Was it my imagination or was IMFDB down for at least one day?  Is this something we should be concerned about?  :)  Was it the server change over?  Things DO LOOK much faster right now. :)  Hope everything is okay and we haven't moved the servers to Haiti or some other hurricane ravaged place. ;)  MPM2008

Hey
Upgrade Issues
Hey Bunni, thanks for helping me create the Resident Evil page, just to let you know it's all done. Also, I wanted to know if you allowed 18th century weapons on this site too because I'm thinking about doing a page on The Last Samurai. Thanks.

Reply
If you notice any upgrade issues, or hit any errors on the site, you can let us know here or email manager at imfdb.org

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure it was okay with you before I started, and no problem, it was fun creating the Resident Evil page.
Known Issues
Issue: MediaWiki no longer allows accented characters in page titles. 1,606 pages that had accented characters in their page titles have been moved to new pages with the Broken\ prefix.
Plan: We are working on a script to automatically move these pages to new pages with valid titles.

The Last Samurai is finished
Issue: Some images are missing.
Plan: We are working on a script to automatically pull these images from the backups.

Hey Bunni, I just wanted to let you know The Last Samurai page is finished, but some of the images I put up might need to be fixed. Sorry to bother you about it, but I don't know how to make the images fit together as well as you can. And also, I noticed you are creating a page on Heroes. I know a website where you can find the guns used on the show, go to this site:
Issue: Full SSL encryption is now enabled. If you were logged in via http your cookie may no longer be valid.
Fix: If you see errors related to 'session hijacking' clear all imfdb.org cookies and log in again.

And search weapons, and it should bring you to a page that shows you the weapons that are used in the show, hope it helps.

Taking a short break.
There is a problem with this weapon. The link is not working. The German letter (ü) does not work in the link. --Emto_PL (talk) 08:47, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
:Thanks, this is the same issue as the page titles. There is a script to 'fix' the image titles but I'm not 100% sure of its consequences so I'll try it on the development server first and report back. --bunni (talk) 16:19, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
::When will the bug be fixed? Lots of websites are down all the time.--Emto_PL (talk) 11:37, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Hey Bunni, I just want to let you know I'll be taking a short break so I can think of a film to make a page about next. Also, thanks for editing the pages Orca and I made and putting them on Wikipedia.
"Keep me logged in" doesn't work
Image:Prof-Case.jpg semi-autos
Every time I visit IMFDB after previous closing of the browser, and even after I closed the tab with the browser still active,  I have to log in again, despite I check the "Keep me logged in" box every time. This happens regardless of whether I performed any actions, or just visited the site. I changed the previously used eight-digit password to a ten-digit one, as recommended, but nothing has changed. I use Firefox, hadn't a chance to test in on Chrome or Edge. Sorry to disturb you with this issue, it's not a fatal problem, but it would be good to solve somehow in the future, it if possible. Thanks. --Greg-Z (talk) 15:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
:Can you try specifically going to the https://www.imfdb.org version of the site? You have to type it in manually in the search bar, you'll know you have it because the you'll see a lock in url bar. For me that keeps me logged in on Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. If you have restrictive cookie settings or a cookie blocker that might also be logging you out. We'll move to a 100% https site for everyone next week. --bunni (talk) 16:25, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
:::Following your instructions, I typed the address and was redirected to http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page with crossed out lock in the url bar. Then I logged in, checking the box, then closed the tab, opened again the HTTPS address - and was not logged. Sorry, maybe I did something wrong?
::::If you click the Random page link does it take you to a https version with a lock in the url bar or a http version with a broken lock? For me I don't get a redirect if I manually type https in the url bar and Random page sends me to https with a lock in the url bar. If Random page doesn't send you to https then you may have a 'preferHTTP' cookie that keeps redirecting you to http, you could try clearing cookies in your browser for imfdb. In Firefox if I click the lock there's a dropdown for 'Clear cookies and site data...' --bunni (talk) 17:06, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
:::::As far as I know, I don't use any restrictive cookie settings or a cookie blocker. At least I had no problems with keeping logged in the old version. I'll try to inspect my browser for any possible cookie problems, and also I will try to install Chrome and test it. If the problem will still exist, and nobody else suffer it... OK, it's not fatal, I will just log in each time. :) Thanks! --Greg-Z (talk) 16:51, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
::::::When clicking Random page, I get into HTTPS page with lock. I installed Chrome, and everything works perfect, so the problem was only in Firefox only. After cleaning Firefox cookies, I'm logged in correctly, so looks like the problem was on my side and now it is solved. Thanks for advices, and again I apologize for disturbing you. --Greg-Z (talk) 17:24, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Took a look at the pistols in Image:Prof-Case.jpg, and I believe the one in the back is a Beretta Inox while the one in the front seems to be some sort of custom job using a 1911 frame. I think the revolver -might- be a Taurus of some kind. Orca1 9904 17:02, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks
Ey, Bunni. Thanks for upgrading the website for us, I finally now have access to this account (after checking my spam folder on my email). I've seen the reports of it that was going on the Talk:Main Page and the development on it, glad to see it finally worked out there. Also, I'd give thanks to User:Ultimate94ninja too since I asked them about the problem I was having earlier. --XSlayer300 (talk) 01:32, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip, that looks like the gun. RE: Apocalypse should be done today, I just have to add three more guns.
Another Issue
Re: Scarface
Hello, Bunni. I don't know if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I also have a problem: I updated the Verdun page with new images a week before the website upgrade. These were processed and shown correctly. But now the older images are back on the page.--HighPhigh (talk) 09:51, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
:I've had the same issue on other pages. The replaced images (after waiting the usual little while) had successfully updated themselves, but after the site upgrade a couple days later they reverted to their older versions, and are still stuck that way. Alex T Snow (talk) 22:44, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
:::I think the issue here is that there's a window of a few days before the site upgrade where updated images didn't get their new versions copied to the new server, I'm currently working to verify this. The updated images should still exist on the old server and in the backups. --bunni (talk) 22:53, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
::::That would make sense to me. For clarity, the actual updated image files themselves didn't revert and are still here on the site, it's just the pages that use them are still displaying the old version. As if the "page" didn't "ask the server" for an update, for a rather layman's way of putting it. Alex T Snow (talk) 23:04, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
:::::Oh interesting. Can you link me to one of these pages? There may be a maintenance script that I need to run to update these pages. --bunni (talk) 23:08, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
::::::One is on Strike Witches: OVA, second image in the Bofors section. The image file page also still shows the old preview (in both places) but also lists that I did in fact update it, and if you click on the image and open it fully it does actually display the new version (stitched image with more visible on the left side). In my experience this is all totally normal after updating an image, but only for a few hours-ish until the server realizes something has changed (or similar), the difference here being that I updated these almost two weeks ago. Alex T Snow (talk) 01:37, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
:::::::Possibly the problem is somehow connected with the fact that the last update of the cache was more than a week ago - 3 September 2022?--Greg-Z (talk) 06:52, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, I also like the job you did on Saving Private Ryan, you take better pictures then I do! Also, it might be awhile before I make another movie page, I have to get more Fullscreen dvds because most of my dvds are in Widescreen, and my picture don't come out so good with the two black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, but I'll do as much as I can. And thanks again for commenting my work on Scarface.
Page titles with special characters
The Beretta/M16 issue
Hi, I don't want to sound like I'm rushing you guys as I'm sure it's a headache trying to fix all this, but when it comes to page titles that now have "invalid" characters should we keep waiting for that fix script/etc you mention, or is it okay to rename them to something that works manually? I just don't want to step on any toes or screw up a larger-picture fix by fixing something individually. Alex T Snow (talk) 05:02, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
:We're working with someone now to build a script for both the Broken pages and the broken image names that have accents, but that process will probably take 2-3 weeks, in the meantime it's okay to rename them manually, it won't harm anything.  --bunni (talk) 16:23, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
::Thank you! :) Alex T Snow (talk) 18:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

I think that the M16 rifle series page should be kept together, since the guns listed on the page are essentially the same weapon, though giving the Beretta 93R its' own page is possible, so long as it's done well and kept up to the same quality standards as the other gun pages on the site. Orca1 9904 22:39, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
New Weapon Category:
: I'm afraid I goofed on making a page for the Beretta 93R; it somehow ended up getting labeled as "Beretta 92". If you could fix this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Orca1 9904 23:12, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
It is worth adding these two new categories of weapons.
<br>
Category: Anti-aircraft guns, Autocannons
<br>
Category: Anti-tank guns, Artillery, Howitzers
<br>
On the IMFDB website, we already have a lot of created pages on this subject. An example of AA weapon.
2cm FlaK 38 and AT weapon 5 cm Pak 38.
What do you think ? Complete all pages in one of these two categories. --Emto_PL (talk) 16:13, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Visual Editing?
Merge Sig Sauer P220-series pistol pages?
Would it be possible to make use of the Visual Editor that's available for WYSIWYG editing, as it's more developed and intuitive for most contributors who may not be versed in the MediaWiki markup?

I would like to suggest that all the pages for the Sig-Sauer P220-series pistols be merged into one, since they're all essentially variants of the same weapon. This merger would include the Sig Sauer P226 and Sig Sauer P228 pages, and any others I might have overlooked. Orca1 9904 16:56, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Also, there are a few extensions and features that I'd like to recommend that would improve the search functionality of the IMFDB, which I am familiar with (as I am project leader and tech support over at the Battlestar Wiki). Perhaps they could be deployed as well? Happy to discuss further. -- Joe Beaudoin (talk) 16:29, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

: I've copied the Sig P228 material onto the Sig P226 page, I just need someone to retitle the P226 page and redirect the P228 page. Orca1 9904 20:21, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

RE: Congrats
Thanks, that's great that they're featuring it. It's also good for this site since it's being advertised. And sure, I'll keep checks on the Scarface page, I already deleted one vulgar comment, I wonder how you block users like that from editing.

We need moderators
Hey Bunni, I was wondering if you knew how to get some moderators on this site to block some of the users because there's been alot of vandalism since we're gettting alot more visitors. This one user deleted the content on the main page, Scarface, wallpaper, and support, but don't worry I fixed them.

Relation between IMFDB and a former Wikipedia article?
Hey Bunni, I was curious, aside from the overall theme, is there any relation between this site and the former Wikipedia article "List of Firearms in Films" and its' sister article, "List of Firearms in Video Games? I was a frequent contributor to that article and a fervent advocate against its' deletion, and was wondering if that article is living on here? Orca1 9904 22:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Adding Admininstrators
Sure, I be more then happy to take up the status, just let me know when it's done, Thanks alot. Alienqueen11.

Re: Wikipedia article
I'm afraid I don't know any of the admins over at Wikipedia, I'm just another user there. As for your suggestion that I be a moderator here, I could give it a shot. Also, don't forget to retitle the Sig Sauer P226 page so it covers all the P220-series pistols, and/or let me know how to do it should you give me moderator privledges. == Suggestion for movie articles ==

I just had an idea to help add something to the movie articles. How about adding movie poster or DVD/VHS cover images to them, like their articles over at Wikipedia have? Just a thought. Orca1 9904 01:25, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Re:Digg
Cool, You mean vote for it? I have to have an account there to do it, I'll make one.
I just voted for or digged it, it has 7 diggs now.

New Category suggestion
Hey Chris, I was wondering if you could make a new category for movie posters & video covers? I'm considering adding movie posters & case cover images to some of the articles to improve them, but need a category to put those pictures in, since they don't exactly qualify as screenshots. Orca1 9904 23:04, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Cover and Poster Categories
How about we combine them together into "Poster and Cover Art"? make things a bit simpler and avoid mis-categorizing. Orca1 9904 02:10, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Funny
lol, that is funny. I still have more stuff to add before it's complete though. And also, when do you need those revolvers from Sin City identified? Alienqueen11.

Sin City Revolvers
I know some of those revolvers you're uploading, would you like me to tell you what they are here, or do you just want me to edit the screenshots? Alienqueen11.

RE: Sin City
Yeah, I was thinking that too, plus a few of them look like Colt Peacemakers or Single Action Armies.

Call for screenshots
I was wondering if you or Alienqueen111 could help add some screenshots to some of the film & game articles I've made? I'm only limited to images I've been able to scour off the internet, which sadly isn't much. Any help you two could provide would be greatly appreciated. == Ghost's 'mystery pistol' in The Matrix Reloaded ==

From what I've been able to dig up, it looks like Ghost (Andrew Wong)'s mystery pistol in The Matrix Reloaded is a customized SIG P220-series pistol, most likely a P229. Orca1 9904 03:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

BHD M1911A1
Why did you delete the M1911A1 pistol from the Black Hawk Down article? That weapon is indeed used in there by the Delta Force operators. In the scene at the beginning of the film where Blackburn and Eversmann first meet, you can see one of the Deltas draw and fire his M1911A1 on the shooting range. It is also used by Delta snipers Shughart and Gordon in their ill-fated attempt to defend the second crash site. Orca1 9904 20:58, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

The picture you have of the FN SCAR is not correct. You have a picture of a 'Robinson Arms XCR' with an EoTech sight. Here is a picture of an FN SCAR.

Sorry about my absence, my computer ate it hard back in mid-september, and my internet access has been spotty at best (presently using my mom's laptop, hence why I haven't made pages for some of the things I've seen in the interim). I'm trying to get my computer back up, but it's looking to be a lengthy process due to financial troubles. Orca1 9904

About Snatch
There are a bunch of pictures of the S&W 686 being used, but when you click the pics, it says they're Colt Pythons. The pictures aren't that clear, so I can't be too sure, but at least one (the pic with the titles in it and the arm in the picture) is very likely not a Colt Python. The Python has a noticeable "railing" on the top of the barrel. S&Ws don't. The "Boris" picture, though, does look like a Python, although the top of the gun is hard to see.

thanks
is this how this works? I hope so. anyway, thanks for the message. I was thinking about signing up.

RE: SVT-40
It's too big to upload here, but here's an imageshack link:
http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tokarevsvt40fa7.jpg

I paid about $300 for mine after a large number were imported to Canada, they're going for $400-$500 now as they got bought up. We got them because Russia signed a agreement with the Clinton government not to export certain firearms (including the SVT-40) to the US.

I will warn you, it's a real pain to strip, so if you're at all lazy about cleaning don't fire surplus ammo in it. I use Igman and Bell almost exclusively, it's still pretty cheap and I don't feel bad about firing it in some of my rarer rifles.

Shooter
Hey Bunni, can you please upload more images for Shooter when you get the chance, I want to see more great screenshots. I'll greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Re:Platoon
Thanks. I still got plenty to do. It should be done in an hou or two.

By the way, why did you pick Platoon for the front page? Just curious.

And if okay with you, you should add some of the larger articles like Hard Boiled (biggest with 54 guns) or one of my lesser ones like Last Action Hero. Or find articles that convey the different time periods. My Quigley Down Under page shows the 19th century side of the site. Heat should definately deserve a spot on the main page, being such an infamous gun movie. Sorry to advertize my work, I'm just shooting some ideas. Great site, still got many more articles to come. On my to-do list are Rambo II & III, and I got this western film called "Young Guns" to do. I might do The Good, The Bad,  and The Ugly eventually. Weekends will be my time to shine now that I'm back to school. -Gunmaster45

Check out the vandal
Some moron is now vandalizing the Commando Page.  His last comment when i said 'not to delete page contents and replace them with gibberish' was  "It's fun.  Good luck".  But he changes his IP address every time. ((Edit: AlienQueen took care of it.  Thanks! )  I hate these vandals.

Old site + front page
I'm trying to make the front page code function again so that we can see the same stuff we used to see, but no go. Also, someone is still editing the old site, apparently after accessing it via the link on the front page...maybe we should lock it so that source code can still be copied, but no new changes can be made?

Images
I noticed that the images of guns and screenshots on movie pages on this server are a little pixaleted and fuzzy when they were crystal clear on the old server. I'm sorry to bug you about this issue, but I would like to know if this is just a bug that will be worked out (hopefully), thanks. --Alienqueen11 01:47, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

You're the second person to tell me this - but I don't see it at all in my browsers? I've looked on OS X and Windows XP with Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Chrome... 76.174.56.4 02:13, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

:Same here. I've been looking at several articles (mostly my own, admittedly), and I don't notice a difference. It might be the fact that I'm viewing the site on a laptop with a pretty small 13" screen, but I also viewed the site this morning on my desktop at work, which has a 19" monitor, and again...no difference in image quality that I could see.

I think I've found a solution, I found that if I change my Magnification from 100% to 101%, the images on the pages look fine, the page is a little wider, but it looks better. I think the site could have been slightly more magnified on the last server, is this possible?--Alienqueen11 03:25, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Main Page
I added some more pages to the feed on the Main Page. Not just my own either...old favorites like Heat (still our most popular) and The Matrix, as well as various articles from the past few months by myself, Gunmaster, MoviePropMaster, and Orca. My criteria was to add thorough pages that have screencaps for all of the guns listed, and which generally meet high standards. This is, of course, your site, so feel free to judge which pages meet your standards for the Main Page, but I just think we should make sure we're promoting the best pages by our users.

:Hah! I could hardly call it my site - too many great users, including yourself, have made huge contributions of time and energy to call it *mine* - I'm just trying to keep the hardware up to our growing needs and the site backed up daily! :) bunni 03:38, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

::BTW, what's wrong with the article feed? I've tried a couple of little edits that haven't made it work any better. Any idea what bug is causing that? Also, I edited the proportions of things slightly...the "Featured Page" now takes up 65% of the horizontal width, and the "Featured Image" 35%, which seems a little more ideal. -MT2008

Moderating
Hey Bunni, I sorry to bother you about this, but there is a bug with my moderating abilities. I am unable to block users who vandalize or spam pages, there are these two users who inserted gibberish into The Rock page and Commando Talk page, and I'm unable to do anything about them. If this isn't too much trouble for you, can you fix this as soon as possible? Thanks.--Alienqueen11 17:49, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: Admin Rights
I'm sorry, but I'm still getting an error message. Any ideas to what could be going on?--Alienqueen11 03:21, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Here's the Database error message:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "Block::insert". MySQL returned error "1054: Unknown column 'ipb_by_text' in 'field list' (localhost)".

I'll going leave a message on Orca's talk page right now asking if he has the same issue.--Alienqueen11 04:03, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Unregistered Users
I think anonymous users should only be allowed to edit a page if they have an account because any random troll can defile these pages whenever they please and if they register and troll, they are easier to ban. Also, when an anonymous user messages you, you can't respond back. By all means they should be allowed to read and view the pages but they shouldn't be allowed to defile the pages we work so hard on so much whenever. I know they can be blocked but still they do it so much, something should be permenantly done. Does it sound like a good idea? I'm not trying to make things harder for you so if it is too hard to do, dismiss my message. It's just when the Commando page and other pages keep getting trolled it makes me mad.
P.S. What do you think of the new and improved Saving Private Ryan page I spent all day on? -GM45

Re: Which User?
I contacted Orca, and he has the same problem. Go to the Commando talk page, and look at the revision history and it's the first user down, and on The Rock page, there was a user that vandalized the page, but it has since been undone. Also be sure to read Gunmaster45's comment, it sounds like a way to protect the site, but I'm also afraid the site will loose activity if done so. I'll be sure to create a new account Thursday or Friday, I'll let you know the name when I do. Thanks, and good luck.--Alienqueen11 03:47, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

:Personally, I don't agree with the idea of banning anonymous users from editing, for precisely the reason Alienqueen has cited. However, I do think we should probably get some more moderators around here. -MT2008

Okay, it was a bit harsh, but I was just throwing out ideas. In most cases, anonymous users make unprofessional pages, add incorrect info randomly, troll, and other things which wouldn't be missed (But not all. Some of the more knowledgable ones should just sign in with a user name and join the club), yet the main lot of us on the site with user names makes new professional pages and add good pictures everyday. I'm saying if it is harder to edit the site, more of the negative editors are weeded out and more of the dilligent users will sign in. And if a die-hard troll does sign in, he is far easier to ban and prevent future trolling. Obviously my plan is flawed but not a horrible idea. -Gunmaster45

--------------

My 2 cents on the issue. The person who was vandalizing the Commando page was doing it repeatedly from different IP addresses.  IP addresses that changed from minute to minute, so this guy must have been doing it from a computer room at a school/college, or at a workplace with lots of IP addresses.  This anonymous vandal taunted me with the words "Good Luck!" & "It's fun!" when I warned him to stop messing with IMFDB pages.  One has to weigh the consequences, and personally, making it so that certain targeted pages are protected by these individuals, (and have to be edited only by persons who have bothered to make an online account), is a good compromise.  Any other course of action, we can quickly lose control of IMFDB to people whose only desire is to do it harm.  This comment coming from a member (me) who had to UNDO this weirdo's vandalism THREE times in the course of a few hours.  If that had spread to the rest of the site ... I shudder to think what would happen.  The fact that we have MODS who are willing to protect the site from this intentional vandalism is a good thing, and such action keeps members like myself from abandoning the site. I appreciate the quick action taken to protect the page.  Members take a lot of their time to building good pages and it's one thing to lose info due to a hardware issue and it's another entirely to spend all one's time undoing the gibberish from a bunch of infantile internet vandals.  Just something to think about.  MoviePropMaster2008

::I can understand the frustration with these vandals. However, the fact is, most anonymous users are perfectly law-abiding and make useful contributions to the site. The way I look at it (and I say this as a libertarian who believes in personal freedom and responsibility), it's similar to the issue many of us have with gun control laws: A few gangbangers shoot up their "hoods" with AKs, so the liberals feel the need to ban everyone, including law-abiding citizens, from owning AKs. And the liberals might argue, "Well, if we don't ban assault weapons, think of all the criminals and terrorists who are going to use them to out-gun the police and take control of the streets!" But most of us would disagree with that, no? It's the same issue of freedom and responsibility here. I've had some pages I've worked on vandalized, and it's annoying, but it is fairly simple to undo the damage (go to "Page History", select the version that precedes the vandalism, and undo it). I think the biggest issue is the lack of available moderators to ban the vandals as soon as they strike. -MT2008

Nominations for new mods?
The site has a lot of great users who I would be happy to have as additional moderators - however not everyone wants the responsibility. So, rather than foisting administrator status on some users I'd love for you guys to either step up to the plate or nominate other users you trust. Hey, Bunni, I would like to know if you can make MoviePropMaster2008 an adminstrator because a user has been uploading over his images, and I would like to put locks on his images so only he can upload new versions and revert them. Also, sorry if I'm bothering you, but did you ever find out what the bug was? I would really like to have the ability to block people again, because right now it would be very useful.--Alienqueen11 02:16, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to say this but it still refuses to work, but it sounds like you getting close to solving the problem, I'm unable to block Users or IP adresses, but I'm still able to protect and delete pages, I think it says the error is in the function "Block::insert". . Is there a possiblity moving to a new server could fix the problem? (Not that you have to, It's just a thought). ==RE:Top pages==
The page still needs a lot of work though. I'm still working on adding cars and knifes to the Punisher dicussion page for anyone to use, so I can't. Other wise, I would try. Any ideas on how to automate the page so it changes the information on its own? -GM

The Leone Trilogy
I just finished the last of the three Sergio Leone westerns, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I was wondering if their is any way to put them in order on the "next page" options and in order on the movie page instead of alphabetical order. It isn't a big deal but let me know if you can. Also, keep your eyes out for my next projects. I just got Last Man Standing in the mail today and I also planning to do The Whole Nine Yards and The Whole Ten Yards soon. -GM

Empty pages
Anonymous users have been making far too many empty pages and it's kinda getting out of hand. Is there anyway we can stop anonymous users from making pages (before I was thinking too harshly by saying they shouldn't be able to edit the site), now I think it is a little less harsh if we can stop them from making the 20 empty pages a day. Even if this isn't possible, is there any way we can notify them to stop making these empty pages? Gunmaster45 21:11, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Bunni, please do tell...how are we doing as far as server capacity goes? Do you want me (and other admins) to engage in another huge deleting spree of unused images/pages? We did it a while ago, but if it would help, please don't hesitate to ask.

Also, what kind of server upgrade do you need? -MT2008 03:33, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

:Yeah, I admit that many of us (myself included) have been getting WAY out of hand with screencaps. I used to make pages where I might have 10 images for a single gun, which is definitely overdoing it. And since many of our pages are the ones getting used for the Featured Article section, it makes sense. If you want, we can always start enforcing rules against having so many screencaps.

:As far as the new server goes, how much are you going to need? In the forum, we've discussed the possibility of finding advertisers. This site's Main Page has had over 1,000,000 views, and in the last month since we reached that benchmark, we've now had close to 200,000 more. At that rate, we can definitely start shopping around for sponsorship deals, especially in the American gun owning community. It might help with finding money to upgrade servers.

:The idea for the Main Page that you have seems like a decent enough idea, but I just worry that it will take away a great deal of the visual splendor from the site. After all, featured pages do a great job of showing casual viewers what IMFDB is like. An alternative might be to start being a LOT more frugal about what pages we put on. We can limit it only to articles that have, say, no more than 20 guns and no more than 3 images of each. I would be willing to edit some of my pages to fit this standard. -MT2008 04:00, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

::I know what you're saying about the featured page, and that was my intention when I first added featured articles to the front page - but at this point we are receiving enough traffic that it has become a serious strain. I've just updated the front page with a couple examples of what I was talking about using only one screenshot and then linking to the article. We have so many new visitors daily that I think it's important our front page load quickly so they can access the rest of the site - I don't want to discourage new visitors with an unusually long load time as their very first experience with the imfdb. Upgrade Issues

If you notice any upgrade issues, or hit any errors on the site, you can let us know here or email manager at imfdb.org

Known Issues

Issue: MediaWiki no longer allows accented characters in page titles. 1,606 pages that had accented characters in their page titles have been moved to new pages with the Broken\ prefix. Plan: We are working on a script to automatically move these pages to new pages with valid titles.

Issue: Some images are missing. Plan: We are working on a script to automatically pull these images from the backups.

Issue: Full SSL encryption is now enabled. If you were logged in via http your cookie may no longer be valid. Fix: If you see errors related to 'session hijacking' clear all imfdb.org cookies and log in again.

There is a problem with this weapon. The link is not working. The German letter (ü) does not work in the link. --Emto_PL (talk) 08:47, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, this is the same issue as the page titles. There is a script to 'fix' the image titles but I'm not 100% sure of its consequences so I'll try it on the development server first and report back. --bunni (talk) 16:19, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
When will the bug be fixed? Lots of websites are down all the time.--Emto_PL (talk) 11:37, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

"Keep me logged in" doesn't work

Can you try specifically going to the https://www.imfdb.org version of the site? You have to type it in manually in the search bar, you'll know you have it because the you'll see a lock in url bar. For me that keeps me logged in on Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. If you have restrictive cookie settings or a cookie blocker that might also be logging you out. We'll move to a 100% https site for everyone next week. --bunni (talk) 16:25, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
Following your instructions, I typed the address and was redirected to http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page with crossed out lock in the url bar. Then I logged in, checking the box, then closed the tab, opened again the HTTPS address - and was not logged. Sorry, maybe I did something wrong?
If you click the Random page link does it take you to a https version with a lock in the url bar or a http version with a broken lock? For me I don't get a redirect if I manually type https in the url bar and Random page sends me to https with a lock in the url bar. If Random page doesn't send you to https then you may have a 'preferHTTP' cookie that keeps redirecting you to http, you could try clearing cookies in your browser for imfdb. In Firefox if I click the lock there's a dropdown for 'Clear cookies and site data...' --bunni (talk) 17:06, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
As far as I know, I don't use any restrictive cookie settings or a cookie blocker.
When clicking Random page, I get into HTTPS page with lock.

Thank ya

Another Issue

Hello, Bunni. I don't know if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I also have a problem: I updated the Verdun page with new images a week before the website upgrade. These were processed and shown correctly. But now the older images are back on the page.--HighPhigh (talk) 09:51, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

I've had the same issue on other pages. The replaced images (after waiting the usual little while) had successfully updated themselves, but after the site upgrade a couple days later they reverted to their older versions, and are still stuck that way. Alex T Snow (talk) 22:44, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
I think the issue here is that there's a window of a few days before the site upgrade where updated images didn't get their new versions copied to the new server, I'm currently working to verify this. The updated images should still exist on the old server and in the backups. --bunni (talk) 22:53, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
That would make sense to me.
Oh interesting. Can you link me to one of these pages? There may be a maintenance script that I need to run to update these pages. --bunni (talk) 23:08, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
One is on Strike Witches: OVA, second image in the Bofors section.
Possibly the problem is somehow connected with the fact that the last update of the cache was more than a week ago - 3 September 2022?--Greg-Z (talk) 06:52, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Page titles with special characters

Hi, I don't want to sound like I'm rushing you guys as I'm sure it's a headache trying to fix all this, but when it comes to page titles that now have "invalid" characters should we keep waiting for that fix script/etc you mention, or is it okay to rename them to something that works manually? I just don't want to step on any toes or screw up a larger-picture fix by fixing something individually. Alex T Snow (talk) 05:02, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

We're working with someone now to build a script for both the Broken pages and the broken image names that have accents, but that process will probably take 2-3 weeks, in the meantime it's okay to rename them manually, it won't harm anything. --bunni (talk) 16:23, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! :) Alex T Snow (talk) 18:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

New Weapon Category:

It is worth adding these two new categories of weapons.
Category: Anti-aircraft guns, Autocannons
Category: Anti-tank guns, Artillery, Howitzers
On the IMFDB website, we already have a lot of created pages on this subject. An example of AA weapon. 2cm FlaK 38 and AT weapon 5 cm Pak 38. What do you think ? Complete all pages in one of these two categories. --Emto_PL (talk) 16:13, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Visual Editing?

Would it be possible to make use of the Visual Editor that's available for WYSIWYG editing, as it's more developed and intuitive for most contributors who may not be versed in the MediaWiki markup?

Also, there are a few extensions and features that I'd like to recommend that would improve the search functionality of the IMFDB, which I am familiar with (as I am project leader and tech support over at the Battlestar Wiki). Perhaps they could be deployed as well? Happy to discuss further. -- Joe Beaudoin (talk) 16:29, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
