Airsoft 1911
Are you absolutely sure the airsoft gun wasn't based on the gun in the game?-protoAuthor
:What are you talking about? Spartan198 04:10, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
::You say the custom 1911 was based on an airsoft gun. Are you sure it wasn't the other way around?-protoAuthor
::I also agree that the gun isn't based off the one in the pic for that weapon. Aside from it being an airsoft gun, it is a compact version of a 1911 when Big Boss's 1911 was a fullsize. Also, the slide serrations are slanted wheras the ones on big boss's weapon were vertical like those on the original 1911. Neither one has anything to do with the other, I think the image should be removed.

the 'source' for the statement 'Big Boss's gun is based off a custom airsoft' is http://crimsonsguns.tripod.com/gameguns.html

However, I view this with a huge degree of skepticism. For starters, as mentioned, the barrel/slide seems to be longer on Big Boss's gun. But even if it is based on an airsoft gun, the airsoft gun itself is based on a standard real-world 1911 with real world features. So it's just one step removed from raw, hands on research. But then again, I don't think most game companies actually buy real versions of the guns they are modeling, they just look around for photos of them. It's like saying 'the model for the gun in this game isn't based on a REAL M-16, it's based on pictures of an M-16'

That 'source' mentions that the gun was produced by Sheriff Co. Given that Sheriff is mentioned in the MGS3 credits it's actually quite likely that it was in fact modeled off an airsoft gun. However, the one in the picture is obviously not the one in the game.--Lynx 19:44, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Mark 23 Mod 1?
According to the Metal Gear Wiki, the gun they used as a reference in MGS4 is actually an experimental "Phase 2" model that is currently undergoing testing by the US Navy.

No, actually it says that the SOCOM presented in MGS1, MGS2 and MGS4 is in fact the Phase II model handgun submitted for trials in the USSOCOM Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OHWS) competition around the later part of 1991, and not the actual production model of the Mk.23 Mod 0.
::I wrote that -- the differences were the LAM, front serrations on the slide, markings, and the hammer looked different too.
:I would agree that a game with this many weapons would be much better with more relevant screencaps, especially ones without watermarks. More relevant information about the guns themselves would also be welcome.

Why the strange biases towards certain weapons and calibers in this game?
It seems odd to me why the weapon/caliber selection is so odd in this game. Metal Gear Solid has been one of the best game series to prominently display the real names of every gun in the game, but I have to wonder if some of those companies Kojima got permission from paid him to underplay the abilities of other guns in this game.

For the calibers, it seems mighty odd that the Glock 18c is the only 9x19mm pistol in the entire game. Not even the rebels or militia use older 9x19mm pistols, which is very odd because you'd think that of the vast majority of older pistols that escaped the worldwide mandatory ID lock systems that is mentioned in the game's backstory would be 9x19mm pistols. Not even something like a Beretta M9 is used by the PMC troopers, even though it would be a nice free choice to have in Metal Gear Online.

The game also strangely features 7.62x51mm Battle Rifles where they aren't the most appropriate, such as how the PMCs use the FN SCAR-H even in the confines of urban ruins (as in Act 1) or an intact city (as in Act 3). Only the South American countryside in Act 2 would be an appropriate location for those Battle Rifles in the hands of general troopers. You'd think that Kojima with his weaponry knowledge would give them assault rifles/PDWs/shotguns instead while in urban operations, but that's somehow not the case.

Did H&K and FN pay Kojima to include (and in turn, advertise) their products a great deal in this highly-anticipated and wildly popular game? FN has the Five-SeveN, the P90, the SCAR-H, and the FAL all in the game, while H&K has the SOCOM pistol, the MP5SD2, the XM8, the G3A3, and the HK21E. Colt products and their users by contrast don't get that kind of exposure--Colt M4s are rare, and Colt M16s are completely non-existent in this game. I also think it's telling that the FN P90 has its 50 round magazine, a combat sight, a flashlight and a suppressor, but its competitor, the H&K MP7 has only a red dot sight and is stuck with its 20 round magazine (not its upgraded 40 round magazine) according to this game just can't compete.

Contrary to what some posters on this wiki have said elsewhere, I don't believe this game is biased towards the latest and greatest weapons in general, as several weapons here such as the Vz. 83, the FN FAL carbine, the G3A3, the MAC-10, the Mosin Nagant, the PKM, the RPG-7 and the SVD Dragonuv are quite old.

Kojima definitely spent some time doing weapons research for this game, but did he ever come out with a reason as to why the game chose such odd additions to its arsenal? His personal favourite gun is the Barret M82, something not suited for general combat, so maybe he himself doesn't know as much as the ingame info might imply. --Mazryonh 00:50, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I think the same arguments could be said about any of the Tom Clancy games like Rainbow Six Vegas and it's whoring worth of H&K weaponry Excalibur01

It would seem to me that if HK and FN paid Kojima off to showcase (or "whore out", whichever you reading this prefers) their tech, weapons like the XM8 and SCAR-H wouldn't be seemingly outclassed by the M4. You can kit the M4 out with anything and everything, while the SCAR-H lacks a suppressor and grenade launcher (severely hindering its flexibility) and the only thing the XM8 gets is the grenade launcher. Heck, the M4 is pretty much a CQB, grenadier, and designated marksman carbine all in one package (and I typically use it as such, often foregoing the actual sniper rifles in the game in long range combat for the M4 equipped with an ACOG). If HK or FN had paid him off, it would seem logical for the M4 to be totally outclassed in-game by both the XM8 and SCAR-H. Not only those points, but the M4 and the 1911s (I say 1911s collectively because cutscenes seem to automatically replace every non-1911 pistol in your inventory with the Operator) are implied to be Snake's signature weapons this time around. If he were paid off, why aren't the Mark 23 and XM8 or Five-Seven and SCAR-H his signature weapons? Also where's the PSG1, the so-called "greatest sniper rifle in the world" (or so HK says)? And I also feel the urge to point out that the HK21E has 0 modifications for it as well as a ridiculously slow ROF, which makes the M60E4 clearly superior to it. Now, I'm not exactly defending either company here, but it just seems to me that if they had paid Kojima off, the biases pointed out here would be far more extreme. As it stands, I just think Kojima wanted the weapons he likes the most to be the ones players used the most. Regarding the "old" weapons in the game, they may have seen a few years, yes, but FALs, G3s, Dragunovs, PKs, and above all the RPG-7 are so ubiquitous today that we'll be seeing them on modern battlefields, especially ones in the Middle East, for decades to come. Spartan198 08:11, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

:Actually, now that I've spent some time thinking about it, the M4 and M1911 in MGS4 may not actually be Colt products at all. After all, didn't a court decision in real life rule that an M4 is a type of firearm and not a Colt trademark at all? It's kind of like how an "M1911-style pistol" is also a type of pistol, not a Colt trademark which is why there are dozens if not hundreds of kinds of "M1911-style pistols" for sale on the general market today. I wonder if Kojima asked Colt to use their trademarks and got rebuffed for whatever reason, which might have caused him to withdraw the M4s from the PMCs and substitute FN SCAR-Hs until someone told him he could just call it an M4 (though not a Colt M4) and avoid copyright infringement.

:On the issue of customizability, I think the M4's customizability compared to, for instance, the XM8 and FN SCAR-H is a bit of laziness on the part of Kojima. I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't just stick the M14 EBR's suppressor model on the end of the FN SCAR-H or G3A3 and turn those two into suppressed firearms, for instance. They could have also stuck the M4's suppressor model onto the AK-101 or XM8 as well (in my opinion the XM8's integral red dot sight in MGS4 is easier to use than the M4's, being a great deal less claustrophobic than the M4's version). Something like the FN EGLM would have been nice on the SCAR-H (or the SCAR-L had they bothered to give the PMCs assault rifles in urban areas) but unlike the M320 or GP-30, would only have gone on one weapon (unless the SCAR-L was included) and possibly not have been good on the cost-benefit analysis. But my point, that the customizability of many of the weapon systems (where are the PSO-1 scopes for the AN-94 and AK-102, for instance?) is more an artifact of the design decision than the reality of the weapons in question. Of course, even with the full "real-life" customizability, the M4 would still be the only one capable of carrying an underslung shotgun, which I think is unique enough (though I bet the XM8 could have gotten one had it been adopted, and I'm sure one will be designed for the FN SCAR models if it proves itself in the field enough).

:Oh, and one of the reasons why you can snipe with the M4 is because the game over-emphasizes headshots and doesn't implement ballistic physics for bullets. If it did, bullet drop would come into play (especially since the M4's short barrel means that less velocity and energy is imparted to the bullet, resulting in less effective range), moreso with the M4 than the FN SCAR-H or M14 EBR for instance. I think the game would have been more fun if helmets were stronger (for instance, 5 helmet hits from most pistol weapons to kill, 3 helmet hits from 5.56mm weapons to kill someone, or 2 7.62x51mm/PDW ammunition hits, or 1 9x39mm/shotgun slug hit), forcing the player to aim for the exposed face or neck to guarantee a one-hit headshot kill).

:I only mentioned those weapons as "old" so as to defuse claims that Kojima was only focussed on the "latest and greatest."

:It would have been nice if a PSG-1 and FAMAS (both weapons used in MGS1) showed up in the game for old time's sake, but that was not to be. Still, that doesn't resolve the question of why HK's PDW (the MP7A1) is so inferior to FN's PDW (the P90) in this game. Even the wikipedia image of the MP7A1 shows it with a suppressor and 40 round magazine, along with custom optics. --Mazryonh 18:25, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Why is it that the "Video Game appearances" tables have a column named "Passwords"? I don't think it's for passwords to unlock them, because to my knowledge very few video games actually have a password system to unlock weapons. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a "Notes" after the "Mods" section where certain pertinent but miscellaneous information can be written, such as what copyright-infringement-avoiding name it goes under in the game, or whether it is chambered in a non-standard caliber?

I'd like this cleared up. ==Colt Government Model Section==
With regard to the following sentence:

"Aside from Colt selling the M1911A1 to the US military, the gun was also sold under the name "Colt Government Model" to the civilian market, and called the "Pre-Series 70" guns today."

First, the Colt Government Model was introduced in 1912, and as such, it was originally in the M1911 configuration. When the U.S. Military switched to the M1911A1 configuration in the mid 1920s, Colt began manufacturing their Government Models in the M1911A1 configuration as well. So early Government Models parallel the military's M1911 configuration, while later Government Models (after the mid 1920s) parallel the military's M1911A1 configuration. Additionally, not only pre-Series 70 guns are Government Models. Series 70 and Series 80 guns are both Government Models. In fact, Colt still makes the Government Model to this day in various configurations.

With regard to the following sentence:

"For IMFDB purposes, this can also be referred to as an M1911A1. In this manner, there is no need to list film, television, anime, video games in this section."

It is sloppy to refer to a Colt Government Model as an M1911A1. "M1911A1" is the U.S. Military designation for a particular type of gun, and most of them were not even made by Colt (Remington Rand [the typewriter company] made most of them). I can see referring to a gun as an "M1911 type" or "M1911A1 type" if the manufacturer can't be determined, but when you simply type "M1911" or "M1911A1" you are referring to a U.S. Military contract pistol.

On top of that, the pictured gun in the Colt Government Model section is not even a "Pre-Series 70", it is a pre-enhanced Series 80 Government Model.
:So it's like how we don't call it the Beretta M9, we call it the Beretta 92FS. -Gunman69 03:52, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

::With the M9 vs. 92FS situation, it is next to impossible to tell the difference between the two onscreen, unless there is a closeup allowing one to read the markings. In such cases I would say, if a civilian character is using the gun, it is probably intended to be a 92F or 92FS. If a military character is using it, it is probably intended to be an M9, regardless of what the actual prop is. I would assume that most—if not all—movie and TV props are actually 92Fs or 92FSs, because I don't believe that actual M9s have ever been made available for civilian sale.

::With the M1911 or M1911A1 vs. the Colt Government Model (or other brands of 1911-type guns), it is usually possible to tell the difference onscreen without being able to read the markings. For example, the Colt Government Model does not have a lanyard loop. Most M1911A1s were parkerized, while no Government Models were parkerized. When dealing with more modern Government Models, there are even more differences. For example, starting in 1950, Government Models started coming with a full-shelf thumb safety; while all M1911[A1]s had partial-shelf thumb safeties. Also at this time, Government Models started being given a finish with polished flats and matte radiuses, while blued and Du-Lite (similar to bluing in appearance) M1911A1s had polished radiuses and brushed flats or entirely polished (depending on the manufacturer and/or time of manufacture); and of course the more common parkerized M1911A1s were simply all matte.

::Additionally, the newer Government Models as mentioned above have narrow hammers with polished sides left "in the white", and polished chamber hoods also left "in the white". Many M1911A1s had wide-spur hammers, and the ones that had narrow hammers were fully finished (no polished "in the white" sides) and they all had fully blued barrels, including the otherwise parkerized ones (no polished "in the white" chamber hoods).

::Most of the Government Models you see onscreen from the early 70s to the mid-to-late '80s were actually 9mm versions, though they were usually representing a "forty-five" onscreen. This had to do with reliable functioning with readily available 9mm blanks. Colt introduced the 9mm version of the Government Model when they introduced the Series 70 in the early 1970s, and the 9mm version of the CGM had a lowered ejection port (while the .45 ACP version still had the standard military style ejection port). With the introduction of the Series 80 Government Model in 1983, the .45 ACP version also got a lowered ejection port. No M1911[A1] had a lowered ejection port.

::I'll give an example. In the show Magnum, P.I., his gun is blued with polished flats and matte radiuses; polished "in the white" chamber hood and hammer sides, and a lowered ejection port. It is clear from looking that the gun is a Series 70 Colt Government Model chambered for 9mm (though it was always addressed as a "forty-five" in the show's dialogue); and is definitely not an M1911A1. Recently the gun came up for auction and is now in the NRA's National Firearms Museum, and it has been confirmed that that is exactly what the main prop gun was (serial # 70L33101 to be exact).
Who wrote this? The historical paragraph (on the background of the M1911) implies that the M1911 was replaced by the U.S. Military AFTER Operation Desert Storm (1991) which is not true. The Beretta M92 (M9) was already approved and adopted by 1985.
The M in the page title
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the M in the page title incorrect? These are Colt 1911s (or 1911a1s, etc.), not Colt M1911s, unless referred to by US military nomenclature, just the same way that a Beretta 92f is an M9 only to the US Army and a SIG Sauer P228 is an M11 only in USAF terms. Just because it's the model of 1911 doesn't make it an M1911, any more than a '67 Shelby GT500 is an M67 Shelby GT500.YourMessageHere 08:09, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
::No. The Colt pistol was formally adopted by the Army on March 29, 1911, thus gaining its designation, M1911 (Model of 1911). Only examples or prototypes prior to the year 1911 would NOT have the M designation (which is extremely rare). Between the years of 1907 and 1910 the Colt pistol was constantly being modified and re-designed to win the Army's trials for adoption of a new handgun. The gun was only mass produced AFTER winning the Army's pistol trials. The Beretta 92FS was already famous world wide and was commercially available as the 92F/FS for YEARS before the Army adopted it. Every 1911 design came AFTER the M1911 (aka Model of 1911) so it is the correct nomenclature. MoviePropMaster2008 07:20, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Using "1911" to refer to any and all pistols based on the M1911 design has only been popular for about fifteen years. Prior to that, the vast majority of such pistols were Colts, and were usually called "Colt .45s", even if they were pistols made by wartime contractors like Remington Rand. Those commercial guns that weren't made by Colt, as made by Vega, Randall, Federal Ordnance, Essex, etc., were called "clones", as they were generally close copies of the Colt. When makers started adding previously "custom" features to production-line guns, and branching into areas that Colt hadn't, a new name was needed, and "1911" became popular. The problem that I have with the various names on the site is the mixing of military and commercial designations; a gun cannot be a "M1911A1 Government Model", as M1911A1 is a military designation, and Government Model is what Colt has always called the civilian version of the "M" military pistols. Colt has made M1911s (1912-circa 1924), M1911A1s (circa 1926-1945), and Government Models (1912-date), but you can't mix or combine those names without confusing the issue.
I thought I would ask permission before making this change considering how important this article is: in the specifications category the caliber is listed solely as .45 ACP. I was wondering whether or not that should be changed to include .380 ACP, .38 Super, 9mm, and .40 S&W?
:-Anonymous

No, since the ORIGINAL Colt M1911 is .45 ACP Caliber, it should stay like that, since copies of the M1911 maybe have different calibers those should be put on the "copy" section

Colt introduced (announced) the M1991A1 in 1991 as a sort of economy version of the Government Model, resembling the military M1911A1, and with the serial numbers picking up where the military gun left off after WWII. The gun was made in that form until about 2003, at which time the finish was changed to polished blue rather than matte blue, and the black rubber grips replaced with checkered wood.
:I heard a guy explain on youtube that 1991 got "extra safety feature" which blocked firing pin movement entirely when trigger was not pressed; allegedly this modification appeared after a incident involving police officer accidentally killing suspect while snapping him with the gun. However, this modification somehow managed to eject firing pin from the slide during decocking so only few people liked it --Cover72 21:59, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Police service pistols
Before the 90s were American Police ever issued the M1911, or were they're only given to the FBI and SWAT team?

- Some regular state/county/municipal departments might have used a 1911 as a standard duty-weapon before semiautos came into heavy use following the eighties, but I imagine that's a very low number. I certainly don't know of any specific departments myself offhand. Not that many departments use 'em much today. As a 1911 generally was considered a large pistol with a fairly powerful round it wasn't considered easy to use and handle by regular officers. Same general reason why departments in older times stuck with .38s over .357s - The .357 was generally considered too powerful for standard-duty officers. As such, most police departments used 9mms when they first went to automatics in the eighties as there were few semiauto calibers with lower recoil impulse and power at the time than .45ACP.

Some other police units might have used 1911s when it suited them - Homicide detectives in our county's police dept. carried 1911 type pistols, though I don't think that was the county's standard sidearm for uniformed officers. StanTheMan 02:04, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

:There's another reason, besides caliber, that the 1911 wouldn't have been too popular in the old days - it's a single-action. Before DA-only became more acceptable (i.e. Glocks), most LE departments preferred handguns that were SA/DA. Almost all police revolvers used prior to the 1980s, like the S&W Model 15 and 19, or the Colt Python, were single- or double-action. This bias continued into the 1980s when a lot of departments started adopting the Beretta 92F and the 3rd Generation Smith & Wesson autos. Now that Glocks have been around long enough, DA-only is finally becoming the standard. But SA-only is pretty much a no-go to any LE agency, and that's the way it was even before the 1980s. -MT2008 02:30, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Isn't Glocks SA-only? The firing pin is cocked by cambering a round?

Would a Smith and Wesson Model 39 or 639 or Colt Commander be more acceptable for police use back then?

- To MT, that's a good point as well. SA weapons do require a lot of training and familiarity to operate effectively and safely, and as such, again, weren't considered practical for regular police officers either. Very good to point out. If I'm not mistaken, that's one of the main reasons why the 1911 fell out of favor in the Armed Forces as well - the fact they required extensive training and familiarity to use and carry safely. DA weapons are easier to train and operate with. Very true.

As for the Glock question, no, Glocks are actually DA only.

As for actions - In a Single-Action (SA) firearm, the hammer must be manually cocked to a firing position prior to pulling the trigger. Just like revolvers of the old west. Double action firearms will both cock and release the hammer when the trigger is pulled. SA/DA firearms use double-action by default, but feature an externally accessible hammer to allow single-action style firing (by cocking the hammer back and then pulling the trigger). Modern revolvers are perhaps the simplest examples of this.

DAO (Double-Action-Only) firearms only fire by double-action as they don't have an accessible hammer for single-action cocking. Such as Glock and various other semiauto pistols.

So if you have empty casing in the chamber, an pull the trigger several times, you would hear a loud click every time because the firing pin would be cocked every time? That's what happens in a DAO gun. If not, it's a SAO.

And on the last question, yes the Smith 39/59 pistols were used by police departments back then. Illinois State Police used the 59 back in the 60s/70s if I remember my Jane's Gun Recognition book correctly. StanTheMan 05:07, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Familiarity, accuracy, ease of getting parts, feel, simplicity (yes I know there are designs that are simpler, but for what this pistol is, it is simple), many different makes and models of the 1911, modularity, traditionalism. There are many makes and models of the 1911 style that have the same features as many modern "wonder guns". Want more ammo? Get a Para Ord P14, ditto for DA, and DA/SA. Want a 9mm/ 10mm/ etc? there are many types of 1911 platform pistols ranging from .22lr to .44 Magnum. A quote I heard about the 1911 a few years ago is "It's like a '32 Ford Hotrod, its cheap, reliable, powerful, fun, and is easy to make it your own. Just don't think you'll get much mileage out of a tank of gas." Now tell me can you put custom grips, barrels, sights, slides, frames, triggers, hammers, finishes, safeties, slide releases magazines, etc etc etc on a Glock, XD, SIG, Beretta, etc? ==Video game appearances of this pistol series==

Oh, and someone needs to include a note saying that "mods" is short for "modifications/customizations for the weapon," not "downloadable modifications to the game itself."--Mazryonh 06:20, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
:I agree. Frankly I think both the "Mods" and "Passwords" sections can go, since the latter is pointless and the former's purpose can be adequately served by "Notes". --MattyDienhoff 15:17, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Colt Government Model Section

==Police service pistols==

Versus modern pistols
One thing I've noticed about this pistol is that almost everyone loves it, as though it were the best, most versatile handgun ever made. But really, what makes this thing, almost 100 years old now, any better than any modern pistols? Really, modern pistols can fire the same rounds, bigger clips, better design, picatinny rails, etc.--Zblayde 21:54, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Six to Seven pistols can be obtained including a .357 magnum possibly a Colt Python.

Currently there is seven pistols (including magnum type weapons), these include the Beretta 92FS, H&K USP, SIG P226, Beretta M93R, S&W M29, Desert Eagle, S&W M500. There are several secret weapons that can be obtained as well. According to a recent Gamepro article, these weapons range from new to old tech. It is unknown how many there are.

Also, several shotguns (unknown number) have been confirmed. This includes a single barreled pump action (possibly the one we've seen in pictures.), a semi auto and a double barreled shotgun. It has also been confirmed there will be a three barreled shotgun that can do extreme damage.

There are roughly four shotguns currently, the Ithaca Model 37, Benelli M3 and Striker which is currently named the Jail Breaker, the Hydra shotgun is the fictional shotgun with 3 barrels. Draco122
My biggest problem with this game
The intense gunplay is cool and fun, but when you come face to face with enemies with AK-74s and RPGS and turrets, having the ability to walk while shooting will go a long way, but the creators didn't want to do that because it takes away the intense quick aiming you have to do. Bullcrap. They did it because they don't want their game to feel like Metal Gear Solid 4 or Gears of Wars. I wouldn't have made this complaint if all enemies don't shoot back with full auto assault rifles. Bows and arrows and crossbows are ok, but when AKs are shooting at you, I like a better cover system and moving while shooting or aiming so I can peer around corners and take out threats. Excalibur01 12:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Ditto here, there is nothing more frustraiting to just sit there and try to shoot back when one has trained IRL to shoot while moveing. Rockwolf66
:I have to agree. While I hugely enjoyed the game, having to freeze while shooting kind of sucked. However, it'd probably best to stay put when blasting away with the Gatling Gun. M14fanboy 06:16, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
::I have to disagree 100%. Resident Evil is supposed to be a survival horror game, not Metal Gear Solid, Halo, or Gears of War. It's not supposed to be a shooter. The franchise I loved for so long has begun to die since the day RE4 was released thanks to incorporating too many shooter elements. Spartan198 02:10, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

:look, there's survival horror in the sense that you are having to feel the horror and surviving it. But the gameplay is not realistic. And RE5 is more action than horror. It's saying Alien is horror and Aliens is action horror. RE5 is more action oriented and should have the capabilities of the 3rd person, on the move shooting. Look, if the creators wanted more Survival horror in RE5, they should have made the theme and story less action pack genre and more like the previous games before 4. Give it a more scare aspect. Fighting hordes of enemies isn't horror, it's annoying Excalibur01

RE4 should have never been made. How the HELL did they get RE4 after making RE1 GC (the gold standard of RE survival-horror; RE2 exceeds it in its novelty of new elements, but RE1 GC did everything by the book and perfectly), Zero, and Outbreak? Anyway, it's almost stupid easy to kill the AK gunmen in RE5, because they waste ammunition on cover (letting you headshot them while they reload) and don't fire while moving (if you can't beat RE5's AK AI, then you probably aren't good at GoW or any other shooter either). They get the same HP as standard Majini, so all you need to do is save grenades and just blind-toss them. I liken RE4/5 to the RE movies in that while they have the same "context", they just suck as RE games.

It doesn't really make a difference anyway, because now Capcom has to reboot the entire canon after TWO action-horror games. With the success of LIN and the dismal failure of RE5 in terms of popular approval (even critics are panning it, despite the fact that it's basically RE4 with all of the action-horror elements that they wanted; one site called RE4 "Game of the Decade" while making no mention of RE5), hopefully they do a total reboot and get rid of this action-horror nonsense.

:I haven't heard much about "Lost in Nightmare." How is it better than base RE5?

:I'll agree that the REmake on Gamecube was plenty scary, given elements like the Crimson Heads arising out of downed zombies you either didn't headshot, blow the knees off of, or burn, or "itChy iTchy sCoTT caMe uGLy FAce so KIlleD hiM. taSTy," or truly classic monsters like Lisa the Mutant, but you have to admit a lot of the difficulty in that game was because of the very wonky controls and the fact that you really couldn't aim very well. Those controls should stay in the past where they rightfully belong--I don't think gamers of today would take very kindly to not being able to dodge zombies due to poor controls. Sure wish we had a full-fledged remake of RE1 with the entire STARS team with today's tech though.--Mazryonh 01:07, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

The controls are used as part of the cinematic-emulating pacing elements; that's why you can't move while you shoot or be able to directly aim for the head in RE1 GC. Don't think of them as merely games that are under the RE title, think of them as zombie-horror pieces in their own right. By definition, RE1 GC did practically everything right in terms of creating a zombie-horror atmosphere; the camera angles that acted like the ones in Romero's Living Dead, the lack of offensive capability, the shock of the protagonist characters, inclusion of human flaws as part of the game's theme (Wesker's hubris, Brad's cowardice), and overall ominous environment is still the best the series has in terms of an actual model.

And in reality, the controls have absolutely nothing to do with the "control" problem. The only difference between RE5 PS3 and RE1 PS3's controls are the Knife button and the Quick-Access button; the difference is the camera. Everyone flips for the OtS, but no one ever pays attention to the fact that it totally DESTROYS a game's cinematic value. What kind of movie do you know of that follows the protagonist around from 2 feet behind and 2 feet above? If used in a horror game in particular, it gives the player too much control and inherently destabilizes the effect altogether. Dead Space, which is the only real example of a workable SH game, only succeeded for its novelty; in order to use OtS, they had to balance the game against the player in other aspects, such as using claustrophobic-tight areas and exotic enemies, which took the average OtS player by surprise. Dead Space 2 isn't looking too good (as expected), because they reprised the protagonist as "taking the fight to them" and added rocket boots (which means that the player is going to face zero gravity with both the advantages of OtS/boots and prior experience, turning it into a mere formality), along with the fact that they have to TOP their previous game's enemy design to challenge the player's OtS advantage sufficiently. Silent Hill's take on OtS is obviously a one-time deal; it also did all of the horror elements properly, but its style cannot be repeated for important reasons (one, it takes away the combat aspect entirely, which is, as you said, a novelty nowadays, and two, it's more of an isolated intensity; it plays a unique way, and any further encroachment would just cheapen it).

The camera was designed to encourage the player to evade or avoid enemies instead of directly attacking them (which is how a counterpart in the Living Dead series would react as well). Just like in the Living Dead series, the protagonist has a difficulty getting a bead on enemies and is disoriented mentally relative to their situation.

LIN is a fair bit better than the base game in terms of survival-horror because it puts much greater emphasis on puzzle solving (granted, it's no RE3 or CV, but it's better than RE4 and eons ahead of RE5; some puzzles actually require some degree of examination) and greatly de-emphasizes gunplay (you start with Beretta 92Fs, and there is only one "chapter", meaning you cannot upgrade or purchase weaponry to improve firepower). You still have OtS, which still handicaps the survival-horror, but it is much better.

No kidding, most of the Keepers have to be dealt with without guns, instead of using enviroment kills (conveniently located around sewers). Actually, was there even a part where you were able to gun down those things? --AlkoTanko 18:09, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
::Yes, but the U.S. Military and historians for years called it a sniper rifle. It WAS used in that role in Vietnam by NVA Snipers (as well as M91/30s) It CAN be used in such a role, however, in recent times, much more accurate (and larger caliber) weapons have been built. Calling it a sniper rifle is not ridiculous, though one can always make a note if they really want to be ultra specific about it on the various gun and movie pages. Yeah, it really doesn't make much difference in-game. They all seem to have the same inherent accuracy, virtually no bullet drop, and every one of them is pre-zeroed to hit the same POI. So, it really doesn't matter what you call it. Although I find it really odd how this article says the the 7.62x54R has less power than the .308 Win based 7.62x51mm. I mean, you can SEE that the Soviet round has 3mm more case capacity, which means that it has a greater possible power level. In-game, the Russian round is the same as the .308 Win round, but that could be explained by downloading it. Again, I suppose it really doesn't make a difference.
The only aspect of the Gold edition I like is the mansion level which is a return back to Resident Evil 1 where you have limited ammo and a more darker aspect. It's more scary than RE5 would be.
This is a quote from an interview with the military advisor of the film about how he outfitted Frank

"We used weapons based on need and back-story and nothing made up. All of the Punisher’s weapons currently exist and are being used in modern combat! The Punisher originated out of Vietnam, so his primary weapon in the film is an M-4 which he would feel the most comfortable with. To that I mounted a mini grenade launcher using thermo baric grenades for point detonations. I followed that up with the most powerful revolver on the planet, a Knight’s Armament/Smith&Wesson custom Model 500 .50 cal, in a breakaway leg holster as his back-up!
We created two fully automatic Beretta 92f handguns for close quarter combat.
In the opening of the film he uses ultra reliable H&K custom MP5’s in fully automatic that he carries in the small of his back, and for speed draws a H&K USP compact .45.
I also had a custom mini 13” Bolo machete combat knife created that he carries on a leg holster for hand to hand.
The result was modern weapons used in the modern time, but in full Punisher style!"
:Not a very good advisor, is he? The Smith & Wesson 500 is the most powerful production revolver, certainly not the most powerful on the planet. The .600 Nitro Revolver made by some guy that weighs about 12 pounds is the most powerful. Sounds like he's a little too excited about his decisions. Personally, this movie looks like it will suck, but I'll give it a chance. -GM
::The Pfeifer Zeliska .600 Nitro Express revolver is more powerful but it IS NOT a "production revolver" so sorry to break to you chief and your expertise.. but SW 500 "most powerful production revolver in the world today" so the Military Advisor is right.-D
:::You are aware I'm the one who said it's athe most powerful production revolver right? He said it was the most powerful in the world, but it isn't. I said the Pfeifer Zeliska was, but it isn't a production gun. Read more carefully next time. - Gunmaster45
::For me, I might not watch this movie really because Thomas Jane isn't in it and it looks like a bad generic action movie. I like how the first one showed how the Punisher really can do things we believe, but the moment I saw the trailer of the Punisher dropping from the ceiling, and spinning around with double MP5Ks...it makes it look like the action style is trying to be John Woo, but even that is over the top. The weapon of choices they give the Punisher movie, in my opinion, doesn't fit for how the Punisher should be. I understand the M4 with the grenade launcher and even the USP as the backup, but apparently, he carries all that in one action sequence. Seems a little too much stuff to carry, but hey, I'll give this movie a chance to JUST because I have to really see it to really critize it. -Ex
:Full auto Beretta Inoxs are very tactically stupid. A S&W 500 is not a back up gun, it's a primary. You don't carry an ankle gun that can down a bear. Personally, I thought the original Punisher comics sucked ass, too "comics" like. Have you ever read a seventies comic? They are terrible. Like a bad '50s safety video. Personally I liked the "Welcome Back, Frank" story which the 2004 film was based on. Thomas Jane was going for the "descent into madness" sort of look like DeNiro in Taxi Driver, which is an interesting idea (although the punisher should not be a physchopath, that's bad). Castle's attachment to 1911s was one of my favorite elements of the story. And my LEAST favorite part of the old comics was the costume. The new story made it a sweet T-shirt, this one brings out the lame ass tights. I just don't have much faith in it. - Gunmaster45
::Are they INOXs or 92FS? I tried to distinguish what I thought was right on the page, but why would they switch Beretta models like that?-UW

:I want to know who this military adviser for the film is and tell him that most of his suggestions for a modern day Punisher arsenal is very stupid. Except the M4 with the GL. The S&W 500 and auto Berettas dual wielding and dual wielding MP5ks while spinning from a chandelier is very stupid and he's watched too many John Woo movies and even John Woo never had his actors spin around a chandelier like that... I followed a lot of the details about this movie for a while before it came out. I think the military advisor was mostly responsible for teaching the handling of the weapons. While it's definitely possible he advised some of these weapon choices, it's more likely director Lexi Alexander made the final calls. I can't say I agree with her vision, but I enjoyed the film for its action and cheesy performances. The 04 version was a serious film that was marred by a lot of stupid stuff and a lack of action. The 08 version was a campy attempt that didn't even try to be serious but had the brutality that the 04 movie lacked. It's sad that a film hasn't yet been made that's done the Punisher justice. I don't know how to post pictures, but put Punisher revolver into a search engine and it will bring up the sweet Knight's Armament custom piece that was made for the final fight, no matter how impractical it may be. A lot of stuff in War Zone was done simply for the sake of theatrics. -- ZG
: The Punisher '04 was plenty bloody and brutal, better constructed and better acted. Tom Jane's Frank Castle, quite frankly, would stomp mudholes right into the Jason Voorhees wannabe that Ray Stevenson either chose to portray or HAD to portray. And frankly, no amount of theatrics can act as an excuse for the absolute tripe that went down in this movie. Seemed like the man was holstering and drawing his pistols every other kill; I'm sorry, isn't he supposed to be former frickin' Special Forces? And for all of the whole "We're more faithful to the comics" crap, I'm not seeing it.
The theatrics, I think, were just another one of the films downfalls. I agree the 04 version was better acted. As for the construction of the films...eh, I've got too many thoughts to list. I'm glad you liked the 04 movie. The fact that both films have so many fans AND detractors just means there's so much territory still to cover, though I think the fans have been part of what tears these movies apart. I'm much more lenient on the film because I have no definitive view of the Punisher and I really have no particular need for material to come directly from the comics. I think we need to step away from the comics and focus on what makes a good movie, instead. Though I was just thinking earlier that War Zone was so goofy and flamboyant, if they were going to drop the Punisher into the Marvel Universe with the likes of Spiderman and Iron Man, this would pretty much be the Punisher I would expect them to use.

:Thomas Jane was completely onboard for the second Punisher movie, but when the producers took too long getting a script up and changing actors, he decided to drop out. I think this movie would have been better if Thomas Jane was in it. And speaking of the 1911, we do see in the movie the Punisher taking a 1911, disasemebling it and cleaning it, but never use it. Excalibur01 10:37, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

:Agreed, Thomas Jane's take on Castle was far superior to Ray Stevenson's (no diss to Ray, though, as he's one of my favorite actors). And I also agree that the weapon selections (save for the M4A1, the SL8, and the MP5Ks) sucked. They should have given him 1911s instead of Beretta 92s or that 500 and put an M203 on the M4 instead of that AGX. Spartan198 17:20, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi everybody i was just wonering wher did he keep his usp compact?

the Punisher seems like a Vigilante slowly going down hill then a action hero rex095

Better than the Thomas Jane one there reason is Castle has no super powers but he has one that could be a super power his incredible pain tolerance he just doesn't care about pain he is a pure killing machine no regrets whatsoever and that's why this movie nailed it, Jane was a pussy with his t shirt and getting beaten all the time in this movie even though he got the shit kicked out of him by Jigsaws brother he didn't even flinch he didn't hesitate to kill micro cause that was what he had to do Punisher doesn't care about life if it can't be saved he wont try

:The Jane Punisher getting the shit kicked out of him by the Russian was straight out of the comics and very faithful to how it played on film. The fight with LBJ was frankly anemic, and boring. Also, if he doesn't care about a life that he knows can not be saved, then why the hell did he tell the ex-gangbanger who was missing limbs and had an axe in his chest not to die on him? That is a very un-Punisher thing to say.

:And that one shot in the 2004 film of Jane shooting a thug lying wounded on the ground without given him any notice or care, says a lot more about the character than killing 50 criminals in one scene.173.88.129.35

:My weigh in on the Russian fight is that I just wasn't a big fan of Castle getting beat up. I didn't like how it was done in the comic and the movie recreation was just so-so. If you've ever played the PS2 or Xbox Punisher game, that scenario plays out with Frank kicking the crap out of the Russian and tossing him out a window. I'd have liked that better. As for the injured ex-gangbanger, to me that showed a bit of character development from Frank, who had previously shown his distaste for the man, but after working with him had come to view him as an ally. This is something we'd probably never see in the comic, and I liked it. I did really like the shootout in the 04 Punisher, especially when he finished off the wounded guy, but I also felt we got the same type of brutal Punisher mindset when Stevenson threw McGinty onto an iron fence before jumping down on his neck. What I liked the most about the Dolph Lundgren and Ray Stevenson films is that they showed that the Punisher can viciously murder criminals and still be a GOOD GUY without dealing with all that anti-hero moral conundrum bullcrap. -- ZG

::Regarding the gangbanger thing, you may have liked but it was a completely out of character thing for him to say, even to an ally. They went for a cliched moment that was out of character.173.88.129.35
Also, scenes being constantly neonlighted got pretty annoying fast. I'm sure the idea sounds cool in paper, but is quite the opposite in practice. -AlkoTanko

Ok, tho i might not be the biggest military buff, i did a few years in the royal marines, but i do know comics and i know the punisher, bitch all you like about the stupid MP5 cieling deal , cus that was retarded, but this is garthe ennis's marvel max punisher, the punisher comics every tru punisher fan swears by. The 2004 tom jane job was based loosely on welcome back frank and punisher year one. Garth ennis wrote welcome back frank as a tester to get punisher made into a serious adult title and he self proclaimed hating the stupid bits in the comic such as the russian. Now you can say that tom janes version was any less tactially aware than stevensons, i mean he took a 40mm lancher into a nightclub and didnt even cover up his arms. Im not sayin i dont like the 2004 version, but it wasnt the punisher. Just angry op the movie, wrong actor, wrong location and a shity villain. So im gonna defend stevensons monosyallabic rough house, and dont forget kiddies, this is based on a comic book movie --Captain Snikt 03:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

OK, anyone who has read Punisher knows he loses a lot of fights, it creates dramatic tension. If he won hands down every fight it would get boring, there needs to be a challenge. That's why every one of the Ennis stories had an epic fight with someone of Frank's aptitude. Second, Frank rarely gives a shit when people die, especially gangbangers reformed or not. The only one in recent memory was O'Brian. Third, they screwed up every villain from the comic. Pitsy was supposed to be an old tough bastard with a "Fuck you you fuckin fuck!" attitude, in this he was more a tag-along fuck-tard. McGinty was a torture loving psycho out for money, not a meth addict free-runner looking for a fun time. Christu Bulat was an irredeemable rapist war criminal, not a kindly old man who had rules who you could make a deal wit. Where should i start with Jigsaw? That being said Stevenson was a pretty good Castle, and Wayne Knight was a pretty good Micro. the movie around them was what sucked, the over the top Jigsaw, the ceiling shooting, and Nicky Cavella the undercover cop instead of the maniac from the comic ruined this film. It talked a good game in the locker room but was shaky when it was time to put on the cleats.

What they should've done was just adapt some Punisher: Max stories, seriously, those're awesome. In fact, wouldn't it be great if directors could just get their head around the fact that they could simply take the comic DIRECTLY into a movie? Of course, then you have their egos to deal with, and then all hell breaks loose... I noticed someone said above that Frank doesn't like the M16/M4. This is true, but he actually does use it, because he likes the M203. And speaking of firearms, would a suppressor on a .50 cal revolver even do anything? I mean, don't revolvers have that gap between the barrel and cylinder, making supporessors useless besides hiding muzzle flash? And another thing; he puts a scope onto the smaller 500, but doesn't put one onto the longer 500, which has a picattiny rail built into it just for scopes? Holy shit, that's just sad. Will there ever be a movie that has a bunch of firearms, but doesn't screw them all up? Huh...you know, imagine that, if some director asks for advice from a site like this to make sure he knows what the hell he's doing. Now that I think about it, why don't the armorers ever tell them about that stuff? Whatever...--Zblayde 02:36, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Welcome to our new server! This is the first of many steps I am taking to ensure we never lose data again. The site used to be hosted on shared hosting overseas - we now have a dedicated server housed in a colocation in San Jose, CA. Dedicated servers don't come cheap, but your time, effort, and contributions are now my number one priority.

I'm still transferring the images that have been uploaded over the last couple days, don't worry they're not lost!

<small>Very Bad Things have happened. Our main server went down as well as our secondary server which was housing the daily backups. The last backup file we were able to successfully access was from December 21, 2007. I am heartbroken to say we have lost the last 10 weeks worth of edits - I don't know what to say to all the users except that I am incredibly saddened by the loss of all of our efforts and that I will take all steps in my power to make sure this never happens again. Now - all of your work from the last 10 weeks is not lost! If you know a page you worked on is missing go to google and search imfdb.org along with the name of the page you want back, for example "imfdb.org Terminator 2" and you will most likely find google still has a cached copy! Click on the "cached" link in the bottom of the listing and you'll be able to copy the text! Now, the screenshots for the last 10 weeks are completely gone - and I am going to do my absolute best to create new screenshots for as many pages as is humanly possible. I'm still uploading screenshots from the backup so you'll notice a lot of broken images for the time being.

Also, all users who have joined in the last 10 weeks have lost their accounts - please sign up again! And if you know a page you created or worked on is gone please search for it in google and recreate the page with the cached text.

If you don't want to go to all that trouble, just leave a note on my talk page with the page that is missing and I'll do all the legwork and get new screenshots!
The McUzi
It wasn’t until I read the ‘Raw Deal’ article on the “fake Uzi” that I realized Hollywood was dressing MAC-10s up as Uzis.

In ‘The Dog of War’ the mercenaries are supposed to be using Uzis. However some are using MAC-10s and some are using MACs dressed up as Uzis. The actors seem to change weapons randomly. For example, as the climactic battle begins Tom Berenger is using a real Uzi and Christopher Walken is using a silenced Uzi. However in the final minutes both are using McUzis. This is made painfully clear as Walken holds the gun to his face when reloading.

There are real MAC Uzi hybrids. These are civilian versions of the Uzi with a .45 barrel, bolt and a MAC-10 magazine well to accept the universal Grease Gun magazines.

The Hollywood guns are merely MACs with Uzi parts added on.

I would see to real reason to make a gun like this accept that the filmmakers wanted to use Uzis but ran out. Much like ‘Planet of the Apes’ when the studio ran out of ape costumes they simply used paper mask. If you look closely at the audience of Heston’s mock trial.

I captured some great stills to add to ‘The Dogs of War’ article.````

::Ah, OK then. We all have our own methods of doing so. Personally, I play my DVDs using VLC Media Player, which has a Snapshot feature which lets you take screenshots when paused, and then it saves them automatically as JPEGs or PNGs to a designated folder of your choosing. However, that's ONLY when I'm screencapping movies I own on DVD. I also rent and download movies using iTunes which I might screencap for IMFDB pages, and I can't play those with VLC. In those cases, I just hit the "Print Screen" key, paste the image into MSPaint, and then crop away the iTunes browser so that only the movie image remains. Then I save them to my HD in a designated folder. Once I've acquired enough screenshots for a movie, I use "Upload file" to put them on IMFDB so that I can use them for pages I edit. -MT2008

::First and most importantly, you need a DVD drive in your computer to watch the movie. I watch mine on Windows WinDVD system, which has a built in "screencap" button by pressing P, which saves them all in WinDVD file. I take those files from the folder, which are all saved under BMPs and re-save them as JPGs using Corel Paintshop. If they are widescreen, I use crop to cut them out. I then upload them to the site and post them. Now that I've read MT2008's method for iTunes, I can screencap Shoot 'Em Up which wasn't compatable with my WinDVD system, but worked on my other DVD player which had no screencap button. Hooray! -GM45

And also you can use the program I use which is CyberLink PowerDVD which also has a built in Screenshot button. First the screenshots start out as BMPs, but then I use Irfan View to save them as JPGs to a different folder. And if they are widescreen, I use Windows Photo Gallery to crop off the black bars. You should also check out Gunmaster's and MT2008's methods because they might be better.--Alienqueen11 18:02, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
What about taking pictures on a digital camera and uploading them to your PC? Does anyone know if it works?TheDon152 21:41, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

::Thats a very myspace101 question but it's simple there's about 4 ways to do it but I've only done 2. (This demonstration is only done on Windows XP)

:::Option 1: If your camera has a memory slot like a (Compact Flash, Secure Digital, Mini SD, Micro SD, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard (MMC), SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card (xD), etc.) you could remove the card from the camera. Step 1: Once you removed the card from the camera if you have a compatible USB card reader you can plug the card reader into the computer and plug the card into the card reader. The most common great quality card reader brands are (Sandisk, Memorex, PNY, and Lexar) for approximately $20.00 at Wal-Mart.

:::Option 2: If your camera has a connection for a USB cable. Step 1: You can easily find and plug the USB adaptor into the camera and plug the other end of the plug into you computer.

:::The upload process is easy (tested on Windows XP) your computer bottom right task tray will show a "Found New Hardware" icon and be gone that means your camera is connected. Step 2: A pop up will show on how you want to view your images click on "view with Windows" if this pop up does not pop up you will have to manually follow step 3 if not skip on to step 4. Step 3: You may click "My Computer" or "My Documents" most likely on the desktop or start menu on your computer you will go to "My Computer" and find a folder that says a brand of your memory card or camera. Step: 4 Click on the folder and look through all folders and once you find it you may highlight the folder or the selected images on your computer mouse right click and press copy (or press Ctrl+C on your keyboard) and paste the images where ever you want in your computer.
Is something wrong with the site. Why are all the pics being fixed with "([edit=sysop:move=sysop])" for a protection log? I know little about that technical stuff, is someone removing the pics or are they just being protected from over-uploading crappy pics over? -GM
Deleting old files
As y'all can probably tell, I have been on a huge deleting spree recently. I've been getting rid of files that weren't being used for whatever reason or another. Some of them were gun images that have since been replaced by MoviePropMaster's images, others were old screencaps that have been replaced by newer ones (like all of my old Hard Boiled shots, which have since been replaced by GunMaster's), and some were those images of weird experimental guns uploaded by Cutaway that don't appear in any movie and thus have no purpose on this site.

I realize, of course, that this by itself won't relieve the strain on the servers; it's inevitable as this site grows. But it seems like a worthwhile thing to do. If anyone of the Admins are interested in helping out, please go to "Special Pages" and click on "Unused Files" (at the top). If you see something that might be worth keeping (i.e. Choi's screencaps from The Killer which haven't been put on the page yet), leave it alone, but if you see gun images that obviously have no use or screencaps that you know have been replaced...ditch 'em.

Thanks. -MT2008
Fictional Firearms
I propose that we denote pages for 'fictional' firearms with parentheses "like Non Guns" so that they are in a different grouping than real guns. GM has made pages for the fantasy weapons of Hellboy II and that made me think about custom pages for the Morita Rifle (Starship troopers) or the M590 (Space:Above and Beyond) or the Blade Runner Pistol or any of the Star Wars guns (versus other types of Sci fi weapons, these should be guns). Even though THESE fictional guns are based on real guns, they can have their own pages with links to the original weapons page. Regardless, I think that guns that aren't real should be separated, lest they confuse users. Thoughts anyone? Thanks in advance.
MoviePropMaster2008 18:45, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

:I agree. I was kinda turned off when I saw the Aliens Resurrection page. None of those guns were based off of real firearms or even guns dressed up to look like futuristic guns.

::Well I get the point of making a post about fictional guns that were built around real guns like the Morita rifle and the Pulse Rifle of Aliens, but guns that were built from scratch like the Samaritian. Would it really need a page here or is that just for the fanboys who like the gun? It's like a page for the cars used in the Punisher movie or people who like to include knives, swords, and even bows & arrow in pages, including me. Excalibur01 13:52, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
:::The advantage is that the page can inform an interested user that the prop was NOT based on any real firearm, information that is just as important as informing 'what real firearm' was used in a prop weapon. == My gripe on Empty pages ==

I've been seeing a lot of new pages lately. The problem is that they are a blank! Nothing, not even a list of guns. What the fuck? I mean, a list of guns with no photos is ok, but just a fucking blank page? Do the people that do that expect someone else to do the work for them? They mind as well type down, "someone list the guns and put up pics for me cause I am lazy as fuck to even give a list." At least writing that down says something. Not just a blank.
:We all understand your pain Exy, we need a more efficient way to let the anonymous users know that if you make a page, you got to do the work. You gotta watch the language though, people will see it and think it is okay to do often. We all do it, but we don't want it done for no reason. Just ignore the empty pages, let them do the work eventually. If they don't, delete the pages. Half of them are movies I've never heard of anyway. Keep an eye out for Tropic Thunder and The Shawshank Redemption, I'll have them done this week. -GM
::What about that new member who create thirty or so new movie pages (some of which barely had one gun in them) and then never filled out any of those pages? I'm tempted to give people a little time, but for movies in which I question their relevance to this site, I'm also tempted to get rid of blank pages and let people create them when they're ready to populate them with information. MPM
:::Sorry for the foul launguage. I'm used to talking on forums where the F word is acceptable when you are pissed. Nice job on the Tropic Thunder and The Shawshank Redemption pages. I've only done one movie that had ONE gun in it and it was The Forbidden Kingdom and even I did the work for it. I guess the anonymous users might also just be curious guys online and just hope we know what movie they are talking about, have it, and would take the time to tell them what guns are in it by doing the pages, but maybe on the main page, someone should put down rules of how to operate this site. =="jacked" summaries"==
One thing that irks me is people 'cut and pasting' a plot summary completely from IMDB. This is not only against IMFDB rules, but if any mods from IMDB sees them, they can make an stink about it. I'm tempted to 'erase' any pirated summaries and put a note to the original writer "Write your own summary in your own words. It isn't too hard, even to re-arrange the sentences and replace some words to make it LOOK like you wrote it yourself. Just don't lift them word for word from another well known source. IMDB itself has a rule that you must write your own summaries and not lift them from other 3rd party sources. So does IMFDB.org. " Of course there are so many jacked firearm images here, this may be hypocritical. Which is why I'm working so hard to get IMFDB their own exclusive gun images. But it's one thing to upload an image of an impossible to get gun which no one has, versus taking the time to type a few sentences...
:I agree. I did the same thing with my Black Lagoon page when I got here, but I took it off mainly because I didn't see the need for a summary at the beginning of the page that is THAT long winded. People are here for the guns and if they want to know what the movie or show is about, they just look it up. I don't know, I stopped writing summaries for movies and shows long ago. :::I disagree with those who think "we don't need no stinkin' summaries..." For those people who have NOT seen the movie a SHORT summaries are okay. I've put them on some of my pages, usually when I have something interesting to add. I do like them when someone puts a page for a movie so obscure that I have no idea what it's about (and I don't want to have to go hunting around the web to find out, capice?) I added summaries (and others did) for those REALLY OBSCURE East german B&W movies that are on the site. Who created those pages anyway? Like anyone's going to see Black and white German language communist era DDR movies .... oh well. I can always start creating pages for the cinema of 1930s Lithuania! hahahaha. But having no summary for SOME of the pages sucks. MoviePropMaster2008 18:25, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
::I found some summaries to stick out too much. Maybe a sentence or two to just give the jist, or a catch phrase like, but really I don't do summaries anymore. I think when they think about it, they may realize that no one is trying to be insulting. When I screencap, I edit the pictures. Sure I might have 14 shots, but I choose the best couple and cull the rest. I don't feel compelled to force everyone to look at every since solitary screenshot, just because I took the time to do them. Just like a writer or artist, you must have the maturity to cut out what is excess, even though at the time it sucks to cut out stuff you like. Looks like some of the new (i.e. young also) members are trying to outdo the record for ridiculous screencaps. We Were Soldiers is now a page that I no longer like to look at, now that I have to scroll down for ten minutes to see the next section. :( MoviePropMaster2008 04:01, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

i have many films, games exc that i want to screencap. please can someone tell me how to?
:You need a DVD-rom drive on your computer. Play the movie on a DVD player with a screencapture function. The images will be saved to a folder. Cut off any widescreen or full screen bars and convert the image to a JPG so it can be placed here. You'll need a photo editor such as Corel Photoshop or even Paintshop. Then go to the Upload file section and upload them on the site. Copy the picture's linkage (will say something like "Image:name.jpg") then put the image in double brackets [[]] and paste the linkage. now you'd take this image and write it like this:

Grammar/Spelling
-
- Hello gentlemen. First off I just want to start of by telling you guys how much I enjoy this site. Anyhow, I come visiting from IMCDb (Internet Movie Car Database). I'm an administrator over there and given my interest in weapons and the similarity between the two sites, I've taken an interest in visiting your site. However, I've noticed a problem that I wanted to bring up to your guys' attention. Often times there are grammar and spelling mistakes and I think that it is something that you guys can improve upon a bit more. I don't mean to sound like I'm criticizing or I'm calling anybody stupid or anything, but it's things like that that could make the site look cleaner and more appealing. And yes, I do understand that english may not be the first language for some of the posters here. My point is that I'm just giving some friendly advice from who I'd like to think of as someone from a "sister" site. Thanks gents...keep up the great work.

:: We have tons of contributors who aren't even old enough to shave yet. Does that tell you anything? GM45 once described it as a small group of Mods/ Super users fighting against the cresting tide of the ocean, or something to that effect. :) An apt metaphor. MoviePropMaster2008 04:03, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

:::Hi, I am a fan of IMCDB myself (it was where I learned all about how M1 Abrams tanks in Hollywood are mocked-up Centurions). I do appreciate your concerns about grammar/spelling and agree with you that it needs to be addressed. However, being that (unlike IMCDB) we are a Wiki open for all to edit, it's somewhat inevitable that this will be an issue. I appreciate the fact that this is less of an issue with IMCDB due to the format of the site, and at times, I wish we could integrate elements of IMCDB into this site to standardize things a bit (I still get annoyed when I see people who call a Beretta 92F a "Berretta M92F" even though it says at the top of the page that this is not the correct spelling). -MT2008

::::Fellas, I greatly appreciate the response. I understand the situation with your site and we ourselves deal with some of the same issues, as far as having younger members whose grammar and knowledge isn't exactly ideal. But thanks a lot for the response. And as I said earlier, keep up the good work.

:::::Thanks. We also have foreign contributors who don't have that great of a grasp of English. We also have guys who just don't know how to spell. One of my buddies who is a combat vet, former 82nd Airborne, types like a two year old on his computer. I jokingly say that I have to create a special filter for Babelfish to decypher what he is typing! LOL. MoviePropMaster2008 23:33, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
I was thinkin'. We've got a lot of people on this site, a lot of them are very talented, we could probably make our own movie someday. ::::hahahahaha, uh no. :) Some of us actually work in the movie industry and it's not easy to make a movie, even a crappy backyard effort one with a video camera bought from Walmart. You're right, it's a whimsical fantasy, but you need a TON of talented people who know what they are doing in ALL of the positions of a film production. Not just armorers but you need everyone, a good script, good actors, a good director, a good producer (which amazingly is really hard since the producer is supposed to be a manager, NOT someone who micro manages the work by everyone else), a good crew, skilled camera operators, good cameras, pro lighting gear and a good DP or cinematographer. Oh did I mention TONS of $$ (you could spend a fortune just feeding the crew and paying for insurance and permits - salaries not withstanding). Wait, you also need office staff, pre production staff and post production staff and facilities (digital capture, color correcting, editing, sound engineering and editing) and then where are you going to sell it? You need marketing, posters, ads, trailers, a website, the list goes on and on. No I'm not making fun of your comment. It was funny and just that, fantasizing, but I know you are just throwing this bit out there and are not serious. Can someone please do a page on a movie called Pavement that stars Robert Patrick and Lauren Holly filmed in 2002. I was interested the weapons SWAT used and was pretty sure at one point even though she hadn't fired her weapon while clearing a house the top slide of her sidearm was locked back. I'd do it myself but I don't know where to find this movie as I saw it on TV one night and haven't done it before so wouldn't know how to make a page. Cheers
:Pavement was filmed in South Africa, even though the story is set in San Francisco. Funny how San Francisco, suddenly looks like the scenes from District 9? Lauren Holly used a Vektor CP1 pistol, and yes, she pops out and her slide is open, but it looks like she fired and the editor removed the sequence of her firing, wanting instead for the crazy dude to force her to withdraw by firing his shotgun first. It was an editorial decision that screwed up what was already filmed. The SWAT team used South African R4s, Vektor CR21s, some dummy SIG 550s and one M16A1(probably a replica). The weapons are what one expects from a South African production. MoviePropMaster2008 08:37, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
::You're right in pointing this out. I see NEW MEMBERS are changing the order in the tables on the ACTOR pages. Traditionally it's been WEAPON, then CHARACTER, then MOVIE TITLE, then notes. == A question --

So, this wiki has articles about video games, anime and animated films which are either 3d representations or drawings of guns. So why are stop-motion films, and other animation of this kind not allowed here? Why are they an exception?
::That answer is in the rules. The representations of guns are crude and not appropriate to waste IMFDB resources on. We haven't even covered the majority of our CORE genres (Films, Television shows, Anime & VG). And many of our pages are very incomplete or lame. So we tend to discourage new members from trying to introduce even MORE genres for us to cover. That and in those genres the guns are too crude to be listed as anything in particular. == Question: Live fire in movies ==

Hi, first of all, please excuse my English, I am not a native speaker. Secondly, please excuse I aks my question here although I know it is not the proper place for this, but I found no forum in this wiki. So here is my question:

When filming the German movie Spione (Spys, but there never was an English version) in 1928, there was live gun firing because they could not simulate it with special effects (1928), and the gun in the scene in question was fired in the direction of one of the actors. Strangely enough this caused a furor only because filming the scene was repeated several times by the director, who was was the lover of the actress in the scene, but it seems there was no talking about the live firing of a gun in a movie per se at all. So was using live fire in movies normal in a time they could not use special effects? Are there more films in which they used live fire instead of special effects? Thanks, Gustav

Hybrid Guns
Dante's Ebony and Ivory are NOT Colt M1911s. They're hybrid guns, combining features from the Colt M1911a and the Heckler & Koch USPs. This is apparant in the slide, area around the recoil spring, and the fact that Ebony and Ivory has pivto-style triggers, like the H&K USP, but unlike the M1911. The same trick of combining two guns was used by Capcom in Resident Evil 4, when they combined an H&K USP, Mk. 23s, and a Smith & Wesson Sigma. If you think I am wrong, please argue for your point of view, but please do not just delete this entry without an explanation. === Ebony and Ivory ===

Dante’s hand-made guns, Ebony and Ivory are heavily customized pistols, seemingly a hybrid design between the Colt M1911 and the H&K Mk. 23. They are similar to certain STI pistols, due to their extended frames. Both weapons sport 1 port compensators to reduce felt recoil and muzzle flip in firing, molded wood grips, custom slides with side exterior ejectors and frames, special engraving, miniaturized Victorian portraits, and extended magazines with slam pads. Despite being paired, Ebony and Ivory are not identical, aside from the colors, the other differences are:

*Ebony has Bo-mar rear sights, A long spur hammer for one handed cocking, And if you notice, Ebony's slide is also designed to eject from the left instead of the right as the Ivory is. The Ebony is exclusively a left hand gun.

*Ivory has smaller sights (novak or MMC), a shorter tactical safety lever and a ring hammer.

Luce & Ombra
The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda's pistols are customized Colt 1911s similar to Dante's, save the engravings of their names, and the fact that they are identical.

Shotgun
A sawed-off 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun Dante holds one-handed and "reloads" by flicking the weapon open and closed, though he never actually puts new shells into it.

Grenade launcher
Resembling an RG-6 but appearing to be mostly fictional, this is a straight-pull bolt action grenade launcher with a revolver magazine operated with a charging handle attached to the left-hand side of the barrel, resembling the more normal underside foregrip rotated ninety degrees. The pause menu animation shows this being operated to rotate the cylinder; it's impossible to tell if this happens in the game, since Dante lets the weapon recoil to the point it's almost vertical during the firing animation.

Devil May Cry 2
Ebony & Ivory
Dante has learned a few new tricks with his handguns in DMC2, most notably the ability to fire at two enemies at the same time, a move styled after the fictional "Gun Kata" martial art in the movie Equilibrium.

Shotgun
Dante finds the shotgun next to a motorbike, in what appears to be a homage to Terminator 2: Judgment Day; however, it's still the same break-open design. Among other moves, Dante acquires a technique in this game called "Fireworks" in which he spins the shotgun around like a nunchaku, firing several times.

Heckler & Koch MP5K
Called the "machine guns" and used in a pair as with Dante's handguns.

FIM-92A Stinger
The FIM-92A Stinger is useable by Dante, called the "rocket launcher."

Rheinmetall MG3A1
The boss "Infested Tank" is a fictional variant of the German Leopard 2 A5 (identified by the shorter L44 main gun); this version mounts a coaxial flamethrower rather than one MG3, but still has the other on the commander's hatch and will attack Dante or Lucia with it if either tries to get on top of the turret.

M230 Chain Gun
The boss "Infested Chopper" is an AH-64 Apache mounting what appear to be two giant Maverick air-to-ground missiles, Hydra rocket packs, and a M230 Chain Gun under the chin.

Devil May Cry 3
Lahti L-39
A gigantic anti-material rifle that uses an overhead magazine, "Spiral" is Devil May Cry 3's heavy long-ranged weapon; it is actually a Lahti L-39 with a shortened barrel, a carrying handle ahead of the magazine, and a wooden foregrip replacing the more usual ski-equipped bipod. One of the special moves has perhaps the most ridiculous physics in the series, which is saying something in a series where being impaled through the chest often fails to even injure the victim's clothes: Dante is said to use a "trick shot" to ricochet the bullet off multiple surfaces to make it go faster.

Kalina Ann
Lady's rocket launcher resembles a highly modified M20 "Super Bazooka" fitted with multiple rear launch tubes for micro-missiles and a bayonet that can be projected on a chain, allowing the launcher to be used as a piton gun. It can be used by Dante; the rockets the main launcher fires have an extremely short self-destruct, making the launcher only useful at close to medium range.

Colt 1911
Lady's pistol(s) of choice are a pair of Colt 1911s, with compensators attached. In the "Welcome Back" cinematic, she performs some truly unbelievable reloads, including slapping a magazine into one in midair, as it falls from the sky.

Vz.61 Skorpion
One of Lady's guns is a Czech SA Vz.61 Skorpion submachine gun.

The Blue Rose is is basically the Smith and Wesson Model 500, or similar, but with six chambers instead of five, and with two barrels.--Zblayde 02:57, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
