We Were Soldiers is a 2002 Vietnam War film directed by Randall Wallace (The Man in the Iron Mask) and stars Mel Gibson, Barry Pepper and Sam Elliott. The film is based on the book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young by Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, US Army (ret.) and former UPI reporter Joe Galloway (played by Gibson and Pepper respectively) that chronicled the first major battle between the United States Army and the People's Army of Vietnam in the Ia Drang Valley in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Gen. Moore, in the documentary seen on the DVD, states that this film is the only one which gets "[the Vietnam War] right."

Although the battle would last more than 300 days, the movie covers only the initial engagement, the first time the US used the Air Mobile Infantry (called "the helicopter soldiers" by a Vietnamese officer) in combat. Over 3 days, Moore's regiment suffered the loss of 72 out of his 395 men and were responsible for over 1800 enemy soldiers KIA out of 4,000. The utterly lop-sided casualty figures helped to convince Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and Vietnam theater commander Gen. William Westmoreland that the communist North Vietnamese could be persuaded to give up their attempt to conquer the South using attrition tactics. Events, of course, would prove this strategy disastrous.

XM16E1 Rifle
The XM16E1 assault rifles are used by the soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, including Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), First Lieutenant Charlie Hastings (Robert Bagnell), Second Lieutenant Jack Geoghegan (Chris Klein), Sergeant Ernie Savage (Ryan Hurst) and most U.S. Army soldiers. Later on the film during the Battle of Landing Zone X-Ray, Joe Galloway (Barry Pepper) uses one as well. Many rifles used in this movie were not actual XM16E1s. The historical XM16E1s had only a partial magazine fence. Many rifles were actually M16A1s mocked up to look like XM16E1s, modified with chromed bolt carriers and 3 prong flash hiders. Apparently there were a few original receiver marked XM16E1s in the mix.

M16 Rifle
Supplementing the large number of XM16E1 rifles built for the production by Cinema Weaponry are some slab side M16 rifles (or unaltered Colt SP1 rifles, which look the same). To the left of the stack (in the screencap) is a slab sided rifle with no forward assist on the upper receiver or magazine fencing on the lower receiver.
M1 Carbine
A Korean War-era M1 Carbine is carried by the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the formal title of South Vietnam) interpreter dressed in tiger stripe fatigues. He appears in the scene in which the NVA scout is captured and interrogated. Viet Minh soldiers also use them against the French during the intro.

M60 Machine Gun
The M60 machine gun is used by several US soldiers. Various door gunners use them as well. Specialist 4 Russell Adams and his assistant gunner Specialist 4 Bill Beck also use an M60 in a deleted scene.

M1911
A Colt M1911 is used by Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley (Sam Elliott) as his main weapon since he prefers the .45 over the M-16; When Moore praises the latter, Plumley says, "Bah, it's plastic...feels like a bb gun to me. I think I'll stick with my pistol." It is not common to see the first model of the M1911 being used by Plumley, since the M1911 was replaced in 1924 by the improved M1911A1 which was the sidearm of the US Military in the Vietnam War, World War II and the Korean War, however they did appear on occasion, usually under special circumstances.

M1911A1
A Colt M1911A1 is seen in the holster of Lt. Col. Hal Moore and most of the soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Division that appear in the movie. Some soldiers use the M1911A1s.

M26 Hand Grenades
In several scenes, U.S. soldiers can be seen with M26 hand grenades strapped to their pouches.

PPSh-41
The NVA and the Vietcong use PPSh-41s submachine guns during the intro sequence and the rest of the movie, with both the standard drum magazine and 35-round box magazines.

PPS-43
The Viet Minh uses PPS-43 submachine guns along side their SKS's and PPSh-41s to kill the French soldiers in the intro sequence that takes place in 1954 in the Indochina War. During the rest of the movie, the PAVN (People's Army of Vietnam, the formal name of the PAVN. Also known as the North Vietnamese Army or NVA.) and Vietcong (Informal name for the National Liberation Front, or NLF.) use the PPS-43 sub machine guns against US Army soldiers in the Battle of Ia Drang.

AK-47
In the film, the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) aka the PAVN (People's Army of Vietnam) used AK-47s with milled receivers. As per the actual battle, we also see several Viet Cong units carrying the same rifle. Real Soviet AK-47s were impossible to get in the U.S. for many years. After the fall of communism, milled receiver AK-47 parts kits were available on the market, and authentic AK-47s were built for the film (using American made milled receivers using the proper markings) and the original Soviet built parts. The AK-47s used in the movie were built by legendary Movie Armorer Mike Papac.

M79 Grenade Launcher
Various US soldiers can be seen carrying M79 grenade launchers in a few scenes. Specialist Galen Bungum (Blake Heron) uses one since he is the grenadier of Sergeant Savage's squad.
MAS-36 Rifle
In the opening scene where the French soldiers are ambushed during the French-Indochinese War, various French soldiers use MAS-36 rifles.

Smith & Wesson Model 15
The .38 caliber revolver pulled out by Maj. Bruce "Snake Shit" Crandall (Greg Kinnear) is most likely a Smith & Wesson Model 15 snubnose. In 2007, the real Crandall was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Ia Drang Valley.
:Yep, that's where they got the Kar98ks and MP40s. Both were common in the hands of NVA and Victor Charlie troops in the Nam. They also got some K98ks from China.-Oliveira 13:39, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
::A lot of surplus German weapons were handed out to other countries and resistance movements by the USSR in the 1950s and 1960s. I have seen photos of MG34 and MG42 machine guns in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Even captured tanks were sent to other countries. PzKpfw IV (Panzer-IV) tanks were sent (sold?) to Syria and used against Israel. So a MG34 appearing in Indo-China in that period is not only historically correct, but a good example of attention to detail by the producers and movie armorers. (Wraith)
MoviePropMaster2008 19:11, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
::Yes, but we are insulting a human being's work. Anyway, i see the difference and i see that i taking the Far Cry 2 article as a reference was foolish. I also asked Vangelis to do that because the captions were getting boring and generic. Ben41 fixed that though.--Oliveira 20:39, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
:::I agree that making jabs and jokes about the actors or the guns and whatnot is bad taste for a war movie, or any movie based on actual events. However, Oliveia has a point. If it isn't fine to make fun of film depictions of guns, then it's not fine for anything. Especially if we consider that holding a gun correctly takes all of five seconds to figure out if you ask the right person, making an accurate gun model in a videogame takes countless hours depending on the complexity, and this isn't even considering all the people responsible for creating a finished product: concept artists, modelers, texture artists, animators, and for that matter, the people who decide what guns are going to be in a game in the first place. So in other words, a typical mistake in a movie takes one man to create and would be easy to fix(before filming is finished), while a mistake in a game could be any one person in the pipeline, and would take good time to fix, yet it's okay to ridicule all of them despite developers having to create everything from nothing. What I'm trying to say is this: actors deserve ridicule for bad handling more than developers do for bad gun modeling. Developers are real people too, only we can't see their faces in the finished product. Regardless, a war movie like this is the wrong place for such comments.--Mr-Jigsaw 22:48, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
: I did, because Oliveira asked me to when he was updating the article. To be honest, I wasn't that sure about some of them, though in many cases the captions they replaced were useless to the point of being insulting (describing what was obviously going on in the shot, typically, as if we write captions for the selectively blind). Also, pointing out people in the background are grinning like idiots does have something to do with the movie, much like pointing out people have very poor weapon handling skills does (and is done on many other pages). I am guessing this, dont take my word, but I think The real Plumley used an M1911A1. If it was easy to aquire a regular M1911 during the early 1960s then it could be likely, but I doubt this. It is true though that the real Plumley didnt use an M16.

Bare in mind Plumley was a World War II vet as well. He could have had an original M1911 issued to him around that time. It's unlikely but he enlisted in 1942 which was close to the height of WWII, maybe they ran out of M1911A1s and issued him an original M1911. Or maybe the film makers gave him an M1911 to further distinguish him from the young grunts. --cool-breeze 15:30, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
The revolver uses by Crandall is a Model 15 with 2 inches barrel and not a Model 13. When Major Crandall points his snub are clearly visible 3 important details: adjustable rear sight, a linear profile that continue upside the 2 inches barrel and Baughman front sight. All particulars that the model 13 does not have. == Browning Hi-Power ==

If the pistol in the movie being used by the French Foreign Legion officer is a Hi-Power, it is not the version illustrated. Note the distinctive "hump" at the rear of the slide, below the sights, visible in the screen shots. This would be characteristic of early Hi-Powers (such as the Inglis production for Allies during WWII, which became the Canadian and British standard sidearm), but not the version shown. During the war in IndoChina, French forces were armed with a variety of weapons, including large numbers of surplus WWII Allied and Axis firearms, as the French military gradually resupplied itself with French arms. Browning Hi-Powers were used by both sides during WWII, and were among the surplus pistols used by the French army.

Otherwise, the pistol looks similar to a French army model 1935S or 9mm 1950 (aka MAC 50, which was based on the 1935S), both of which have a similar "hump" and were in use in the IndoChina wars. Of these, the long grip is more characteristic of the model 1950, although obtaining those is very difficult.

BTW, I have corrected the comment about the movie makers being unable to get a MAB so instead using a Hi-Power. The .32 MAB model D (the only MAB pistol used by the French army) was used only as a stopgap while production of the more powerful 1935A & 1935S ramped up to meet military needs when WWII started (in Europe) in 1939 and in the immediate post-war years. By the time of this ambush (1954) the MAB had been retired from use as an army sidearm, although it was popular with French colonial soldiers and Legionaires as a privately-owned personal weapon.
The models 1935A and 1935S are two separate pistols, both designed in response to a 1935 French military competition, and were intended to become the standard French military sidearm. Unfortunately, production, which began in 1937, was inadequate to meet military needs as WWII began in Europe in 1939. During the German occupation of France the 1935A was kept in production by the German army for use by its forces (the second 1935A image is of a German occupation pistol), while production of the 1935S ceased until the liberation of France in 1944. During the post-war years, these were the official French military sidearms, although extensively supplemented by other pistols (MAB model Ds, Unique model Rs, and surplus WWII Allied and Axis sidearms) until production was sufficient to meet French needs. These pistols were not completely replaced by the model 1950 in French military use until about 1970, and also saw extensive service with the Gendarmerie. The 1935A was the design basis for the Swiss 9mm SIG P210, and the 1935S was the design basis for the 9mm French model 1950 (aka MAC 50).
M1911 pistols are the main sidearms of most of the resistance fighters, including Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura), Félix Lepercq (Paul Crauchet), and ex-legionnaire Guillaume "Le Bison" Vermersch (Christian Barbier). Since they are funded and supplied by the British in the film, with Philippe and Felix once even mentioning that the British were supposed to supply them with silencers, it can be assumed that the M1911 pistols were also British surplus.

Are the screenshots of the Patton and Sherman tanks on the main page really necessary? I see no problem with mentioning what they are in passing if one appears in the background of a screenshot used to identify a firearm, but having a subsection with screenshots of the tanks just to say, "This is an M60 Patton battle tank", is out of IMFDB's scope, isn't it? That's more IMCDB's department and with the seemingly more widespread acceptance of having knives, bows, and whatnot on pages, it's starting to seem like IMFDB is taking a turn toward becoming the Internet Movie Props Database. :\ Spartan198 21:44, 9 April 2012 (CDT)

:::Don't recall how long you've been a member Spartan198 but I think it's been at least back to 2009. During that time, Gun platforms are allowed on movie pages as long as the primary and secondary armament are identified. Those technically count as a 'gun' appearance. Gun platforms have been around nearly as long as IMFDB has existed. MoviePropMaster2008 23:44, 9 April 2012 (CDT)

:Not sure we have any more knives or bows than we used to (explosive bows are typically allowed, but that's about it). MPM has said it's ok for a page to have a "gun platforms" section at the bottom to identify military vehicles which carry weapons, though this isn't very common; see Red Dawn for an example of that.
Does anybody know why sometimes movie covers are so full of anachronisms? Below cover seems to be one of the official ones, but it shows too many mistakes to be credible (for an IMFDB contributor at least). For this movie taking place in the early 1960's, it shows e.g. what looks like an SIG-Sauer P228 (introduced 1988...), a few Russian Hind attack helicopters (introduced 1969...) and some other military items that seem to have been taken randomly from photostock archives. Maybe they ran out of budget? Still a pretty good movie though, --PeeWee055 14:38, 10 April 2012 (CDT)

It mentions some of Tom Hardy's more recent roles, so maybe it qas a quick and lazy attempt to get the fact Mr. Hardy was in the movie out there. And is that a WWII-era Panzer III in the bottom left? BeardedHoplite 21:06, 10 April 2012 (CDT)

Yes, there's a Panzer III/IV on the bottom left and what looks like T-72 on the right. Weird.--Mandolin 22:34, 10 April 2012 (CDT)
SIG P210
It should be noted that the SIG P210s shown here are stand-ins for actual French military sidearms of the period, most especially the French model 1935A, which was the design basis for the P210. Additionally, the 1935S (a separate pistol from the model 1935A, with a different design from a different manufacturer, but also in 7.65 long) and 9mm 1950 (derived from the 1935S) would have been in use, as were assorted WWII sidearms, Allied and Axis, until replaced by the model 1950 as it became available (a process that extended into the 1960s). The M1911A1 is the most commonly seen gun in the movie, used primarily by mob soldier Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks). Connor Rooney (Daniel Craig) also uses an M1911A1. A major error occurs during the hotel fight with Maguire (Jude Law), just before Sullivan fires the 1911's slide is clearly locked back, indicating that the weapon is out of ammunition. (actually, this appears to be a sound-editing error. Slow motion shows Sullivan falling backwards and pulling the trigger, firing the last round and locking back the slide, however the sound of the shot doesn't come until a few moments later, making it appear that he fired the round with the slide locked back. What is interesting is that Sullivan only fires four shots before his slide locks back which means he didn't top off his magazine before the encounter.)
In some shots where an actor is required to fire the 1911 close to another actor, a 1911 "Non Gun" is substituted. Non Guns are electronically-operated and discharge small explosive squibs that make a flash and produce smoke, but they do not eject shell casings or have any moving parts besides the trigger. Sullivan can be seen using a non-gun when he kills Connor Rooney. This is obvious, as the gun fires three times, but no casings are seen leaving the weapon (they are heard hitting the ground), the slide never cycles, and the gun is seen firing with the hammer down, even though it is a single action pistol.
The Smith & Wesson Model 10 is a classic police revolver used by police and military on most continents from the early
1900's until this day. It uses the K-frame size, like the Smith & Wesson Model 15 and Model 19. Earlier versions, including the forerunner model of 1899 up until 1960, had thin barrels and a rounded front sight. Early versions were chambered in .38 Long Colt/.38 Special and occasionally .32-20 WCF. WWII models were also chambered in .38 Smith & Wesson for the British Commonwealth. From 1960 until today it was fitted with a heavier barrel and ramped front sight. Barrels came in 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-inch versions. There was also a special run of the Model 10 with a 2.5" Heavy Barrel made for the Michigan State Police in the 1970's. Formerly known as the "Military and Police" (M&P), the Smith & Wesson Model 10 is the most successful police revolver in history and can be seen in countless movies.
The Battle of Algiers (French Title: La Bataille d'Alger; Italian Title: La battaglia di Algeri) is a 1966 war film directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. Based on true events that occurred between 1954 and 1957, the film depicts the rise of an Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) cell in Algiers, its violent confrontations with the French colonial authorities, and its eventual destruction at the hands of French paratroopers. The film is widely regarded as a classic by revolutionaries and governments alike for its realistic portrayal of urban insurgent and counter-insurgency tactics.

M1911A1 pistols are seen in the waistbands of FLN guerrillas. One is also seen on a table as Ali La Pointe (Brahim Hagiag) and his comrades plan an attack as French paratroopers close in on their location.
The MAT-49 is the most common weapon in the film, appearing in the hands of numerous FLN guerrillas and French soldiers. Virtually all of the paratroopers led by Colonel Mathieu (Jean Martin) use MAT-49s.
