Though commonly claimed as being designed and manufactured by Norinco Group, Chinese government-affiliated media have primarily indicated that the weapon is designed by the No. 208 Research Institute, a subsidiary of the China South Industries Group (CSGC), and was primarily manufactured by CSGC subsidiaries.
An export version of the QSZ-92, the NP42, is exported by the export company Norinco (not to be confused with Norinco Group), and branded as a "Norinco" product.
