''Higurashi no Naku Koro ni'' (translated as "''When the Cicadas Cry''" and released in the U.S. as "''When They Cry''") is an anime adaptation of a series of sound novels released by 07th Expansion. The majority of the story takes place in June of 1983 in the rural Japanese village of Hinamizawa. Most of the story arcs shown in the anime are in fact alternate versions of the same events, with the arcs starting out in a similar fashion but ending in drastically different yet equally gruesome ways.

The anime consists of three separate installments: Two television series ("''Higurashi no Naku Koro ni''" and "''Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai''"), and a five episode OVA ("''Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei''"). So far, only the first season has received an English release (originally by Geneon later by Funimation Entertainment, with both releases now out of print), and the latter two remain unlicensed. All three are included in this article.

==M16A2==
The soldiers from the special forces Banken carry [[M16 rifle series#M16A2 Rifle|M16A2]] rifles outfitted with short 20 round magazines. It's presence could be seen as anachronistic, as the M16A2 was not approved by the D.o.D. until 1982 and languished in limbo until it was first issued in October of 1984, making its presence in the hands of a rogue Japanese government agency before it was even issued to U.S. forces very improbable.

==Airsoft Gun==
Mion (and occasionally her twin, Shion) is often seen with a generic airsoft pistol in a shoulder holster. She never draws it in the anime, thus making it impossible to determine what gun it is modeled after (although in the "Higurashi - Daybreak" PC game, it is depicted as a [[Tokarev TT-33]]). It's only real purpose is to help solidify her "tomboy" image.
