An abandoned Vickers machine gun is seen on the Western front in 1917.
The sub-machine guns used by Biggles and companions in the First World War scenes is the (anachronistic) Lanchester Machine Carbine. This weapon, a copy of the Bergmann MP-18/MP-28, was produced in small numbers during the early part of World War II in Britain but was rapidly replaced by the far cheaper STEN gun.

The few thousand that were manufactured went to the Royal Navy and were still in service well into the ninteen sixties.

In reality the only sub-machine gun used during the First World War was the Bergmann MP-18, with the odd "snail drum" magazine projecting from the left side; the Italian FIAT-Villar Perosa Mod 15 was used as a light machine gun, despite firing a pistol round.
