The size of the gun and the cylinder can clearly be seen in closeup at the pool scene. There are enough good shots of the size of the bore of that gun to see that it is a 44 Magnum model 29. This description should be changed.

I don't believe the 1911 the US Marshall used was a Springfield. I recall seeing vertical slide serrations, not slanted. To me the pistol looked like a basic Colt Government model with just a couple of tweaks to it, like some larger sights. We will see shortly as Blackhat will be out on Blu Ray in a couple weeks. Jury is still out on this one though. - zenner22

I downloaded the movie and I'm finding there is no real good shot of that 1911. My original guess is wrong though, there are slanted serrations, no front serrations, and a beaver tail grip safety so it's not an old school Colt like I originally thought. The sights aren't the Novak style that come on Springfields. However in one angled shot it does look like the Springfield logo behind the ejection port. The original poster is probably close, it does appear to be a Springfield of some kind.--Zenner22 (talk) 09:52, 5 May 2015 (EDT) zenner22

Watched the blu ray, more details are visible. Got to hand it to the original poster who identified this as a Springfield Armory, he is spot on. No idea how it was possible to tell without slo-mo but what a great catch! From what I saw - a Springfield Armory 1911, slanted serrations, Springfield logo behind the ejection port (few models have this), the words Springfield Armory underneath the ejection port. No front serrations. Aftermarket sights. Beavertail grip safety. The hammer did not look to be typical Springfield issue but I could be wrong. Not a parkerized finish, you can see some reflection of the gun in some shots. Absolutely no idea what model it is, very well could be a custom carry or a custom of some kind. Would love to know the details. Perhaps the original poster has some inside info...? --Zenner22 (talk) 22:00, 12 May 2015 (EDT)

While not a Dan Wesson for certain, I'm guessing it may be a Llama 357 or 44. These were Spanish revolvers around in the 70s and 80s that had a vent rib and short barrel lug, S&W like. Not saying it is a Llama for sure, but I can't think right now of anything else that fits the description. As far as signing, I forgot I had to manually do that! - Looks too big to be a K-Frame S&W 66. You can also tell by the barrel and the subtle difference in the shape of the ejector shroud (compared to a 2.5" Model 66 barrel.) that it is probably an N-Frame 629 with 3" barrel in .44 Magnum. This makes sense if Belushi's character gives Arnie a full-sized Model 29. He probably really liked the "big" Magnums! - --sidspappy 20:16, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
::I think you're on to something there!!!! :) Something to look into! I will try to find a 629 snubbie to photograph for comparison! THANKS! MoviePropMaster2008 01:52, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I also believe it is a Smith & Wesson model 629 with a three inch barrel. Another possibility is the .44 Special N frame M624. However, I cannot see the typical barrel taper of the M624 in the pictures and the cylinder also seems to fill the frame almost completely. The model 624 features a slightly shorter cylinder, as the .44 Special rounds are shorter in length as well.
I took this screencap only to show the muzzle. Looks like a .357 to me not a .44. -Predator20 17:47, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
:After comparing the 66 to the 629, I agree with Predator. This is definitely a model 66. 1) the muzzle is definitely that of a .357 revolver. 2) the barrel on Belushi's gun looks a bit too long to be a 629, but it looks EXACTLY like a model 66. The first shot is a dead giveaway. -Gunman69 18:05, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

I would agree that in many of the shots it looks like a 629 with a 3inch barrel, they existed at the time, and in the first shots the barrel and the cylinder appear too large for a .357, the gun itself is too large as well. Belushi has large hands but that gun seems to dwarf them. In the final picture I could see how that is a .357, but the first shots are without a doubt a .44 RedJedRevolver 18:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

While in some of the shots the gun seems large. I don't think people realize that k-frames like the Model 66 or 19 are full size guns. A snub-nose Model 66 or 19 is not the same size as a j-frame Model 36. Here is a pic below for comparison. Now if the gun Belushi is using is an n-frame, I think it would be a Model 27 - .357 with a stainless finish. --Predator20 20:16, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

We understand perfectly, but the barrel size is just too large, I have rather large hands myself and I own a full size revolver, and my hands make that gun seem diminutive. My point is not that I think you are wrong with the muzzle shots, but the others that gun is too large.RedJedRevolver

I don't think Ridžić used the model 66. He definitely used a .44 Mag. He most likely used the S&W 629 3" barrel w/ different grips. He didnt use a .357 ErikSantiago

Belushi used a .357 Model 66 snub nose in the movie. He did not use a .44. For a good example, look at the size of the cylinder when he hands Schwarzenegger a real .44 Magnum in the car - it's huge! Definitely bigger than the gun Belushi uses. I think the confusion stems from one of the promotional materials included in the dvd where Belushi pulls out his .357 and calls it the "Magnum .44" for the interview in order to pump up the movie. It's a Model 66 .357. The page needs to be changed.

Model 64 or 60?
* Det. Sgt. Gallagher (Richard Bright) carries what looks like a S&W Model 10 snubnose, except in Stainless steel, which would make it the S&W Model 64.
:The cylinder looks like it only holds five shots, meaning it would be the Model 60 snub. - Gunmaster45
::It may be, but it also looks like a 6 shot to me. It's always hard since actors have different sized hands and this looks larger than a Model 60 to me. I will scroll through the film again and scan for better pics of the cylinder. -MoviePropMaster2008 04:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
:I think its a Model 64. On a Model 60, when looking at the gun from the right side, you cannot see the ejector rod, but on a Model 64, you can. Notice how can most definitely see the ejector rod on Gallagher's gun. -Gunman69 07:34, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Actually, looking at it now, while you can see the ejector rod, the barrel on Gallagher's gun is a little too long to be a model 64. ===Inaccuracies regarding WW2 uniforms and conduct===
* Despite being a fantastical comedy / farce, the uniforms of the major dictators was unusual in that the color red was essentially 'de-saturated' from their clothing. Tojo's brown uniform was grey, and his red collar tabs were also grey. Hitler's Mustard brown coat also seem missing the red as well as the NSDAP arm band. Mussolini's arm patch would have red stripes, but it has grey ones. This 'could' have been an intentional choice to show that they are 'ghosts' of the past, but it is worth mentioning. As for the 'guards' or adjutants, German Heer or SS officers don't hold a posture like U.S. Marines, when at a meeting. When not 'at arms' (i.e. not wearing their belts and pistols or other military weapons) they would have their hats off and arms to the side.

He comments that he doesn't like ambidextrous safeties because they are too easy to switch to "fire" on accident. The revolver would negate this.GaBoy45 01:19, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
The pistols under the S&W 1911 heading are not a 5" 1911's. If you look at the bottom of the slide ahead of the dust cover compared the the pic of the 5", it is clearly a Commander length pistol. User:Captain America
Well they are SW1911. So if you have a picture of a SW1911 Commander feel free to post it. All imfdb has right now is pictures of the full length SW1911's. --Jcordell 15:20, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
If the pistol Selleck uses as Jesse Stone is a S&W 1911, it is the S&W Gunsite version of this pistol. The Gunsite raven is clearly shown on the right side of the slide behind the rear slide serrations. The pistol also sports the Gunsite raven logo on the grips. The Gunsite pistol is a slightly customized version of the SC pictured.

The engraved nickel 1911a1 doesn't need the last line implying a different frame from the stock gun. The Colts with the large roll mark saying MKIV Series 80 had the arched mainspring housing and short trigger exactly as this pistol appears. This is how the full size Colts were made in the 80s.

The CURRENT Colt Series 80s have the flat mainspring housing and the long trigger, I think that is where the confusion is coming from.

The pistol in the picture does not appear to be modified in any way (except for the engraving of course.) The last line in the description that says "Though the slide is marked "MK IV Series 80", it appears to have been a standard M1911A1 frame" should be deleted. This is a standard Colt Government Model made in the 1980s.

Notice the difference between the cylinders. The forcing cone is very visible on the Model 27. The cylinder is shorter on the Model 27 and the barrel has a distinct taper on the 27. It does appear that Gibson is using a Model 27 when he is shooting up into the Asian gang's vehicle but it's a Model 29 at the beginning of the movie. Now it could be argued that he's using a Model 28 since the 28 does have the plain top strap like the Model 29. But the Modell 28 is just a plain jane version of the Model 27 with a matte blue finish. All the other previously described features still apply. The revolver used by Porter (at least in the beginning) has a bright blue glossy finish. Then you and I are on the same sheet of music. Why don't you create another listing for the Model 27 for the sequence when Porter is shooting it out with the Asians? You have a category for the Model 29 in which there are screencaps of the Model 29 being used. You should go ahead and make another category or heading showing the Model 27/28 being used. == Background Check at pawn shop ==

this movie is loosely based on a book set in 1967, before the Gun Control Act of 1968. Therefore there is no background check and very little if any paperwork. Also there are some "shady" pawn shops that will sell a firearm with no paperwork because they know the weapon is hot or has a history. However this leads to the idea that the Beretta 92FS Val uses can't be used then since it wasn't manufactured at that time. He would be using a Beretta 951.

- Uh, there are several guns in this film that are newer than 1967. Whatever the book might say, this page is about the film, which clearly set in contemporary 1999. Your other explanation regarding a 'shady' pawn shop explains that point well enough by itself. StanTheMan 00:55, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

:According to the commentary on the DVD the film was set essentially inside its own world with no clear date or location. The filmmakers intended the setting to have a 70s feel to it without explicitly placing it in the 70s, and were going for a New York style setting despite filming in Chicago with little attempt to disguise the fact. All the guns featured in the film, with a few exceptions, were available in the 70s or the first couple years of the 80s. Overall it is better not to sweat the small details and just enjoy the film (which is one of my personal favorites). -Anonymous
I don't believe the pillow is to muffle the shot, but more to keep from getting splattered with blood and brains. I've done something similar when putting down hogs at my uncles farm, we'd throw a burlap bag over it before shooting it to keep from getting blood on our clothes.
Comments
I think this article has improved greatly following the removal of many of the snarky comments about gun handling mistakes in the film. Just in case anyone was planning to replace them I though I'd post a statement by MoviePropMaster concerning this issue:

:I recently had the unpleasant experience of having some of the performers being insulted in some of our movie pages see what some of the IMFDB members write. there are some pretty condescending remarks regarding horrible grips, gun stance, bad gun discipline and blinking while shooting. I'm trying to promote the website and it's embarrassing to see actors getting insulted for pretty trivial reasons. What are your thoughts regarding this?

:See below:

:I'm asking all members to stop with the sarcastic comments in the screencap descriptions. Too many members feel it's funny to be extremely sarcastic about actor's shooting stance, their blinking, their pistol grips. Only if it's so over the top as for the average person to notice, then don't keep on harping on it. Most actors are given only a bare amount of time to train, if at all. Many times the editor picks the worst take for pistol grip, but best take for other reasons like acting. Also much of the blame falls on the director. Some directors don't want to be bothered trying to train the actors and don't allow us armorers to even give them more training than the minimum safety training. People in the industry check out this website, and some think we're a bunch of obnoxious kids. I am not happy when people in 'the biz' look at the site and scoff at the snarky remarks. Some of them are the actual actors being insulted. We can always put in criticism, but IMFDB members going forward going to criticize a film, should try to do so in a scholarly manner or not at all. Thanks for your cooperation MoviePropMaster2008 05:52, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
:::Who did you ban?

Back to the revolver controversy.....
I noticed while looking around that you guys were uncertain about which Smiths were used in the movie. First of all, a Model 27/28 was definitely used in a handful of shots, as you can clearly see the barrel taper. Second, judging by cylinder size, I think that every instance of a Smith without a taper (and those fancy wood finger groove grips) is a Model 19, not a Model 29. The gun just looks a bit to small to be an N Frame in the non-tapered pictures.

As far as the .44 diameter bore argument goes, I've got a Model 19 here and I can tell you, in certain light, the curve on the tip of the bore casts a shadow, making the bore look bigger than it is, so identifying the bore size on a blued Smith is a little tricky and can't really prove anything. I don't mean to be rude, just giving my two cents worth. Yournamehere 22:23, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Who doesn't love a good controversy? I have to disagree with you. I don't believe it's a Model 19. The ejector rod housing on the N frame is heavier and thicker than the housing on the K frame Model 19. Of course that's just my opinion. However it's always fun to debate with another fan of revolvers. --Jcordell 22:45, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I tell you what, I just took another look at it and the gun has a hammer spur seen on N frames, so it's more than likely a Model 25 or 29. Yournamehere 05:15, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
There was an article in Gun World magazine in the 90s called Shoot for Effect by John Fasano. Mr. Fasano is/was a screenwriter (Another 48 Hrs is mentioned in the article) as well as writing articles for gun magazines. This article was on Stembridge Gun Rentals and had a few pictures of the prop guns used in popular movies, for example - Pacino's Colt Officer's ACP in Heat, John Wayne's Colt and Winchester from Stagecoach as well as Mel Gibson's S&W Model 29 used in Payback. It's a closeup left side shot of the gun. The article is found in a downloadable pdf file on the net. Not sure if I'm allowed to post links on this site or not, or I would.
