The M83 smoke grenade is a modern version of the AN/M8 using less toxic terephthalic acid (TA or TPA) filler instead of hexachloroethane-zinc (HC). Originally designed in the 1990s purely for use as a training grenade, but has since started to replace the AN/M8 in combat: in 2009, the word "training" was removed from its description in FM 3-23.30 ("Grenades and Pyrotechnic Signals").

The AN/M8 smoke grenade appears in the following films and video games used by the following actors:

The AN/M8 HC Smoke Grenade is a standard white burning-type smoke grenade developed in the 1940s with a 1.2-2.0 second fuze, using hexachloroethane-zinc (HC) filler, producing a smoke screen for 105-150 seconds depending on weather conditions.

The smoke produces toxic fumes, and warnings issued with the grenade states it is not to be used in enclosed spaces unless soldiers are wearing breathing gear, due to producing "harmful hydrochloric fumes." The actual dangerous chemical produced is zinc chloride, which is caustic, can cause serious respiratory problems, and displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces. The steel grenade casing also becomes very hot when the grenade is producing smoke, to the point it can cause fires.

As a result of this, any AN/M8 HC appearing in a live-action production is likely a replica or empty shell dispensing a much more actor-friendly smoke mixture. As of the September 2000 version of FM 3-23.30 ("grenades and pyrotechnic signals") the AN/M8 HC was listed as obsolete.
