A remake?
I know that the original True Grit was made 42 years ago and for many movie-goers it might as well have been made 100 years ago, but still that's pretty gutsy. Rooster Cogburn was the role that got John Wayne his Oscar and the original movie is a classic. However I will probably go and see this one whne it comes out at Christmas. I like Jeff Bridges and the Coen Brothers. Change of pace for them as well. Well somewhat. --Jcordell 00:24, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

They're both based on a novel by Charles Portis. The Coen's version is apparently closer to the book than the 1969 film is.--John Ryder

The Coen Brothers version looks like it's going to be a lot darker and grittier than the other one. It looks badass. -humanzie3

Those that have read the book know that it also has a good deal of humor, thanks to the first person narration of Mattie Ross. I hope and trust the Coens to include that aspect as well, though not in a voice-over.
I'm glad that Josh Brolin is in this. It'll make up for his piece-of-crap Jonah Hex movie. --Swordfish941 15:41, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Unknown Winchester
Rooster is also seen firing a Winchester at one point in the trailer, though I can't discern which model.

:It looks like a Model 1873, or possibly an 1876. I say it could be an 1876 because of the rather large bore diameter. - Gunmaster45
"Rooster" Cogburn charge
"Rooster" Cogburn could be using his Single Action Army and Mattie Ross Colt Dragoon because it looks like only the gun in his left has a loading lever

nevermind in one of the TV spot trailers is shows there there both Colt navy or Colt Dragoon, it hard to tell

-- I just saw the movie, and can confirm that he uses his two 1851 Navys, contrary to my earlier identification of one Navy and one Dragoon. In fact he never handles Mattie's Dragoon apart from the beginning. -- Blokhed 12/26/10

The revolvers Rooster uses in making the charge are both 2nd model Colt Dragoons. He carries them in pommel holsters on the forks of his saddle. They are from the description in the Portis novel. They are the same model as Mattie's pistol. the reference to "Navy sixes" was an error in dialogue. Rooster carries a 7 1/2" Colt "Peacemaker" in a belt holster as described in the novel.

How does he fire right handed?
Hes blind in his right eye yet he fires long guns right handed, how could he be accurate without seeing the sights?--FIVETWOSEVEN 03:43, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Which hand you use does not matter, eye dominance does. For example, my father shoots right handed while is left eye dominant. - Jeff

You don't get it, he can't SEE out of his right eye, how can he aim if he can not SEE the sights?--FIVETWOSEVEN 20:54, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

you just tilt you head so you left eye is lined up with the sights.

Yeah, note the first picture above, his head is tilted far enough to use his left eye. (Im also right handed and left eye dominant.)

The rope around the Henry Rifle.
I think the rope Brolin's character uses as a carrying strap should be mentioned because i just saw the film in theaters and the 3 other people that were with me were confused with what that was. Don't ask.

Sharps1874 or 1868? (moved from main movie page)
I have seen this carbine mis-identified ever since this movie came out. Apparently others are just repeating what someone else assumed. It was not an 1874 Sharps carbine, of which only 496 were made. He (like the real Texas rangers, see Durham’s “Taming the Nueces Strip”) is using an 1868 Sharps carbine conversion. .50-70….of which 31,000 were converted. from Percussion to Cartridge and distributed to troops and millitia’s and yes, texas rangers…was in use into the 80s.

If you want a replica of that gun, somebody makes an exact one of McNelly’s which is exactly like the one Matt Damon’s character is using.

bc

Chaney's Henry and sling
I just corrected some of the description. In the book, the Henry was NOT stolen from Mattie's father; it is described as Chaney's rifle from the beginning. Also, the book makes special mention of the fact that he uses "a piece of cotton plow line" for a sling. "He could have taken an old piece of harness and made a nice leather strap for it. That would have been too much trouble." - Blokhed, 2/9/11

Is it just me or does the rope obstruck the sights?--Mattatack92 23:32, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

It does obstruck the sights, but we never actually see him fire from the shoulder in the movie.--Insight11 20:43, 29 June 2011 (CDT)

Possible identification error
In this image, it appears Cogburn is holding Mattie's Colt Dragoon. The barrel and frame appear thicker than on a Navy Colt, and the loading lever latch is smaller like a Dragoon, instead of covering the whole front of the loading lever like on a Navy. Also, the all around size of the revolver appears larger than a Navy. In the other shots it does appear he uses Navy Colts, but I think in this scene he may have used Mattie's gun to shoot the corn dodgers with.
After "earning his stripes", Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) is also given a Beretta by Murphy to use in the hit at the Silver Peso.

In addition to the MacManus brothers and Romeo, the Beretta is also used heavily by many of the Italian mobsters working for Concezio Yakavetta (Judd Nelson) (including almost all of the mobsters guarding him at the Prudential tower).
IMI Desert Eagle Mark XIX - .357 magnum
Before carrying out the hit on the Prudential tower, the MacManus brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) go to an IRA arms dealer to replace their Beretta 92Fs with custom IMI Desert Eagle Mark XIXs with match weights. They are the .357 Magnum version, according to Charles Taylor, the film's armorer, although the script referred to them as .50-caliber models.

Interestingly, this is a reverse of the first movie: In The Boondock Saints, Connor and Murphy traded the Desert Eagles that they confiscated from two Russian mobsters for their suppressed Berettas. In this film, they are trading in their old Berettas for Desert Eagles.
P226Rs are also used by many other characters throughout the movie - FBI Agent Kuntsler (Paul Johansson) carries one as his issued sidearm, and several of the Italian gangsters use them as well. Zombieland is a horror/comedy about four survivors of a Zombie Apocalypse who are traveling west, looking for a place where there are no Zombies. The two girls Wichita, and Little Rock are sisters and are going to the amusement park, Pacific Playland, which they believe is zombie free. Columbus and Tallahassee are not so sure. In the film, survivors usually don't share their real names for fear of getting too attached, so people are known by the city they are from. On the poster, the characters of Wichita and Little Rock are carrying a chainsaw and a shovel, items carried in the film by Tallahassee before he met the girls.
Note: In the above screenshot, if you look carefully you can see horizontal 'lines' in the frame. This is because the movie was filmed using Digital video, not actual film. The production used the Panavision Genesis digital camera (a high definition video camera) and then transferred to film later. These 'shockwave lines' occur when an explosion or shockwave happens near the camera, creating flaws in the image. This problem occurs with ALL video technology currently. It is not a problem with actual FILM cameras because they use actual film and mechanical gates which are not affected by the shockwaves of gun fire.
Seen during one of the vistas of destruction, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) and Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) walk through a destroyed town, with a tan painted British Chieftain tank sitting in the street. Because of the Gun Control Act of 1968, it is nearly impossible to get an M1 Abrams tank for private use (i.e. a movie prop vehicle company), so many of the "M1" tanks that you see in TV and films are actually modified British Chieftan tanks. Sometimes, as in the case of this film, the tank isn't even modified to look like an M1 Abrams tank. Because it is a Chieftain, we have to assume that it's mounted with an L11A5 120 mm rifled gun.
Beretta 92FS
The MacManus brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) again use the Beretta 92FS pistols with suppressors that were used in the first film.

Para-Ordnance SSP
A pair of custom Para-Ordnance SSP with golden suppressors are used by Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) as his main weapons. The slides of the SSPs are engraved with "El Jefe" ("The Boss") in gold trim. As with the MacManus brothers' Desert Eagles, these weapons were custom-built for the movie by armorer Charles Taylor.
A Mossberg 500 Compact Cruiser is used by Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) during the final shootout.
Baby Browning
Before the shootout at the warehouse, the MacManus brothers give Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.) a nickel Baby Browning with pearl grips to use, much to his disappointment. Although they describe this as a ".22", this is likely a script error.

SIG-Sauer P226/P226R
Crew Cut (Daniel DeSanto) uses a pair of suppressed SIG-Sauer P226R pistols to murder the priest at the beginning of the movie. He later uses a single P226R (this time without the suppressor) when he attacks the Saints at Doc's bar.

P226Rs are also used by many other characters throughout the movie - FBI Agent Kuntsler (Paul Johansson) carries one as his issued sidearm, and several of the Italian gangsters use them as well. Also, a pair of two-tone P226s (both older models without Picatinny rails) are used by one of the gunmen who takes part in the final shootout.
The Colt Python appears in-game under name "Python". Player can use it to clean Vietcong´s tunnels in one of campaign missions. It has a snub-nose variant for use in multiplayer, which can be purchased, and stupidly makes the pistol more accurate.(however the in-game stat of accuracy denotes the recoil a higher stat meaning less recoil and not where it actually hits) Available attachments are speed-loaders for your reserve ammo and a small revolver-use scope.
Colt Commando
Throughout the game, it appears to have a short barrel like the Colt Model 733 and a flat top. While the weapon is not completely anachronistic since the Rock Island Arsenal did experiment with a weaver-rail mounted AR-10 known as the Model 656, the presence of back up iron sights and holosights on the weapon (as seen in multiplayer) can be considered unrealistic. Early screenshots and footage showed a modeling mistake on the rifle, with the magazine looking as if it were partly falling out, but the final game has it at its proper length. It still possesses an erroneous 30-round capacity, though. Ironically, the proper, curved 30-round mag does appear in game, but only with the Extended Mags attachment, in which case it actually holds more than 30 rounds.
M16
The original M16 can be seen few times in Insight video. It is shown as burst fire in multiplayer, and holding 30 rounds despite the 20 round magazine modeled. Like with the aforementioned Colt Commando, the 30-round mag only appears with the Extended Mags attachment, and actually holds more than its intended capacity in that case. It fires in fully-automatic mode in single player, while in multiplayer it uses the 3 round burst firing mode, which would be anachronistic as the real M16A1 had a fully automatic firing mode (later A2 and A4 models had burst fire). Treyarch developer Josh Olin said that it was "an early prototype".
It should be noted that even though the SPAS-12 is depicted as being used by Vietnamese and American soldiers in 1968, it did not actually enter production until 1979. In contrast to MW2's SPAS, the one featured in Black Ops appears to be semi-auto. Despite this, when it is picked up the player pumps the weapon, even though the charging handle on the right side of it must be pulled back to toggle semi-automatic firing mode. It should also be noted that Dragon's breath is underpowered and not rated for use in semis due to insufficent energy to cycle the action.
GE M134 Minigun
A handheld M134 Minigun is available in multiplayer as a Kill Streak reward and can also be found during the campaign level "Vorkuta", under the name "Death Machine".

This weapon is a modified version of the now-standard Terminator 2-style Minigun with some slight alterations. First the chainsaw grip is offset to the left and the Y-frame and rear grip are tilted to the right so that when the player holds the weapon, it is tilted to the left. Because of this the Y-frame is not actually attached to the recoil adapter assemblies which makes them completely extraneous. Additionally the barrel cluster incorrectly spins clock-wise from the player's perspective and features a custom three-disc barrel clamp rather than the traditional four-disc clamp.

Brass and links eject from the 12 o'clock position sending a stream of shells up and to the left. In reality the links would be ejected from the feeder/delinker where the chute is attached on the right side of the weapon and the brass would eject from the bottom. Likely this was altered for a more cinematic effect while using the gun. Finally the firing mechanism is a thumb switch on top of the rear grip rather than a traditional trigger.

The gun itself is fed from a 999-round (499 rounds in multiplayer) belt loaded into a chute from the first person perspective. In the third person the weapon has no visible ammo or power source. Despite the rotational speed of the barrel cluster (it spins so fast that it appears to be slowly rotating the opposite direction) the weapon only fires about 1000 rounds per minute. There is a slight spin up and spin down of the barrels before and after firing. Though it is only a fraction of a second and doesn't impede gameplay, it is technically incorrect as the M134's action is cycled by barrel rotation and would start firing as soon as the cluster rotated and would continue to fire until the cluster stopped. The XM214 had a feature that would declutch the feeder/delinker during spin down to conserve ammo, but the "Death Machine" is based on the M134, not the XM214, which was developed much later. Realistically the weapon overheats at bursts of just over 100 rounds.
The M60E3 general purpose machine gun, known as "The Pig" during the Vietnam war, is seen in multiplayer footage. It does not appear to have the forward pistol grip. In-game, the M60E3 uses a modern flip-up rear iron sights instead it's own original sights, like some other weapons available in Black Ops. And like many other weapons in "Black Ops", it's appearance during the Vietnam War is anachronistic.
