During the armored car heist, McCauley and Shiherlis carry Colt Model 654 carbines, 14.5" barreled predecessors to the M4, with M16A1-style lightweight barrels and sights.

Those were not Model 653s; they had no forward assists and no fencing around the magazine release. I couldn't tell barrel lengths, but they looked to me like they might be civilian AR-15 SP1 carbines (converted to auto-fire, of course).

You're right, they were 654s, same gun without the forward assist. If you freeze frame you can see a clear shot of the side and it's quite clearly a 14.5" barrel so it's not an SP1.

:The magazine release definitely lacked fencing, which is characteristic only of the very earliest XM177s/GAU-5As and civilian SP1 variants. I'm guessing that means it's a 654 upper on a GAU-5A receiver (or possibly even an SP1 receiver with a drop-in autosear).

During the bank robbery Neil McCauley ([[Robert De Niro]]) and Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) carry short barreled [[M16 rifle series]] carbines, which are designated as the Colt M733. They are ultra-compact versions of the M16 rifle family with 11.5-inch barrels, being smaller and shorter than the M16A2 Rifle (20-inch) and M4 Carbine (14.5-inch). The lighter encumbrance comes at a trade off of reduced range and accuracy, which is appropriate since the Model 733 can be fired from inside the vehicle, the robbers burdened by loads of cash, and because the firefight takes place at close to medium distances. The M733s have full automatic and semi-auto fire modes, while retaining the penetration of the 5.56 mm round of its big brothers, which is particularly deadly as they are capable of wounding officers and bystanders even through objects normally considered safe cover. They handle similarly to submachine guns, being less accurate but much more powerful.

Not surprisingly, Shiherlis uses the M733s to great effect, killing Bosko ([[Ted Levine]]), a member of Hanna's detectives, in a brief exchange of fire. After the getaway ride is disabled, Shiherlis sprays the police barricade with dozens of rounds, shooting up the LAPD patrol cars and bringing down at several officers. McCauley also uses it to shoot a pursuing patrolman while carjacking a Ford Taurus Wagon to escape.

Another weapon used by the Haitian gang members is an [[FN FAL]] carbine, seen during the intersection shootout and freeway chase scenes by "Blondie Dreds" ([[Kiko Ellsworth]]). The FAL used is an American Variant made by DSArms in Lake Barrington, IL, called the SA58. Like the FN FAL, The SA58 comes in many shapes and sizes and can easily be modified with different stocks, sights, etc., but in this particular scene it is a "Tactical Carbine OSW", which is a select-fire, super-short carbine (12" barrel with carbine handguard) with a para-style side-folding stock and a L4A2 NATO Bren 30-round magazine. Like the Law Enforcement/Military-only version of the SA58 OSW, the one used in the movie is select-fire. Unlike the version offered by DS Arms, the one in the movie does not have an attached carry-handle, a vertical pistol-grip installed on a hardpoint (picatinny rails) on the handguard, nor does it use any brand of holo-sight/red-dot reticle (like the EOTECH for example); instead, it uses standard para-style "rear-eared" iron peep-sights.

During the rescue mission in Cuba and the final standoff of the film, Tapia can be seen brandishing a Steyr SPP, a variant of the [[Steyr TMP]] machine pistol with the foregrip removed. Another goof is that this weapon is supposed to be semi-auto only, but Tapia can be clearly seen letting loose full auto bursts from the weapon. In some countries, other than the U.S., it is easier to convert commercially available Semi-Auto weapons into full auto guns (with the proper paperwork). Since it is difficult to build full auto guns in the US after 1986, most full auto versions of domestic and international weapons are either police samples or military contracts. In the context of this movie, however, since the character is a drug dealer, one can assume he acquired an illegally converted pistol from the black market.

Another weapon used by the Haitian gang members is an [[FN FAL]] carbine, seen during the intersection shootout and freeway chase scenes by "Blondie Dreds" ([[Kiko Ellsworth]]). The FAL used is an American Variant made by DSArms in Lake Barrington, IL, called the SA58. Like the FN FAL, The SA58 comes in many shapes and sizes and can easily be modified with different stocks, sights, etc., but in this particular scene it is a "Tactical Carbine OSW", which is a select-fire, super-short carbine (12" barrel with carbine handguard) with a para-style side-folding stock and a L4A2 NATO Bren 30-round magazine. Like the Law Enforcement/Military-only version of the SA58 OSW, the one used in the movie is select-fire. Unlike the version offered by DS Arms, the one in the movie does not have an attached carry-handle, a vertical pistol-grip installed on a hardpoint (picatinny rails) on the handguard, nor does it use any brand of holo-sight/red-dot reticle (like the EOTECH for example); instead, it uses standard para-style "rear-eared" iron peep-sights.
