotgun, holds only two rounds and lacks any kind of tubular magazine. One round is chambered and the second round is simply held in place by loading arms. The shotgun also included three interchangeable chokes and removable weights that could change the center of gravity. Its light weight, while useful for hiking through the wilderness while hunting, meant that recoil could be difficult to handle.

Around 1,200 AR-17s were produced between 1964-1965 before being discontinued due to poor sales.
