The weapon was originally designed as a close-quarters compact rifle for downed aircrews, etc. The weapon was designed in the 1960s, well before the commercial version, and was sometimes called an 'arm-gun'. A version appears as the weapon for the bounty hunter 'Bossk' in The Empire Strikes Back'.
::You're confusing this firearm with the Bushmaster Assault Rifle (which was made in the 1960s).  That's the one armed firing version.  This firearm was not introduced until the late 1980s and is a completely different gun. The Bushmaster M17S Bullpup Assault Rifle - 5.56mm. This was an attempt to create a domestic U.S. Built Bullpup rifle, since so many were being denied import by the ATF (including the SA80, the Steyr AUG, and the Norinco M86S, all of which were barred from import in the 1980s). It takes standard AR15 magazines.
