The Ruger Mini-14 is a semi-automatic rifle designed and manufactured by Ruger. It is one of the primary competitors to the AR-15-style rifle on the civilian market. Introduced in 1973, the Mini-14 is so named because of its resemblance to the M14 Battle Rifle. Despite this, it is more mechanically similar to the M1 Garand with its self-cleaning, fixed-piston gas system. In 2003, the Mini-14 was upgraded with a number of functional and cost-saving features and thereafter, the Mini-14 name became used to describe a family of weapons rather than a sole rifle design.

The current basic model of the Mini-14 is known as the Ranch Rifle, featuring either wood or synthetic furniture, a blued or stainless steel receiver, and an 18.5" barrel, along with a detachable scope mount.

The Ruger AC556 is the fully automatic version of the Mini-14 with a distinctive barrel and bayonet lug. These models come with either a pistol grip and side-folding stock or the standard semi-pistol grip fixed stock. Ruger also offers the Mini-14 GB ("Government Barrel" Model) which is a semi-automatic only version of the AC556 originally intended for military, law enforcement, and private security sales. However, many examples of the Mini-14 GB have also entered the civilian market. The full-auto AC556 has a distinctive fire mode selector switch on the back of the receiver that the semi-auto Mini-14 does not.

Please note that many times, a semi-auto only Mini-14 GB rifle is used to impersonate a full auto AC556, especially when mounted into a factory folding stock. Unless the rifle fires full auto, or one can clearly see the selector switch (which the Mini-14 doesn't have), it will be identified as a Mini-14 until its pedigree as an AC556 can be verified.

The Muzzelite MZ14 is a polymer rifle stock that was designed to convert the Ruger Mini-14/AC556 into a compact bullpup carbine. Contrary to some urban legends, these were never seriously looked at as an alternative weapon for law enforcement. The trigger pull is shoddy, too long, and the bullpup itself is back heavy. Most police departments already had full-auto AC556 rifles or semi-auto Rugers (as well as AR-15s) if they needed a 5.56x45mm assault rifle. It is a simple vacuformed clamshell body that uses a rod to activate the trigger. The Muzzelite stock was sold in configurations that could hold the Ruger Mini-14, the Ruger 10/22, and the Marlin Camp Carbine in 9x19mm, though the only version used in most movies or television shows were the Ruger Mini-14 version. In films like Total Recall, the AC556 full-auto carbine with a shorter barrel was used inside this bullpup stock.

The Muzzelite stock enclosed Ruger Mini-14 has been used in countless B-Movies and television shows as a result of its futuristic appearance. Films like Starship Troopers utilized customized futuristic guns based on the Ruger Mini inside of a Muzzelite stock. These were preferred by the prop makers at Hollywood's Hand Prop Room, since the futuristic shape of the Muzzelite stock made it easier to create unusual science fiction rifles, but also the fact that it expands the appearance potential of the Ruger Mini 14, known in the industry as "The Jamless Wonder" as the Mini-14 never jams or stovepipes using movie blanks, something that cannot be said of any of the other common 5.56x45mm weapons used in films.

The Ruger Mini Thirty is a nearly identical rifle except chambered for 7.62x39mm. Except for the magazines, it would be hard to identify a Mini Thirty from a Mini-14 based on purely visual cues.

Introduced in 1987, the Mini Thirty was designed to take advantage of the large amounts of surplus 7.62x39mm ammunition entering the United States and being sold for low prices. Furthermore, the Mini Thirty was also marketed as a deer hunting rifle, as many American states prohibit deer hunting with rifles chambered in less than .243 caliber.

The shotgun is a Stevens model 67 (series E). The model on the site here has a different foregrip on it and is not a very good shot of the gun. I can't find a decent picture of one otherwise except on gunbroker. However, I own one that looks just like the one in the film except not cut down, so I will add a good photo soon. -J3
I've inserted an image of Conklin's ammo-count just before the final battle, highlighting all six shells to point out the continuity issue. == Colt Python Nitpick ==

It's a nitpick but Det. Conklin should not be carrying a Colt Python nor should his partner be carrying a S&W Model 66. Those models are .357 magnums and at the time that the movie was filmed NYPD officers could only carry 38 special revolvers and were only authorized to purchase the S&W Model 10/64, Ruger Speed Six DAO stainless, S&W Model 36/60. Older officers who were carrying a Colt Detective Special and/or Offical Police were grandfathered in. N.Y.P.D. officers purchase their own handguns and in the late eighties the majority of officers either carried the Model 10/64 or the Ruger Speed-Six stainless.

In the 3rd Edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Gun Digest Books; 2006) by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas there is an article about the NYPD Model 64's and 60's by R.M. Vivas. The Model 64 Square Butt 4" was the most common followed by the 4" Round Butt, 3" RB, 2" RB and 3" RB. They were authorized for carry from 1987 - 1993. The Model 60 was authorized for carry from 1987 - 1988. There were issues with that production run so in 1989 S&W offered to replace the Model 60's with a 2" Model 64 RB and a $25.00 gift certificate.

Though the N.Y.P.D. transitioned to 9mm semi-autos in 1993 older officers who wished to stay with their revolvers were grandfathered in. There are still a couple thousand officers on the department carrying revolvers, but their numbers are shrinking every year. I have an article from the New York Times that was printed a few years ago about hese older officers. If you're curious send me a message on my page and I'll e-mail it to you. Or you can go to the forum and look up the thread where I posted the article.

But I understand why the movie had them carrying .357 magnum snubbies. They look better on film. --Jcordell 19:05, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
To my eye, it's too tall and too long in the slide to be a Colt Mustang, especially in the forward half where the slide 'undercut' is longer than on the Mustang. I'm almost tempted to suggest it's a Colt M1903/M1908 Hammerless, or some derivative thereof.--Death by Chains 03:24, 18 August 2020 (NZST)

Black Rain is a 1989 thriller directed by Ridley Scott and starring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as NYPD detectives who find themselves working with the police in Osaka, Japan to recapture the Yakuza boss they were transporting back and mistakenly let go. Making the film was not only grueling, but difficult as there were many clashes in the methods of Western film productions and Japanese film productions operated. Apparently the 'rules & regulations'-oriented Japanese system aggravated cinematographer Howard Atherton so much that he left and the remaining camera work was completed by Jan de Bont (who shot Die Hard and would later direct Speed). It is noteworthy that lead actor Yusaku Matsuda who played the main villain Sato, was dying of cancer, but refused to reveal the advanced stage of his disease to director Ridley Scott for fear that he would be replaced. He finished the movie, telling others that sacrificing his chances at "living a few more months" was a worthy trade off for the chance to "live forever" in a motion picture. He passed away seven months after the movie's American premiere. The cast also included Kate Capshaw and legendary Japanese actor Ken Takakura.
Colt Python Snub Nose
Trivia
Though the majority of the scenes taking place in Japan were actually filmed in Japan, the final shootout at the winery took places in Napa, California for two reasons. (a) The production's work Visa had run out but more importantly (b) Japan's strict gun control forces many filmmakers to use 'flash paper' style non guns. Since Ridley Scott wanted real automatic weapons firing blanks, they had to film the gun battle in the U.S. What also tips off the viewer that this shootout was filmed in the states was the presence of so many well known Chinese American Stuntmen, like Al Leong of Die Hard and Big Trouble in Little China fame, who would not be in Japan (since there are many Japanese Stuntmen who would be available).
Shotguns
Stevens Model 67
In order to take out Sato, Conklin (Michael Douglas) is given a Stevens 67 shotgun by Sugai's men. The weapon features an extended magazine tube and sawed-off stock. Conklin uses it to kill two Yakuza in the house. He was apparently only given three shells for it, as the hammer falls on an empty chamber when he tries to fire a fourth, at which point Conklin discards it.

Remington 870 Folding Stock
In a continuity error, Conklin's shotgun mysteriously transforms into a Remington 870 Folding Stock. This was because the main unit couldn't film the final battle in Japan as the filmmaker's visas had run out, so the main unit shifted to California to film the final battle.

Miscellaneous
